And Rachel faid, 'Therefore he fhall lic with thee to-night for thy fons mandrakes. 16 And Jacob came out of the field in the evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and faid, Thou must come in unto me; for furely I have hired thee with my fons mandrakes. And he lay with her that night. 17 And God hearkened unto Leah, and the conceived, and bare Jacob the fifth fon. 18 And Leah faid, God hath given me my hire, because I have given my maiden to my hufband and the called his name Iffachar. 19 And Leah conceived again, and bare Jacob the fixth fon. 20 And Leah faid, God hath endowed me with a good dowry: how will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him fix fons: and the called his name Zebulun. 21 And afterwards the bare a daughter, and called her name Dinah. 22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to her, and opened her woib. 23 And the conceived, and bare a fon; and sald, God bath taken away my reproach? 24 And the called his name Jofeph; and said, The LORD thail add to me another son. 25 And it came to pals, when Rachel had born Jofeph, that Jacob faid unto Laban, Sand me away, that I may go unto mine ewn place, and to my country. 16 Give me my wives and my children, for whom I have ferved thee, and let me go: for thou knoweft my fervice which I have done thee. 29 And he faid unto him, Thou knoweft how I have ferved thee, and how thy cattle was with me. 30 For it was little which thou hadst before I came, and it is now increased unto a multitude; and the LORD hath bleifed thee fince my coming: and now, when thall I provide for mine own houfe allo? 31 And he faid, What thall I give thee? And Jacob faid, Thou shalt not give me any thing. If thou wilt do this thing for me, I will again feed and keep thy flock. 32 I will pass through all thy dock to-day, removing from thence all the speckled and spotted cattle, and all the brown cattle among the theep, and the fpotted and fpeckled among the goats; and of fuch fhall be my hire. 33 So fhall my righteousness answer for me in time to come, when it thall come for my hire before thy face: every one that is not fpeckled and spotted among the goats, and brown among the theep, that thall be counted ttolen with me. 34 And Laban faid, Behold, I would it might be according to thy word. 35. And he removed that day the he-goats that were ring-itraked and spotted, and all the the-goats that were fpeckled and fpotted, and every one that had fome white in it, and all the brown among the theep, and gave them into the hand of his fons. 36 And he fet three days journey betwixt himself and Jacob: and Jacob fed the rest of Labans flocks. 37 And Jacob took him rods of green poplar, and of the hazel and chesnut-tree, and pilled white firakes in them, and made the white appear which was in the rods. 38 And he fet the rods which he had pilled before the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs, when the flocks came to drink, that they thould conceive when they came to drink. 39 And the flocks conceived before the rods, and brought forth cattle ring-traked, fpeckled, and spotted. 40 And Jacob did feparate the lambs, and fet the faces of the flocks toward the ringftraked and all the brown in the flock of Laban: and he put his own flocks by themselves, and put them not unto Labans cattle. 41 And it came to pafs, whenfoever the fironger cattle did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the cattle in the gutters, that they might conceive among the rods. 42 But when the cattle were feeble he put them not in: fo the feebler were Labans, and the ftronger Jacobs. 43 And the man increased exceedingly, and had much cattle, and maid-fervants, and men-fervants, and camels, and afics. CHAP. XXXI. 1 Jacob departeth from Laban: 22 Laban pursueth him: 44 their covenant at Galeed. Nd he heard the words of Labans fons, on And Laban said unto hin, I pray thee, A faying, Jacob liath taken away all that if I have found favour in thine eyes, tarry: for I have learned by experience, that the Lord hath blefied me for thy fake. 28 And he faid, Appoint me thy wages, and I will give it. was our fathers; and of that which was our fathers hath he gotten all this glory. 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward liim as before. And I faid, Here am I. 12 And he faid, Lift up now thine eyes and fee, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ring-traked, fpeckled, and grifled: for I have feen all that Laban doeth unto thee. 13 I am the God of Beth-el, where thou anointedit the pillar, and where thou vowedft a vow unto me: now arife, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. 14 And Rachel and Leah anfwered and faid unto him, is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our fathers houfe? 15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath fold us, and bath quite devoured alfo our money. 16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our childrena: now then, whatfoever God hath faid unto thee, do. 17 Then Jacob rofe up, and set his fons and his wives upon camels: 18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padanaram, for to go to Ifaac his father in the land of Canaan. 