by Christ to be the word preached.- unto him Jesus; he believed, &c.— Mark iv. 14, &c. Luke viii. 11. Acts viii. 27-38.

Whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a testimony against them.-Mark vi. 11. Luke x. 16. Matt. x. 11—13.

Jesus, as his custom was, went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read; and there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaias; and when he had opened the book, he found the place where it is written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, &c. and he closed the book, and gave it again to the minister, and sat down, &c. And he began to say unto them, This day is the scripture fulfilled in your ears, &c. and all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth.-Luke iv. 16—22.

Jesus went throughout every city and village, preaching and shewing the glad tidings, &c.-Luke viii. 1.

Jesus said, &c. Ought not Christ to have suffered? &c. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures, the things concerning himself, &c. then opened he their understandings, that they might understand the scriptures.-Luke xxiv. 26, 27. 45.

I pray, &c. for them also which shall believe on me through their word. John xvii. 20.

When the apostles were commanded not to preach Christ, they said, Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you more than unto God, judge ye.-Acts iv. 18. 19. v. 28.

Go,stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life: and when, &c. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ.-Acts v. 20. 42.

The Eunuch reading the prophet Isaias, Philip ran thither to him, &c. and opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached

We are here all present before God to hear all things that are commanded thee of God: while Peter was preaching Christ, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard.-Acts x. 33, 34. ii. 37, &c.

Call for Simon, &c. who shall tell thee words, whereby thou and all thy house shall be saved.-Acts xi. 13,14.

When Paul and his company came to Antioch, he went into the synagogue, &c. and after the reading of the law and the prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, say on: then Paul stood up, and preached, &c.—Acts xiii. 13, &c.

Then spake the Lord to Paul, &c. Speak, and hold not thy peace; for I have much people in this city: and he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.-Acts xviii. 9-11.

Paul went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerningthekingdom of God; but when divers were hardened, and believed not, &c. he separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus; and this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus.-Acts xix. 8-10. 20.

Now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up.-Acts xx. 32.

I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister, &c. delivering thee from the Gentiles, to whom I now send thee, to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God.-Acts xxvi. 16-18.

And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him: preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching

those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ. Acts xxviii. 23. 30, 31. ix. 22. xviii. 23. xi. 20, 21.

I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also: for I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ; for it is the power of God unto salvation, &c.-Rom. i. 15, 16. 2 Thess. ii. 14.

How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach except they be sent? &c. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.--Rom. x. 14, 15. 17. Titus i. 3.

Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel, &c. for the preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness: but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God, &c. It pleased God by the foolishness of preaching, to save them that believe, &c. - 1 Cor. i. 17, 18. 21. 23. 24, XV. 1-4.

My preaching was not with enticing words of man's wisdom, &c. but that which the Holy Ghost teacheth. -1 Cor. ii. 4, 5. 13.

In Christ Jesus I have begotten you, through the gospel.-1 Cor. iv. 15.

Every man, praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.-1 Cor. xi. 4.

He that prophesieth, speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort, &c. he edifieth the church, &c.—1 Cor. xiv. 3, 4.

you, in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled unto God.-2 Cor. v.

18-20.

And he gave some apostles, &c. for the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, until, &c.Eph. iv. 11-14.

The apostles rejoiced that Christ was preached, although some did it not uprightly.-Phil. i. 15, 16. 18.

When this epistle is read amongst you, cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans.-Col.iv. 16.

Ye received the word of God which ye heard of us; ye received it not as the word of men, but (as it is in truth) the word of God, &c.-1 Thess. ii. 13. 16. Eph. i. 13. Col. i. 6.

Despise not prophesyings. 1 Thess. v. 20.

Give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.-1 Tim. iv. 13. I charge thee, &c. preach the word: be instant in season, and out of season: reprove, &c.-2 Tim. iv. 1—3. If the word spoken by angels was stedfast, &c. how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him?—Heb. ii. 2, 3.

For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard (or because they were not united by faith to) it.-Heb. iv. 2.

