We are not as many, who corrupt taught, whether by word, or our the word of God (or deal falsely with epistle.-2 Thess. ii. 15. the word).-2 Cor. ii. 17.

God who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus.-2 Cor. iv. 6. iii. 18. 2 Tim. i. 10.

There are some who would pervert the gospel, &c. But though we, or an angel from heaven preach any other gospel than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed as we said before, so say I now again; if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. The gospel, &c. I neither received it of man, &c. but by the revelation of Jesus.-Gal. i. 7—9. 11, 12.

The Scripture foreseeing that God would, &c. The Scripture hath concluded all under sin.—Gal. iii. 8. 22. James iv. 5.

Nevertheless, what saith the Scripture? Cast out the bond-woman. Gal. iv. 30.

Having your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace, and take, &c, the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.-Ephes. vi. 15. 17.

Those things which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.-Phil. iv. 9.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, in all wisdom, teaching, and, &c. Col. iii. 16 9.

Ye received the word of God, which ye heard of us; ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you who believe.1 Thess. ii. 13.

As ye have received of us how ye ought to walk, and to please God, so ye would abound, &c. Wherefore comfort (or exhort) one another with these words.-1 Thess. iv. 1. 18.

Hold the traditions ye have been

These things write I unto thee, &c. that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, &c.-1 Tim.iii. 14, 15.

If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus, &c.-1 Tim. iv. 6.

I charge thee before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that thou observe these things, without preferring one before another, &c.-1 Tim. v. 21. vi. 13, 14.

If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, the words of our Lord Jesus, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; he is proud (or a fool), knowing nothing, but doting about questions, and strifes of words, &c. -1 Tim. vi. 3, 4. 2 Tim.fii. 14—17.

Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, &c.2 Tim. i. 13.

Continue thou in the things which thou hast learned, and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned: and that from a child thou hast known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation, &c. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, &c. That the man of God may be perfect; thoroughly furnished unto all good works.-2 Tim. iii. 14. -17.

Preach the word, &c. for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, &c.-2 Tim. iv. 2—4.

God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, &c.-Heb. i. 1, 2.

Therefore ought we to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip: for, if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, &c. how shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to

be spoken by the Lord, was confirmed unto us by them who heard, God also bearing witness both with signs, &c.-Heb. ii. 1-4. xii. 25.

Wherefore, as the Holy Ghost saith, To-day if ye will hear his voice.-Heb.

iii. 7.

The word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword; piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, &c. -Heb. iv. 12.

Every one who useth milk, is unskilful in the word of righteousness. Heb. v. 13.

Begat he us with the word of truth, &c. Be swift to hear, &c. the engrafted word, able to save, &c.— James i. 18, 19.21. Eph. i. 13. v. 26. 2 Tim. ii. 15.

If ye fulfil the royal law, according to the Scripture, Thou shalt love, &c.-James ii. 8.

As new born babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.-1 Peter ii. 2.

I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth, &c. Moreover, I will endeavour that you may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance: for we have, &c. We have also a more sure word of prophecy, whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light which shineth in a dark place, &c. Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation, for the prophecy came not in old (or at any) time by the will of man; but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.-2 Peter i. 12, 13. 15, 16. 19–21.

minds by way of remembrance; that ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour. Paul also, according to the wisdom given unto him, hath written unto you, as also in all his epistles, &c. In which are some things hard to be understood, which they who are unlearned, and unstable, wrest, as they do also the other Scriptures, unto their own destruction.-2 Peter iit. 1, 2. 15, 16.

And these things write we unto you, that your joy may be full.-I John i. 4. v. 13.

He who doth not abide in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God, &c. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God-speed: for he who bids him God-speed, &c.-2 John 9. 11.

It was needful for me to write to you, and exhort you, that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. I will put you in remembrance, though ye once knew, &c. Remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ; That they told you there should, &c.-Jude 3. 5. 17, 18.

Christ sent and signified by his angel unto his servant John, the things which must shortly come to pass, &c. Blessed is he who readeth, and they who hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those things which are written therein, &c. Write the things which thou hast seen, &c.Rev. i. 1. 3. 19.

Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither diminish from it.-Deut. iv. 2. Matt. xv. 3—6.

Every word of God is pure, &c. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.-Prov. xxx. 5, 6.