19 And Laban went to thear his theep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her fathers, 20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled, 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rote up, and pailed over the river, and fet his face toward the mount Gilead. 22 And it was told Laban, on the third day, that Jacob was fled, 23 And he took his brethren with him, and purfued after him seven days journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. 24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and faid unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. 25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob bad pitched his tent in the mount, and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob, What haft thou done, that thou hatt ttolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters as captives taken with the fword? 27 Wherefore didft thou flee away fecretly, and fteal away from me, and didit not tell me, that I might have fent thee away with mirth and with fongs, with tabret and with harp; 28 And hatt not fuffered me to kifs my fons and my daughters? Thou haft now done foolishly in fo doing. 29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yetternight, faying, 'Take thou heed that thoufpeak not to Jacob either good or bad. 30 And now, though thou wouldeft needs be gone, becaufe thou fore longedit after thy fathers houfe; yet wherefore haft thou ftolen my gods? 31 And Jacob anfwered and faid to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I faid, Peradventure thou wouldeft take by force thy daughters from me. 32 With whomfoever thou findett thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren difcern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had ftolen them. 33 And Laban went into Jacobs tent, and into Leahs tent, and into the two maid-fervants tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leahs tent, and entered into Rachels tent. 34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camels furniture, and fat upon them. And Laban fearched all the tent, but found them not. 35 And the faid to her father, Let it no difpleafe my lord that I cannot rife up before thee; for the cuttom of women is upon me. And he fearched, but found not the images. 36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob anfwered and faid to Laban, What is my trefpafs, what is my fin, that thou haft fo hotly purfued after me? 37 Whereas thou haft fearched all my ftuff, what haft thou found of all thy houfehold-ttuff? fet it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both. 38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy the-goats have not caft their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. 39 That which was torn of beafts I brought not unto thee; I bare the fofs of it: of my hand didit thou require it, whether ftolen by day, or stolen by night. 40 Thus I was; in the day the drought confumed me, and the froft by night; and my fleep departed from mine eyes. 41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy houfe: I ferved thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and fix years for thy cattle; and thou hait changed my wages ten times. 42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Ifaac, bad been with me, furely thou hadst fent me away now empty: God hath feen mine affliction, alfo he cometh to meet thee, and four hun and the labour of my hands, and rebuked dred men with him. thee yefternight. 431 And Laban answered and faid unto Jacob, Thefe daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou feett is mine: and what can I do this day unto thefe my daughters, or unto their children which they have borne? 44 Now, therefore, come thou, let us make a covenant, 1 and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. 45 And Jacob took a stone, and fet it up for a pillar. 46 And Jacob faid unto his brethren, Gather stones: and they took itones, and made an heap; and they did eat there upon the heap. 47 And Laban called it Jegar-fahadutha; but Jacob called it Galced. 48 And Laban faid, This heap is a witnefs between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; 49 And Mizpah: for he faid, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are abfent one from another. 50 If thou thalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives befides my daughters, no man is with us; fee, God is witness betwixt me and thee; 51 And Laban faid to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have caft betwixt me and thee. 52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witnefs, that I will not pafs over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pafs over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father judge betwixt us. And Jacob fware by the fear of his father Ifaac. 54 Then Jacob offered facrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. 55 And carly in the morning Laban rofe up, and kiffed his sons and his daughters, and bieffed them and Laban departed, and returned unto his place. And he faid, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he faid unto him, What is thy name? And he faid, Jacob. 