43 And he made him to ride in the fecond thariot which he had; and they cried before him, Bow the knee: and he made him ruler over all the land of Egypt.

44 And Pharaoh faid unto Jofeph, I am Pharaoh, and without thee thall no man lift up his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.

45 And Pharaoh called Jofephs name Zaph nath-paaneah; and he gave him to wife Afenath, the daughter of Poti-pherah prieft of On and Jofeph went out over all the land of Egypt.

461 (And Jofeph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt.) And Jofeph went out from the presence of Pharaoh, and went throughout all the land of Egypt.

47 And in the feven plenteous years the earth brought forth by handfuls.

48 And he gathered up all the food of the seven years, which were in the land of Egypt, and laid up the food in the cities: the food of the field, which was round about every city, laid he up in the fame.

49 And Jofeph gathered corn as the fand of the fea, very much, until he left numDering: for it was without number.

50 And unto Jofeph were born two fons before the years of famine came; which Afenath, the daughter of Poti-pherah priest of On, bare unto him.

51 And Jofeph called the name of the frit-born Manaffch: for God, faid he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my fathers house.

52 And the name of the fecond called he Ephraim for God hath caufed me to be fruitful in the land of my affliction.

53 And the feven years of plenteouf nefs that was in the land of Egypt were ended.

54 And the feven years of dearth began to come, according as Jofeph had faid and the dearth was in all lands; but in all the land of Egypt there was bread.

55 And when all the land of Egypt was famished, the people cried to Pharaoh for bread and Pharaoh faid unto all the E

gyptians, Go unto Jofeph; what he faith to you, do.

56 And the famine was over all the face of the earth. And Jofeph opened all the ftorehoufes, and fold unto the Egyptians; and the famine waxed fore in the land of Egypt. 57 And all countrics came into Egypt to Jofeph for to buy corn; because that the famine was fo fore in all lands.

CHAP. XLII.

Jacob Jendeth his ten fons to buy corn in Egypt: 17 they are imprisoned by fafeph for spies.

N

Tow, when Jacob faw that there was corn in Egypt, Jacob faid unto his fons, Why do ye look one upon another?

1 And he faid, Behold, I have heard that there is corn in Egypt: get ye down thither, and buy for us from thence, that we may live, and not die.

3 And Jofephs ten brethren went down to buy corn in Egypt.

4 But Benjamin, Jofepha brother, Jacob ant not with his brethren: for he faid, Left peradventure mischief befal him,

7 And Jofeph faw his brethren, and he knew them, but made himself strange unto them, and fpake roughly unto them; and he faid unto them, Whence come ye? And they said, From the land of Canaan to buy food.

8 And Jofeph knew his brethren, but they knew not him.

9 And Jofeph remembered the dreams which he dreamed of them, and faid unto them, Ye are fpics; to fee the nakedness of the land ye are come.

10 And they laid unto him, Nay, my lord ; but to buy food are thy fervants come.

11 We are all one mans fons: we are true men, thy fervants are no fpies.

12 And he faid unto them, Nay, but to fee the nakedness of the land ye are come.

13 And they faid, Thy fervants are twelve brethren, the fons of one man in the land of Canaan; and, behold, the youngest is this day with our father, and one is not.

14 And Jofeph faid unto them, 'That is i that I fpake unto you, faying, Ye are spies.

15 Hereby ye thall be proved; By the life of Pharaoh ye thall not go forth hence cxcept your youngest brother come hither.

16 Send one of you, and let him fetch your brother, and ye thall be kept in prison, that your words may be proved, whether there be any truth in you or elfe, by the life of Pharaoh, furely ye are fpies.

17 And he put them all together into ward three days.

18 And Jofeph faid unto them the third day, This do, and live: for I fear God.

19 If ye be true men, let one of your bre thren be bound in the houfe of your prison; go ye, carry corn for the famine of your houfes:

20 But bring your youngest brother unto me; fo fhall your words be verified, and ye fhall not die. And they did fo.

21 And they faid one to another, We are verily guilty concerning our brother, in that we faw the anguifh of his foul, when he befought us, and we would not hear, therefore is this diftrefs come upon us.

22 And Reuben anfwered them, faying, Spake I not unto you, faying, Do not fin against the child? and ye would not hear; therefore, behold, alfo his blood is required.

23 And they knew not that Jofeph underftood them; for he spake unto them by an interpreter.

24 And he turned himself about from them and wept; and returned to them again, and communed with them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him before their eyes.

25 Then Jofeph commanded to fill their facks with corn, and to reftere every mans money into his fack, and to give them provifion for the way: and thus did he unto them.

26 And they laded their aller with the corn, and departed thenec,

27 And as one of them opened his fack, to give his afs provender in the inn, he efpied his moncy: for, behold, it was in his facks mouth.

28 And he faid unto his brethren, My money is rettored; and, lo, it is even in my fack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, faying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us?