I beseech you, brethren, suffer the word of exhortation: for I have written, &c.-Heb. xiii. 22.

Of his own will begat he us with Who hath made us able ministers the word of truth, &c. wherefore, my of the New Testament, &c. if the beloved brethren, let every man be ministration of death, written and swift to hear, &c. receive with meekengraven in stones, was glorious, so, ness the ingrafted word, which is able &c. how shall not the ministration of to save your souls: but be ye doers the Spirit be rather glorious?-2 Cor. of the word, and not hearers only, iii. 6-10. deceiving your ownselves.-James i. 18, 19. 21-23.

The ministry of reconciliation: to wit, that God was in Christ, &c. we Being born again, not of corruptiare ambassadors for Christ, as though ble seed, but of incorruptible, by the God did beseech you by us: we pray word of God, &c. and this is the word

which by the gospel is preached unto I cometh, &c. he shall baptize you you.-1 Pet. i. 23. 25.

As new born babes desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.-1 Pet. ii. 2,

with the Holy Ghost, and with fire. Luke iii. 16. Acts xi. 15, 16. John i. 26. 31. 33. Acts i. 5.

Jesus himself baptized not, but his

If any man speak, let him speak as disciples.-John iv. 1. 2. the oracles of God.-1 Pet. iv. 11.

Repent, and be baptized, every one I will not be negligent to put you of you, in the name of Jesus Christ, always in remembrance of these things, for the remission of sins: for the prothough ye know them, and be esta- mise is unto you, and to your chilblished in the present truth; yea, I dren, and to all that are afar off: think it meet, as long as I am in this even as many as the Lord our God tabernacle, to stir you up, by putting shall call. Then they that gladly reyou in remembrance.-2 Pet. i. 12, ceived the word, were baptized.13. iii. 1, 2. Jude 5. Acts ii. 38, 39. 41. xxii. 16.

That which we have seen and heard, But when they believed, &c. they declare we unto you, that ye also may were baptized, both men and women, have fellowship with us: and truly, &c. Then Simon was baptized, &c. our fellowship is with the Father, The Eunuch said, See, here is water, and with his Son Jesus Christ. what doth hinder me to be baptized? 1 John i. 3.

Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein.-Rev. i. 3.

III. Baptism.

GOD said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant, &c. Every manchild among you shall be circumcised, &c. and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you, &c. Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, &c. and circumcised the flesh, &c. And Abraham was ninety and nine years old when he was circumcised, &c. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised.Gen. xvii. 9-13. 23-25.

Suffer little children, and forbid them not to come unto me, for of such is the kingdom of heaven: and he laid his hands on them.-Matt. xix. 13-15.

Goye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.-Matt. xxviii. 19.

John said, I indeed baptize you with water: but one mightier than

and Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest, &c. they went both into the water, and he baptized him.-Acts viii. 12, 13. 36-38.

Saul arose, and was baptized.Acts ix. 18. xxii. 16.

Can any man forbid water that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? and he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Acts x. 47, 48.

Lydia, &c. whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul: and when she was baptized, and her household, &c. Believe on the Lord Jesus, and thou shalt be saved, thou and thine house, &c. and he took them the same hour, &c. and was baptized, he, and all his, straightway. --Acts xvi. 14, 15. 30-34.

Some who were baptized with John's baptism, were baptized again. Acts xix. 3-5.

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death, buried, &c.-Rom. vi. 3, 4.

I baptized also the house of Stephanus besides, I know not whether I baptised any other.-1 Cor.i.16. The unbelieving husband is sanctified by the believing wife: and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the believing husband; else were your children unclean: but now are they holy.-1 Cor. vii. 14.

All our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud, and in the sea, &c. but with many of them God was not well pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness, &c.-1 Cor. x. 1-5. Leaving the principles, &c. of the doctrine of baptisms.-Heb. vi. 1, 2. The ark, wherein few, that is eight souls, were saved by water: the like figure whereunto, even baptism, doth also now save us: not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Pet. iii. 20, 21.