This second epistle I write unto I testify, &c. if any man shall add you, in both which I stir up your pure unto these things, God shall add unto

him the plagues which are written none other like him; and who is greater, and more excellent than all other Beings: that He is a Spirit, eternal and unchangeable, and fills all places by his presence; that his happiness, knowledge, wisdom, and power are infinite; that he is perfectly good and gracious, righteous and just, true and faithful, pure and holy; and that, after all we do, or can know of him, he is incomprehensible.

Secret things belong to God, revealed things to us and our children, that we may do all the words of this law. Deut. xxix. 29.

Pray for us, that the word of the Lord may run, and be glorified.-2 Thess. iii. 1.

See that ye refuse not him who speaketh for if they escaped not, who refused him who spake on earth; much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him who speaketh from heaven.-Heb. xii. 25.

The parable of the good seed, sown in good and bad ground; and the success thereof.-Matt. xiii. 3, &c.

Men by their traditions make void the word of God, reject the command of God, making the word of God of none effect.-Mark vii. 7-9. 13. See preaching of the word, CHAP.

CHAP. II.

Of God; His Nature, Attributes, and Works.

THAT which may be known of God is manifest: for, the heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament sheweth his handy work: so that we are without excuse, if, by the things which are made, we do not clearly perceive and understand his eternal power and Godhead.

The Lord is also known by the judgment which he executeth.

But the scriptures having given us a plainer and fuller account of the divine Being, than the reason of man can discover of itself; the best and easiest way of coming to the right knowledge of God, is by his word. From whence we learn, that He is the Maker, Preserver, and Governor of all things that he is a Being every way perfect; the only God; who hath

And the Lord God formed man, &c.-Gen. ii. 7. xv. 7. xxviii. 13.

Then began man to call upon the name of the Lord.-Gen. iv. 26.

The Lord appeared unto Abraham, and said, I am the Almighty God, &c.-Gen. xvii. 1. xxviii. 3. Rev. xxi. 22.

The Name of the Lord, the everlasting God.-Gen. xxi. 33.

The Lord, the God of heaven, and the God of the earth.-Gen. xxiv. 3.7.

And God said unto Moses, I AM that I AM, &c. Thus shall you say, &c. I AM hath sent me unto you. The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob hath sent me, &c. This is my name for ever; and this is my memorial unto all generations. The Lord God of the Hebrews, &c.—Exod. iii. 6. 14, 15. ix. 1. 13.

I appeared unto Abraham, &c. by the name of God Almighty; but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known unto them.-Exod. vi. 2, 3. Isa. xii. 2. xxvi. 4.

And the Lord, &c. proclaimed the name of the Lord. The Lord God, merciful and gracious, &c. The Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.-Exod. xxxiv. 5, 6. 14. xxxiii. 19.

The Lord, the God of the spirits,

of all flesh.-Numb. xxvii. 16. xvi. 22.

That thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, The Lord thy God. -Deut. xxviii. 58.

The Lord God of gods, the Lord God of gods, &c.—Josh. xxii. 22.

To sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh, &c.-1 Sam. i. 3. 11. Jer. xlvi. 18.

The Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, &c.-1 Sam. xvii. 45. Isa. xxviii. 29.

The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, &c.-2 Sam.

Holy and Reverend is his name. -Ps. cix. 9.

They have provoked the Holy One of Israel.-Isa. i. 4. Ezek. xxxix. 7.

I am the Lord, That is my name; and my glory will I not give unto another.-Isa. xlii. 8. Jer. xvi. 21.

As for our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is his name, The Holy One of Israel.—Isa. xlvii. 4. liv. 5. Jer. xxxii. 18.

O the Hope of Israel, the Saviour thereof, &c.-Jer. xiv. 8.

I will sanctify my great name, &c. And the heathen shall know that I am the Lord.-Ezek. xxxvi. 23.

So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the holy One of Israel. Ezek. xxxix. 7.

Now the God of peace be with you all, &c.—Rom. xv. 33.

God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.-1 Cor. xiv. 33. Heb. xiii. 20.

God is light; and in him is no darkness.-1 John i. 5. Jam. i. 17. God is love.-1 John iv. 8. 16. And the Lord God of the holy prophets sent, &c.-Rev. xxii. 6.

SECT. II. He is a Spirit. GOD is a Spirit.-John iv. 24. SECT. III. His Excellency. Majesty, Greatness, Perfection, Glory, Sovereignty, and Absoluteness. His Providence.

