THEN we are raised from deep dis tress, and send deliverance from on high. HYMN 36. The Necessity of Renewing Grace. HOW helpless guilty nature lies, unconscious of its load! The heart unchanged can never rise to happiness and God. 2 The will perverse, the passions blind, in paths of ruin stray : Reason debased can never find the safe, the narrow way. 3 Can aught beneath a power divine the stubborn will subdue? COME, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; Join in a song with sweet accord, and thus surround the throne. 2 The sorrows of the mind be banish'd from this place; Religion never was design'd to make our pleasures less. 3 Let those refuse to sing that never knew our God, But favourites of the heavenly King may speak their joys abroad. 4 The God that rules on high, and thunders when he please, That rides upon the stormy sky, and manages the seas: 5 This awful God is ours, our Father and our love; To those bright worlds beyond the sky, 5 There joys unseen by mortal eyes, In ever-blooming prospects rise, 6 Lord, send a beam of light divine, 7 Then shall, on faith's sublimest wing, our ardent wishes rise To those bright scenes, where pleasures immortal in the skies.
