Holy Spirit you breathed upon us since your resurrection, and we have Him, and are ready for God's service." But He wanted the Spirit to come upon them more copiously, and then they could go and preach in Jerusalem, Samaria, Galilee, and to the uttermost parts of the earth. If these disciples had started out to preach before being endued with the Holy Ghost, their testimony would not have been received.

In Acts i. 8 we read, " But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you." The Holy Spirit coming upon you, and dwelling in you for service, are two different things; and if God's people would wait on Him until the power comes, until they have received a baptism of the Spirit, I believe our work would amount to a hundred-fold more than it does! Many a man is toiling and working hard and wearing out his life; but the Spirit of God does not rest in power on him, and the work does not prosper!

THE TRUTHS WHICH WE PREACH ARE SUPERNATURAL.

We must have supernatural power! Put a man in the Sabbath-school or the pulpit who does not believe in supernatural power, and his work will be almost a total failure. But we ought to expect supernatural power; we ought to look for it; and, when we have waited for the power to come, I believe it will come if we seek it above everything else. See how those men tarried in Jerusalem ; and when the power came, they were different men.

I should like to have been present on the Day of Pentecost, and to have stood next to the maid who heard Peter deny his Lord. As she looked at him I have no doubt she said, "Is not that the man who told me that he did not know Christ? Is not that the man who was a coward, and was ashamed to own Him? And now he stands up, and in sight of the open sepulchre he tells the people to their faces that they have been guilty of killing the Saviour. What has come over him? What makes him so courageous? What makes him so bold?"

Such boldness will not care for criticism or public opinion. Peter tells his message as God gives it; and because he has been endued with power from on high.

You can go through the lives of the early Christians, and you will find them preaching with boldness. John the Baptist was the champion to tell Herod that he lived in adultery, though it cost him his head; but he was "filled with the Spirit," and warned the king of the sin. That is what we want to-day-men who are bold as lions, and who will tell out the truth, and the whole truth.

Let me ask you, in conclusion, if we shall not seek earnestly-we who are professed Christians-the power of God? Winter is coming on; and it is a grand time to work for God in London. Perhaps there is not a better field in the world in which to labour for the Master. Let there be a mighty work of grace here, and it will go to the uttermost parts of the earth. Think of the thousands of Christians represented before me this morning! Suppose every one were full of the Spirit of God. Suppose the Holy Spirit should come upon these young men, and upon these aged men, and they should give a ringing testimony for Christ. You would see the mighty results. No! no man could tell what the results would be! They would be beyond our comprehension. It would take eternity to tell all, if we should receive the Spirit of God in power.

And do you believe that God is willing to give the Holy Spirit? Is there a Christian in this house who doubts it? Is there anything that God desires more than that we should receive the Spirit from on high? Then, dear friends, let us seek Him with all our hearts.

"LET THE WICKED FORSAKE HIS WAY."

"Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts and let him return unto the Lord, and He will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon."— ISAIAH lv. 7.

HERE are five things in this text to which I ask your attention:

LET THE WICKED FORSAKE HIS WAY: that is the first thing. LET THE UNRIGHTEOUS MAN FORSAKE HIS THOUGHTS: that is the second thing.

LET HIM RETURN UNTO THE LORD: that is the third thing.

The first three we are to do; the other two belong to God. And you will notice that God will do them on certain conditions. The conditions are that we will turn from our sins, and give up our thoughts and our wills.

There are three stumbling-stones in the way of a man coming to Christ :-sin; his own thoughts; and his own way, or his own will. Every man has to meet and overcome three obstacles; or, as some one else has put it, three stumbling-stones : human righteousness; human religion; and human wisdom.

There is a great deal of religion in the world to-day; but a man may be full of religion, and yet be a stranger to the grace of God. You will find that some of the worst men in the community are very religious. They have a religion of their own. If you talk to them about Christ and His religion they say they would not give up their religion for anything in the world; but press them upon the point of giving up their sins, and you will find they are not willing to part with them. A man's religion is not worth much, if he is not willing to hate and forsake his sins. We have heard the question often asked-"How is it that, although the gospel has been preached for 1,800 years, Mohammed has more disciples than Jesus Christ?" The answer is easy: Because men can follow Mohammed, and not give up their sins. The trouble is to part with their sins. If men could get into the kingdom of God without giving up anything, they would flock in by the thousand. The giving up of our thoughts and ways is the difficulty.