IV. Breaking of Bread, or the
Lord's Supper.

THE Passover: and all the directions about it.-Exod. xii.

The doubt, whether one unclean might eat the passover, resolved by God unto Moses.-Numb. ix. 6, &c. The people not prepared, yet did eat the passover: Hezekiah prayed for them.-2 Chron. xxx. 18, 19.

As they were eating, Jesus took bread and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat, this is my body: and he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; for this is my blood of the New Testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins; but I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth, &c. and when they had sung an hymn, &c. - Matt. xxvi. 26-30.

They all drank of the cup.-Mark xiv. 23.

He sat down, and the twelve apos

tles with him, &c. He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves, &c. And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood, which is shed for you.-Luke xxii. 14.16-20.

When Judas had received the sop at supper, he went immediately out. -John xiii. 26. 30.

And they continued stedfastly, &c. in breaking of bread.-Acts ii, 42.

Upon the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul preached unto them, &c. in the upper chamber where they were gathered together, &c. When he, therefore, was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, &c.— Acts xx. 7—11.

Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, &c. let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, &c. but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.--1 Cor. v. 7, 8.

The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? the bread which we brake, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? for we, being many, are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread, &c. ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers, &c.-1 Cor. x. 16, 17. 21, 22.

When ye come together, therefore, into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's Supper (or ye cannot eat); for in eating, every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken: what! have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not (or are poor)? for I have received of the Lord, that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus, the same night in which he was

when he giveth of his seed unto Moloch, and kill him not, then I will set my face against that man, and against his family.-Levit. xx. 4, 5.

The priests or people who were unclean, &c. by any uncleanness, were not to eat or touch the holy things, that they might not profane

did, before they were cleansed, they were to be cut off from the presence of God: no stranger was to eat of the holy thing.—Levit. xxii. 1—10. 14, 15.

betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat, this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in (or for a) remembrance of me. After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the New Testament in my blood; this do ye, as oft as ye drink the holy name of the Lord; if they it, in remembrance of me: for as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew (or shew ye) the Lord's death till he come: wherefore, whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord, &c. he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body, &c. When ye come together to eat, tarry one for another: and if any man hunger, let him eat at home.1 Cor, xi. 17. 20—27. 29. 33, 34.

Put out of the camp every leper, and every one that hath an issue, and whosoever is defiled with the dead: both male and female shall ye put out; without the camp shall yet put them, that they defile not their camps in the midst whereof I dwell: and the children of Israel did so, &c.— Numb. v. 1—4. Deut. xxiii. 14.

If a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it: if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.-Lev. v. 1.

If there were a leper in the camp of Israel, he was to be pronounced unclean, and his habitation without the camp, alone.-Levit. xiii. 44. 46.

When he was to be brought into the camp again, he was first to be pronounced clean by the priest, after he had viewed him, and offered sacrifices for him, and performed other things: so, for other uncleannesses, they were to be separated from the congregation, &c. and so brought in again. Levit. xiv. 1, &c. xv. Matt. viii. 4.

Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in anywise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him (or that thou bear not sin for him).-Levit. xix. 17.

If the people of the land do any ways hide their eyes from the man

dwelt in a several house, being a leper: for he was cut off from the house of the Lord.-2 Chron. xxvi. 19-21.

The people of Israel, and the priests, and the Levites, have not separated themselves from the people of the lands, &c. for they have taken of their daughters, for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy seed have mingled themselves with the people of those lands; yea, the hand of the princes and rulers hath been chief in this trespass, &c.-Ezra iz. 1, 2.

They read in the book of Moses, &c. that the Ammonite and Moabite should not come into the congregation of God for ever, &c. Now it came to pass when they had heard the law, that they separated from Israel all the mixed multitude.-Neh. xiii. 1.3.

He that spareth his rod, hateth his son: but he that loveth him, chasteneth him betimes.-Prov. xiii. 24.

Debate thy cause with thy neighbour himself, and discover not a secret