28 And he faid, Thy name thall be called no more Jacob, but Ifrael: for as a prince halt thou power with God and with men, and haft prevailed. 29 And Jacob afked him, and faid, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name, and he faid, Wherefore is it that thou doft afk after my name? And he bleffed him there. 30 And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have feen God face to face, and my life is preferved. 31 And as he paffed over Penuel the fun Tole upon him, and he halted upon his thigh. 32 Therefore the children of Ifrael eat not of the finew which fhrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day; becaufe he touched the hollow of Jacobs thigh in the finew that thrank. CHAP. XXXIII. 1 The kindness of Jacob and Ffau at their meeting, 18 Jacob buyeth a field, and buildeth an altar. A and, behold, Efau came, and with him Nd Jacob lifted up his eyes, and looked, four hundred men. And he divided the children unto Leah, and unto Rachel, and unto the two handmaids. 2 And he put the handmaids and their children foremost, and Leah and her children after, and Rachel and Jofeph hindermoft. 3 And he paffed over before them, and bowed himself to the ground feven times until he came near to his brother. 4 And Efau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kiffed him and they wept. 5 And he lifted up his eyes, and faw the women and the children, and faid, Who are thofe with thee? And he faid, The children which God hath gracioully given thy fervant. 6 Then the handmaidens came near, they and their children, and they bowed themfelves. 7 And Leah alfo with her children came near, and bowed themfelves: and after came Jofeph near, and Rachel, and they bowed themselves. 8 And he faid, What meanet thou, by all this drove which I met! And he faid, Thefe are to find grace in the fight of my lord. 9 And Efau faid, I have enough my bro ther: keep that thou haft unto thyfelf. 10 And Jacob faid, Nay, I pray thee: if now I have found grace in thy fight, then receive my prefent at my hand: for therefore I have feen thy face, as though I had feen the face of God, and thou watt pleafed with me. 11 Take, I pray thee, my blefling that is brought to thee; becaufe God hath dealt graciously with me, and becaufe I have enough. And he urged him, and he took it. 12 And he faid, Let us take our journey, and let us go, and I will go before thee. 13 And he faid unto him, My lord know cth that the children are tender, and the flocks and herds with young are with me; and if men thould overdrive them one day, all the flock will die. 14 Let my lord, I pray thee, pafs over before his fervant; and I will lead on foftly, accarding as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto my lord unto Seir. 15 And Esau faid, Let me now leave with thee fome of the folk that are with me. And he faid, What needeth it? let me find grace in the fight of my lord. 16 So Efau returned that day on his way unto Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built him an houfe, and made booths for his. cattle: therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. 18 And Jacob came to Shalem, a city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan-aram, and pitched his tent before the city. 19 And he bought a parcel of a field, where he had fpread his tent, at the hand of the children of Hamor, Shechems father, for an hundred pieces of money. 20 And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Ifrael. CHAP. XXXIV. 1 Dinah ravished. 20 The Shechemites are the bare unto Jacob, went out to fee the daughters of the land. 2 And when Sheehem the fon of Hamor the Hivite, prince of the country, faw her, he took her, and lay with her, and defiled fier. 3 And his foul clave unto Dinah, the daugh ter of Jacob; and he loved the damfel, and fpake kindly unto the damfel. 4 And Sehchem fpake unto his father Hamor, faying, Get me this damfel to wife. 5 And Jacob heard that he had defiled Dinah his daughter (now his fons were with his cattle in the field,) and Jacob held his peace until they were come. 6 And Hamor, the father of Shechem, went out unto Jacob to commune with him 7 And the fons of Jacob came out of the field when they heard it: and the men were grieved, and they were very wroth, becaufe he had wrought foily in Ifrael, in lying with Jacobs daughter; which thing ought not to. be done. ing, The foul of my son Shechem longeth give your daughters unto us, and take our 10 And ye shall dwell with us: and the land thall be before you; dwell and trade ye therein, and get you poffeflions therein. 11 And Shechem faid unto her father, and unto her brethren, Let me find grace in your eyes, and what ye thall fay unto me I will give. 12 Alk me never fo much dowry and gift, me: but give me the damfel to wife. and I will give according as ye thall fay unto chem and Hamor his father deceitfully, and 13 And the fons of Jacob anfwered She faid, (because he had defiled Dinah their fifter,) 14 And they faid unto them, We cannot do this thing, to give our fitter to one that is uncircumcifed: for that were a reproach unto us. 15 But in this will we confent unto you: If ye will be as we le, that every male of you be circumcised; 16 Then will we give our daughters unto you, and we will take your daughters to us, and we will dwell with you, and we will become one people, 17 But if ye will not hearken unto us, to be circumeifed; then will we take our daughter, and we will be gone. 18 And their words pleafed Hamor, and Shechem, Hamors fon. 19 And the young man deferred not to do the thing, because he had delight in Jacobs daughter; and he was more honourable than all the houfe of his father. 