29 And they came unto Jacob their father, unto the land of Canaan, and told him all that befel unto them, faying,

30 The man, who is the lord of the land, Spake roughly to us, and took us for fpies of the country.

31 And we faid unto him, We are true men; we are no fries.

32 We be twelve brethren, fons of our father: one is not, and the youngest is this day with our father in the land of Canaan.

33 And the man, the lord of the country, faid unto us, Hereby thall I know that ye are true men: leave one of your brethren here with me, and take food for the famine of your households, and be gone;

34 And bring your youngett brother unto me; then shall I know that ye are no fpies, but that ye are true men: fo will I deliver you your brother, and ye fhall traffick in the land.

35 And it came to pafs, as they emptied their facks, that, behold, every mans bundle of money was in his fack: and when both they and their father faw the bundles of money they were afraid.

36 And Jacob their father faid unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Jofeph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away. All these things are against

me.

37 And Reuben fpake unto his father, faying, Slay my two fons if I bring him not to thee: deliver him into my hand, and I will bring him to thee again.

38 And he faid, My fon fhall not go down with you; for his brother is dead, and he is left alone: if mischief befal him by the way in the which ye go, then thall ye bring down my grey hairs with forrow to the grave.

CHAP. XLIII.

1 Jacob is hardly perfuaded to fend Benjamin. 15 Jofeph entertaineth his brethren, 31 and maketh them a feast.

And the famine to fare, when they 2 And it came to pafs, when they had eaten up the corn which they had brought out of Egypt, their father faid unto them, Go again, buy us a little food.

3 And Judah fpake unto him, faying, The man did folemnly proteft unto us, faying, Ye shall not fee my face, except your brother be with you.

4 If thou wilt fend our brother with us, we will go down and buy thee food;

5 But if thou wilt not fend him, we will not go down: for the man faid unto us, Ye fhall not fee my face, except your brother be with you.

6 And Ifrael faid, Wherefore dealt ye fo ill with me, as to tell the man whether ye had yet a brother?

7 And they faid, The man alked us frait Jy of our ftate, and of our kindred, faying,

Is your father yet alive? have ye another brother? And we told him according to the tenor of thefe words. Could we certainly know that he would fay, Bring your brother down?

8 And Judah faid unto Ifrael his father, Send the lad with me, and we will arife and go; that we may live, and not die, both we, and thou, and alfo our little ones.

9 I will be furety for him; of my hand fhalt thou require him: if I bring him not unto thee, and fet him before thee, then let me bear the blame for ever.

10 For except we had lingered, furely now we had returned this fecond time.

11 And their father Ifrael faid unto them, If it must be fo now, do this; Take of the beft fruits in the land in your vellels, and carry down the man a prefent, a little balm, and a little honey, fpices and myrrh, nuts and almonds.

12 And take double money in your hand: and the money that was brought again in the mouth of your facks carry it again in your hand; peradventure it was an overlight.

13 Take alfo your brother, and arife, go again unto the man:

14 And God Almighty give you mercy before the man, that he may fend away your other brother, and Benjamin. If I be bereaved of my children, I am bereaved.

151 And the men took that prefent, and they took double money in their hand, and Benjamin; and rofe up, and went down to Egypt, and ftood before Jofeph.

16 And when Jofeph faw Benjamin with them, he faid to the ruler of his houfe, Bring thefe men home, and flay, and make ready: for thefe men fhall dine with me at noon.

17 And the man did as Jofeph bade: and the man brought the men into Jofephs houfe.

18 And the men were afraid, because they were brought into Jofephs houfe; and they faid, Because of the money that was returned in our facks at the first time are we brought in, that he may feek occafion against us, and fall upon us, and take us for bond men, and our affes.

19 And they came near to the fteward of Jofephs houfe, and they communed with him at the door of the houfe,

20 And faid, O fir! we came indeed down at the first time to buy food:

21 And it came to pafs, when we came to the inn, that we opened our facks, and, behold, every mans money was in the mouth of his fack, our money in full weight; and we have brought it again in our hand.

22 And other money have we brought down in our hands to buy food: we cannot tell who put our money in our facks.

23 And he faid, Peace be to you, fear not; your God, and the God of your father, hath given you treasure in your facks: I had your money. And he brought Simeon out unto them.

24 And the man brought the men into Jofephs houfe, and gave them water, and they wathed their feet; and he gave their aflos provender.

25 And they made ready the prefent againft Jofeph came at noon; for they heard that they thould eat bread there.

26 And when Jofeph came home, they brought him the prefent which was in their hand into the house, and bowed themselves to him to the earth.

27 And he afked them of their welfare, and faid, Is your father well? the old man of whom ye fpake, is he yet alive?

28 And they answered, Thy fervant our father is in good health, he is yet alive: and they bowed down their heads, and made obeifance.

29 And he lifted up his eyes, and faw his brother Benjamin, his mothers fon, and faid, I this your younger brother, of whom ye fpake unto me! And he faid, God be gracious unto thee, my fon.

