The unclean spirit said, I know needed not that any man should testhee who thou art, the holy one of tify of man: for he knew what was God, &c. with authority commandeth in man.-John ii. 24, 25. Luke ix. 47. he even the unclean spirits, and they obey him, &c. He cast out many devils, and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him (or, to say that they knew him.)-Mark i. 23, 24. 27. 34. v. 7.

Christ said to the man sick of the palsy, Son, thy sins are forgiven thee, &c. Who can forgive sins but God only? &c. The Son of man hath power, &c. to forgive sins.-Mark ii. 5—7. 9, 10. Luke v. 20—24.

Jesus: he shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David, and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end, &c. The holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God.-Luke i. 31 -33. 35.

At twelve years old, He sat in the midst of the doctors in the temple, both hearing them, and asking them questions. And all who heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.-Luke ii. 42. 46, 47. John vii. 46.

Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.-Luke xxiv. 45.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, &c. All things were made by him, and without him was not any thing made which was made, &c. He is the true light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, &c. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us; and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth, &c. Is preferred before me, for he was before me.-John i. 3. 9, 10.14, 15. 27. 30. iii. 16. 1 John i. 1, 2. 1 Cor. x. 4. 9. Heb. iii. 3, 4.

Jesus, &c. knew all men, and

No man bath ascended up to heaven, but he who came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven, &c. He who cometh from above, is above all, &c. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.-John iii. 13. 31. 34, 35.

What things soever the Father doth, those also doth the Son likewise, &c. For as the Father raiseth up the dead and quickeneth them, even so the Son quickeneth whom he will, &c. He hath committed all judgment to the Son; that all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father, &c. As the Father hath life in himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself: and hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because, &c.-John v. 19. 21— 23. 26, 27.

Him hath God the Father sealed, &c. I came down from heaven, &c. If ye see the Son of man ascend up where he was before, &c. Jesus knew from the beginning who they were that believed not, and who should betray him, &c. We believe and are sure that thou art that Christ, the Son of the living God.-John vi. 27. 38. 62. 64. 69.

Jesus said, I am the light of the world, &c. Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.-John viii. 12. 58. ix. 5. 1 Cor. x. 4. 9.

Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God, &c. Ye call me Master, and Lord, and ye say well, for so I am.John xiii. 3. 13.

Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father; and Jesus said, &c. He who hath seen me hath seen the Father, &c. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me, &c. The prince of this world cometh, and hath nothing in me.-John xiv. 8, 9. 11. 30.

When the Spirit of truth is come, no sin, &c.-2 Cor. v. 21. Heb.

&c. he shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. All things which the Father hath, are mine, therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, &c. We are sure that thou camest forth from God, &c.-John xvi. 13-15.28.30. O Father, glorify thou me, &c. with the glory which I had with thee before the world was !—John xvii. 5. When Jesus said, I am he, those who came to take him, went backward and fell to the ground.-John xviii. 5, 6.

Thomas said unto Jesus, My Lord, and my God!-John xx. 28. xxi. 2. Jesus, &c. a man approved of God, &c. he hath made that same Jesus whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.-Acts ii. 22. 36. Mark xi. 3, 4. 6.

But ye denied the Holy One, and killed the Prince of life, &c.-Acts iii, 14, 15. vii. 52.

Against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, &c. -Acts iv. 27.30.

Jesus Christ, he is Lord of all, &c. God anointed Jesus, &c. with the Holy Ghost, and with power.-Acts x. 36. 38. 2 Cor. vi. 5.

Feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. -Acts xx. 28.

Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, &c. and declared to be the Son of God, with power; according to the Spirit of holiness, &c.-Rom. i. 3, 4.

Christ, who is over all, God blessed for ever, Amen.-Rom. ix. 5.

Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that he might be the Lord both of the dead and living.-Rom xiv. 9. There is one Lord Jesus, by whom are all things, and we by him.1 Cor. viii. 6.

When he shall have put down all rule, and all authority and power; for he must reign till he hath put all enemies under his feet.-1 Cor. xv. 24,25.

He hath made him, &c. who knew

He raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power, and might, and dominion, and every name which is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: and hath put all things under his feet, and given him to be head over all things to the church, &c. who filleth all in all.-Eph. i. 20-23.