201 And Hamor and Shechem his fon came unto the gate of their city, and communed with the men of their city, faying, 21 These men are peaceable with us, therefore let them dwell in the land, and trade therein; for the land, behold, it is large enough for them: let us take their daughters to us for wives, and let us give them our daughters. 22 Only herein will the men confent unto us for to dwell with us, to be one people, if every male among us be circumcifed, as they are circumcifed. 23 Shall not their cattle, and their fubstance, and every beast of theirs, be ours? only let us confent unto them, and they will dwell with us. 24 And unto Hamor, and unto Shechem his fon, hearkened all that went out of the gite of his city: and every male was circumGed, all that went out of the gate of his city. 25 And it came to pafs on the third day, when they were fore, that two of the fons of Jacob, Suncon and Levi, Dinahs brethren, tank each man is word, and came upon the city holdly, and flew all the males. 20 And they flew Hamor and Shechem his ion with the edge of the fword, and took Diash out of Shechems house, and went out. 27 The sons of Jacob came upon the flain, and fpolled the city; because they had dehled their sitter. 28 They took their theep, and their oxen, and their affes, and that which was in the city, and that which was in the field, 29 And all their wealth, and all their little ones, and their wives. took they captive, and poiled even all that was in the houfe. 30 And Jacob faid to Suncon and Levi, Ye have troubled me, to make me to think among the inhabitants of the land, among the Canaanites, and the Perizzites: and I being few in number, they thall gather themfelves together againit me, and flay me; and I thall be destroyed, I and my houfe. 31 And they laid, should he deal with our sifter as with an harlot? CHAP. XXXV. 1 God fendeth Jacob to Beth-el: 2 he purgeth hish/afe of idols, 6 and buildeth an altar at Beth-el. 27 fancs death. A Bethel, and dwell there, and make Nd God (aid unto Jacob, Arife, go up to there an altar unto God, that appeared unto thee when thou fleddet from the face of Blau thy brother. a Then Jacob faid unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments: 3 And let us arife, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who anfwered me in the day of my diftrefs, and was with me in the way which I went. 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the ftrange gods which zuere in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. 5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not purfue after the fons of Jacob. 6 So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, (that is Beth-el,) he, and all the people that were with him. 7 And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el; because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother. 8 But Deborah, Rebekahs nurse, died, and fhe was buried beneath Beth-el under an oak: and the name of it was called Allon-bachuth. 9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padan-aram, and blessed him. 10 And God faid unto him, Thy name is Jacob: thy name thall not be called any more Jacob, but Ifrael fhall be thy name; and he called his name Ifrael, 11 And God faid unto him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful, and multiply: a nation, and a company of nations, fhall be of thee; and kings ihall come out of thy loins: 12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Ifaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy feed after thee will I give the land. 13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him. 14 And Jacob fet up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of flore; and he poured a drink-offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon. 15 And Jacob called the name of the place, where God fpake with him, Beth-el. 16 And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath: and Rachel travailed, and the had hard labour. 17 And it came to pafs, when the was in hard labour, that the mid-wife faid unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this fon alfo. 18 And it came to pass, as her foul was in departing, (for the died,) that the called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin. 19 And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Beth-lehem. 20 And Jacob fet a pillar upon her grave: that is the pillar of Rachels grave unto this day. 21 And Ifrael journeyed, and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar. 22 And it came to pass, when Ifrael dwelt in that land, that Reaben went and lay with BilNow the tons of Jacob were twelve. hah his fathers concubine: and Ifrael heard is. 23 The fons of Leal, Reuben, Jacobs firstborn, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Machar, and Zebulun. |