30 And Jofeph made hatte; for his bowels did yearn upon his brother: and he fought where to weep; and lic entered into his chamber, and wept there.

31 And he wathed his face, and went out, and refrained himself, and faid, Set on bread. 32 And they fet on for him by himself, and for them by themfelves, and for the Egyptians which did eat with him by themselves! because the Egyptians might not eat bread with the Hebrews; for that is an abomination unto the Egyptians.

33 And they fat before him, the first-born according to his birth-right, and the youngest according to his youth: and the men mar velled one at another.

34 And he took and fent meffes unto them from before him : but Benjamins mels was five times fo much as any of theirs. And they drank, and were merry with him. CHAP. XLIV.

Jofephs policy to flay his brethren. Nd he commanded the steward of his hqufe, faying, Fill the mens facks with food, as much as they can carry, and put every mans money in his facks mouth.

2 And put my cup, the filver cup, in the facks mouth of the youngeft, and his cornmoney. And he did according to the word that Jofeph had spoken.

3 Affoon as the morning was light the men were fent away, they and their alles.

4 And when they were gone out of the city, and not yet far off, Jofeph faid unto his tteward, Up, follow after the men; and, when thou doft overtake them, fay unto them Wherefore have ye rewarded evil for good?

5 Is not this it in which my lord drinketh, and whereby indeed he divineth? Ye have done evil in fo doing.

6 And he overtook them, and he spake unto them thefe fame words.

7 And they faid unto him, Wherefore faith my lord thefe words? God forbid that thy fervants should do according to this thing.

Behold, the money which we found in our facks mouths we brought again unto thee out of the land of Canaan: how then fhould we fteal out of thy lords houfe tilver or gold? 9 With whomfoever of thy fervants it be found, both let him dic, and we alfo will be, my lords bond-men.

10 And he faid, Now alfo let it be according unto your words: he with whom it is found thall be my fervant; and ye thall be blameless.

11 Then they fpeedily took down every man his fack to the ground, and opened every man his fack.

12 And he fearched, and began at the eldest, and left at the youngest and the cup was found in Benjamins fack.

13 Then they reut their clothes, and laded every man his afs, and returned to the city. 14 ¶ And Judah and his brethren came to Jofephs houfe, (for he ruas yet there;) and they fell before him on the ground.

15 And Jofeph faid unto them, What deed is this that ye have done? wot ye not that fuch a man as I can certainly divine?

16 And Judah faid, What shall we fay unto my lord? what shall we fpeak? or how ball we clear ourselves? God hath found out the iniquity of thy fervants: behold, we are my lords fervants, both we, and he alfo with whom the cup is found.

17 And he faid, God forbid that I should de fo: but the man in whose hand the cup is found, he thall be my fervant; and as for you, get ye up in peace unto your father.

18 Then Judah came near unto him, and faid, Oh, my lord, let thy fervant, I pray thee, fpeak a word in my lords ears, and let not thine anger burn against thy fervant: for thou art even as Pharaoh.

19 My lord afked his fervants, faying, Have ye a father, or a brother?

zo And we faid unto my lord, We have a father, an old man, and a child of his old age, a little one: and his brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother, and his father loveth him.

21 And thou faidft unto thy fervants, Bring him down unto me, that I may fet mine eyes upon him.

22 And we faid unto my lord, The lad cannot leave his father: for if he should leave his father his father would die.

23 And thou faidit unto thy fervants, Except your youngest brother come down with you, ye fhall see my face no more.

24 And it came to pafs, when we came up unto thy fervant my father, we told him the words of my lord.

25 And our father faid, Go again, and buy us a little food,

26 And we faid, We cannot go down: if our youngest brother be with us, then will we go down; for we may not fee the mans face, except our youngest brother be with us.

27 And thy fervant my father faid unto us, Ye know that my wife bare me two fons:

28 And the one went out from me, and I faid, Surely he is torn in pieces; and I faw him not fince:

29 And if ye take this alfo from me, and mifchief befal him, ye thall bring down my grey hairs with forrow to the grave.

30 Now, therefore, when I come to thy fervant my father, and the lad be not with us: (feeing that his life is bound up in the lads life;}

31 It thall come to pass, when he feeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die: and thy fervant that bring down the grey hairs of thy fervant our father with forrow to the grave.

3 And Jofeph faid unto his brethren, I am Jofeph: doth my father yet live? And his brethrem could not answer him: for they were troubled at his prefence.

4 And Jofeph faid unto his brethren, Come near to me, I pray you and they came near. And he faid, I am Jofeph your brother, whom ye fold into Egypt.

5 Now, therefore, be not grieved, nor an gry with yourselves, that ye fold me hither: for God did fend me before you to preferve

6 For thefe two years hath the famine been in the land; and yet there are five years, in the which there Jhall neither be earing nor harvest.

7 And God fent me before you to preferve you a pofterity in the earth, and to fave your lives by a great deliverance.