He created the world, and all things in it.-Gen. i. ii. Ps. c. 3. civ. cxxxvi. 5, 6, &c. Prov. xxii. 2. Ps. cxxxix. 13, 14.

And the fear of you, &c. shall be upon every beast, &c. Into your hand are they delivered, &c. Every moving thing that liveth shall be meat for you, &c. I have given you all things. Neither shall there be any more a flood to destroy the earth.Gen. ix. 2, 3. 11.

When men endeavoured to prevent their being scattered, God scattered them by confounding their language.Gen. xi. 4, 5, &c.

And the Lord said to Abraham, &c. Lift up thine eyes, &c. For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. -Gen. xiii. 14-17. Exod. ix. 29. Ps. xxiv. 1. 1 Cor. x. 26. 28.

The priest of the most high God. The most high God, possessor of heaven and earth.-Gen. xiv. 18— 20. 22. Ps. ix. 2. Josh. iii. §1.

Who hath made man's mouth? or who hath made the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing? &c. Have not I the The Lord the God of hosts is his Lord?-Exod. iv. 11. name.-Amos iv. 13. v. 27.

The Lord hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob.-Amos viii. 7.

Now the God of patience and consolation grant, &c.—Rom. xv. 5. 33.

I am the Lord: and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rid you out of their bondage, and I will redeem you with a stretched-out arm, and

with great judgments, &c.--Exod. vi. 6, 7.

That thou mayest know, that there is none like unto the Lord our God. I will sever, &c. To the end thou mayest know that I am the Lord in the midst of the earth.-Exod. viii. 10. 22. ix. 14. 16. x. 2.

Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power, &c. hath dashed in pieces the enemy; and in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown, &c. With the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered, &c. Who is like unto thee, O Lord, amongst the gods? &c. Glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders, &c. The Lord shall reign for ever and ever.-Exod. xv. 6 8. 11. 15-18. Ps. cxlvi. 10. Rev. xix. 6.

I know that the Lord is greater than all gods: for in the thing they dealt proudly he was above them. Exod. xviii. 11.

And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord descended, &c. And the whole mount quaked greatly. Exod. xix. 18. xx. 18, 19. And the glory of the Lord abode upon mount Sinai, &c. And the sight of the glory of the Lord was like devouring fire on the top of the mount, &c.-Exod. xxiv. 16, 17. Ezek. iii. 23. viii. 4. ix. 3.

There will I meet with the children of Israel, and they shall be sanctified by my glory.-Exod. xxix. 43.

I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. Thou canst not see my face; for there shall no man see me, and live. And it shall come to pass while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift, &c.-Exod. xxxiii. 18. 20. 22.

I will do marvels, such as have not been done in all the earth, &c. And all the people, &c. shall see the work of the Lord, for it is a terrible thing that I will do with thee.-Exod. xxxiv. 10.

The glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle.-Exod. xl. 34, 35. Levit. ix. 23. Numb. xiv. 10. xvi. 42.

As truly as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the Lord; because all those men who have seen my glory, and my miracles, &c.-Numb. xiv. 21, 22.

Balaam said, &c. All that the Lord speaketh, that I must do.-Numb. xxiii. 26.

Let the Lord God of the spirits of all flesh set a man, &c.-Numb. xxvii. 16. xvi. 22.

O Lord God, thou hast begun to shew thy servant thy greatness and thy mighty hand: for what God is there in heaven, or in earth, that can do according to thy works, and according to thy might?-Deut. iii. 24.

The Lord thy God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. Did ever people hear the voice of God, speaking out of the midst of the fire, as thou hast heard and live? The Lord he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath, there is none else.-Deut. iv. 24. 33. 39. v. 24-26.

The Lord thy God is among you, a mighty God and terrible.-Deut. vii. 21. Nehem. i. 5. iv. 14.

The Lord thy God, he who goeth before thee, is a consuming fire, &c. Thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, &c.

Deut. ix. 3. 26. Isa. lx. 16.

Behold the heaven, and the heaven of heavens is the Lord's thy God; the earth also with all that therein is. For the Lord your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords; a great God, mighty and terrible; who regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward. - Deut. x. 14. 17. Josh. xxii. 22.

And know you, &c. The Lord your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, and his stretched-out arm, and his miracles, and his acts which he did, &c.-Deut. xi. 2, 3.

Thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, The Lord thy God.— Deut. xxviii. 58.

Ascribe ye greatness unto our God, the Rock; his work is perfect; all his ways are judgment, &c. When