The unsearchable riches of Christ, &c. God, who created all things by Jesus Christ, &c. of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. -Eph. iii. 8, 9. 15.

He descended first into the lower parts of the earth: he who descended, is the same also who ascended up far above all heavens.-Eph. iv. 9, 10.

Jesus, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God, &c. God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth: and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, &c.-Phil. ii. 5, 6. 9-11. John v. 17, 18. x. 33.

Jesus Christ, who shall, &c. according to the working, whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.-Phil. iii. 20, 21.

Who is the image of the invisible God, the first-born of every creature. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible; whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him and for him, and he is before all things, and by him all things consist; and he is the head, &c. that in (or amongst) all things he might have the pre-eminence: for it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell.-Col. i. 15-19. 2 Cor. iv. 4. Heb. iii. 3,4.6.

Christ, for in him dwelleth all the fulness of the godhead, bodily, &c. The head of all principality and power, &c. Having spoiled principalities, &c.-Col. ii. 8-10. 15.

God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, &c. received up, &c.-1 Tim. iii. 16. Jesus Christ, which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light, which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, &c. To whom be honour, &c.-1 Tim. vi. 14-16.

The doctrine of God our Saviour, &c.-Titus ii. 10. 13.

His Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. Who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power; when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: being made so much better than the angels, as he hath, &c. a more excellent name, &c. Unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son? &c. He saith, And let all the angels of God worship him, &c. Therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee, &c.-Heb. i. 2, &c. viii. 1. x. 12. xii. 2. Col. iii. 1.

We see Jesus &c. crowned with glory and honour, &c.-Heb. ii. 9. Having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God, &c. Such an High Priest became us; holy, &c. and made higher than the heavens.-Heb. vii. 3.26.

Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, and to-day, and for ever.-Heb.xiii. 8. Our glorious Lord Jesus Christ (or our Lord Jesus Christ of glory), &c. That worthy name, by which we are called.-James ii. 1-7.

The precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb, without blemish, and without spot.-1 Pet. i. 19. 1 John ii. 1.

A living stone, &c. chosen of God, and precious, &c. who did no sin.— 1 Pet. ii. 4. 22.

Jesus Christ, who is gone into heaven, and is on the right hand of God; angels, and authorities, and powers being made subject unto him. 1 Pet. iii. 21, 22.

The power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eye-witnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice unto him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.-2 Pet. i. 16, 17.1 Pet. i. 21.

Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ; to him be glory both now, and for ever.-2 Pet. iii. 18. Jude 25.

In him is no sin, &c. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us.-1 John iii. 5. 16. 1 Pet. iii. 18.

His Son, Jesus Christ: this is the true God, and eternal life.-1 John v. 20.

Jesus Christ, &c. the Prince of the kings of the earth, &c. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever, Amen. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord; which is, and which was, and which is to come; the Almighty, &c. I am the first, and the last: I am he who liveth, and was dead; and behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen ; and have the keys of hell and death. -Rev. i. 5, 6. 8. 11. 17, 18. ii. 8.

I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts.-Rev. ii. 23.

These things saith he that hath the seven spirits of God, &c. that is holy, &c. that hath the key of David; he that openeth, and no man shutteth, &c.-Rev. iii. 1. 7.

The lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, &c. Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open it, &c. Worthy is the Lamb which was slain, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength,and honour, and glory, and blessing, &c. Blessing, and honour, and glory and power be

unto him who sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever, &c. The elders fell down and worshipped him who liveth for ever.-Rev. v. 5. 9. 12-14. xv. 3, 4.

And the kings of the earth, and the great men, &c. said to the mountains, &c. Hide us from the face of him who sitteth upon the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for the great day of his wrath is come, and who shall be able to stand?-Rev. vi. 15-17.

The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever. Rev. xi. 15.

The Lamb shall overcome them; for he is the Lord of lords and King of kings. Rev. xvii. 14. xix. 16.

I am the root, &c. of David, and the bright and morning star.-Rev. xxii. 16.

FOURTHLY, In his Nature. He shall feed his flock, like a shepherd he shall gather the lambs with his arms, and carry them in his bosom; and shall gently lead those that are with young (or give suck).-Isa. xl. 11.

He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking (or daily burning) flax shall be not quench.-Isa. xlii. 2, 3. Matt. xii. 18-20.

I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair I hid not my face from shame and spitting.—Isa. 1. 6. Matt. xxvi. 67.

He was oppressed, &c. he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter: and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth, &c. He had done no violence: neither was any deceit in his mouth.-Isa. liii. 7. 9. Mal. ii. 6.

Thy king cometh unto thee; he is just, &c. lowly, and riding upon an ass.-Zech. ix. 9.

The Sun of righteousness shall arise, with healing in his wings.Mal. iv. 2.

Jesus sat at meat, &c. many Publicans and sinners came, &c. The Pharisees said, Why eateth your master with Publicans and sinners? &c. Jesus said unto them, They who are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy and not sacrifice; for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance, &c. When he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted (or were tired), and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd, &c. He healed their sick, &c. would not send them away fasting, &c.— Matt. ix. 10-13. 36. xiv. 14, 15. xv. 32. xx. 34. John iv. 31, &c.

Learn of me, for I am meek, and lowly in heart.-Matt. xi. 29.

When Peter was sinking, and cried out, Lord, save me, &c. immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, &c. Wherefore didst, &c.-Mat.xiv.30.31.

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou who killest the prophets, &c. How often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not?—Matt. xxiii. 37.

Christ excused his disciples when they slept, &c. He said, The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak, -Matt. xxvi. 41.

The Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. -Luke ix. 56.

The Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost, &c. When he came near the city, he wept over it, saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace, &c.-Luke xix. 10. 41, 42. Mark iii. 5.

Jesus said, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.Luke xxiii. 34.

And the Word was made flesh, &c. full of grace and truth.-John i. 14.

When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, &c. he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, &c. Jesus wept. Then said the Jews, Behold, how he loved him!-John xi. 33. 35, 36. Luke vii. 12- 14.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, &c. Peace I leave with you: my peace I give unto you, &c. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.-John xiv. 1. 27. Matt. xiv. 27.

I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now: howbeit, &c.-John xvi. 12, 13.

CHAP. VI.

How CHRIST wrought this Salvation for Sinners, and what he was made and is; what he undertook, and did in order to do it.

SECT. I. He is Mediator. THERE is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.-1 Tim. ii. 5.

By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament.-Heb. vii. 22.

He is the Mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.--Heb. viii. 6.

And for this cause he is the MediWhen Mary sought Jesus, weeping, ator of the new testament, that, &c. he appeared to her, to comfort her, Heb. ix. 15. &c. He shewed himself also to his. disciples, his hands and side; and the second time to Thomas, when he would not believe the report of the rest.-John xx. 11. 14-16. 19. 25. 27.

Christ gave charge three times to Peter, that if he loved him, he should feed his lambs, and his sheep.-John xxi. 15-17.

Ye denied the holy One, and the just.-Acts iii. 14.

And to Jesus, the Mediator of the new covenant (or testament).—Heb. xii. 24.

SECT. II.
He took upon him the Na-
ture of Man, a Body of Flesh, and
humbled himself.

GOD said to the serpent, &c. I will
put enmity between thee and the
woman, and between thy seed and
her seed; it shall bruise thy head,
and thou shalt bruise his heel.-Gen.
iii. 14, 15.

I obtained mercy, for this cause, that in me first Jesus Christ might Behold a virgin shall conceive and shew forth all long-suffering, for a bear a Son, and shall call his name pattern to them who should hereafter Immanuel.-Isa. vii. 14. ix. 6. believe on him.-1 Tim. i. 16.

In that he himself hath suffered, being tempted, he is able to succour them who are tempted.-Heb. ii. 18. iv. 15.

Who is holy, harmless, undefiled, &c.-Heb. vii. 26.

Christ, as of a lamb without blemish, and without spot.-1 Pet. i. 19. Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us, &c.--1 John iii. 16.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.-Rev. iii. 20.

And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots; and the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, &c.-Isa. xi. 1, 2. Acts xiii. 22, 23.

His visage was so marred, more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men.-Isa. lii. 14.

He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows, &c. We hid, as it were, our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. -Isa. liii. 2,
