12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

13 But the men of Sodom were wicked, and finners before the LORD exceedingly.

14 And the LORD faid unto Abram, after that Lot was feparated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art, northward, and fouthward, and eattward, and westward:

15 For all the land which thou feeft, to thee will I give it, and to thy feed for ever. 16 And I will make thy feed as the duft of the earth: fo that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then fhall thy feed alfo be numbered.

17 Arife, walk through the land, in the length of it, and in the breadth of it: for I will give it unto thee.

18 Then Abram removed bis tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

12 And they took Lot, Abram's brothers fon, (who dwelt in Sodom,) and his goods, and departed.

13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Ethcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.

14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained fervants, born in his own houfe, three hundred and eighteen, and purfued them unto Dan.

15 And he divided himfelf against them. he and his fervants by night, and fmote them, and purfued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damafcus.

22 And Abram faid to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the mott high God, the poffeffor of heaven and earth,

Fter these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vifion, faying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy fhield, and thy exceeding great reward.

2 And Abram laid, LonD God, what wilt thou give me, feeing I go childless, and the fleward of my houfe is this Eliezer of Damafcus?

3 And Abram faid, Behold, to me thou haft given no feed: and, lo, one born in my houfe is mine heir.

49 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, faying, This fhall not be thine heir; but he that thall come forth out of thine own bowels fhall be thine heir.

5 And he brought him forth abroad, and faid, Look now toward heaven, and tell the ftars, if thou be able to number them. And he faid unto him, So fhall thy feed be.

6 And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for rightcoufnels. 7 And he faid unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

8 And he faid, LORD God, whereby fhall I know that I thall inherit it?

9 And he faid unto him, 'Take me an heifer of three years old, and a fhe-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.

Io And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midft, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he

not.

11 And when the fowls came down upon the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

12 And when the fun was going down, a deep fleep fell upon Abram; and, fo, an horror of great darknefs fell upon him.

13 And he faid unto Abram, Know of a furety, that thy feed thall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and thall ferve them; and they fhall aflict them four hundred years:

14 And alfo that nation, whom they fhall ferve, will I judge: and afterward thall they come out with great fubitance.

15 And thou fhalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old

age.

16 But in the fourth generation they fhall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

17 And it came to pafs, that when the fun went down, and it was dark, behold a fmoking furnace, and a burning lamp, that paffed between those pieces.

18 In that fame day the LORD made a Covenant with Abram, faying, Unto thy feed have I given this land, from the ríver of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

6 But Abram faid unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleafeth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

7 And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

8 And he faid, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camelt thou? and whither wilt thou go? And the faid, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

9 And the angel of the LORD faid unto her, Return to thy mittrefs, and fubmit thylelf under her hands.

10 And the angel of the LORD faid unto her, I will multiply thy feed exceedingly, that it fhall not be numbered for multitude.

11 And the angel of the LORD faid unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and thalt bear a fon, and thalt call his name fihmael; becaufe the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

12 And he will be a wild man, his hand will be against every man, and every mans hand against him: and he thall dwell in the prefence of all his brethren.

13 And the called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God feeft me: for the fald, Have I also here looked after

14 Wherefore the well was called Beerlahai-roi: behold, it is between Kadeth and Bered.

5 Neither fhall thy name any more be called Abram; but thy name thall be Abraham: for a father of many nations have I made thee.

6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee; and kings thall come out of thee.

7 And I will eftablish my covenant be tween ine and thee, and thy feed after thee, in their generations, for an everlasting cr venant; to be a God unto thee, and to tý feed after thee.

11 And ye thall circumcife the flesh of your foreskin; and it fhall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

12 And he that is eight days old fhall be circumcifed among you, every man-child in your generations; he that is born in the houfe, or bought with money of any itranger, which is not of thy feed.

13 He that is born in thy houfe, and he that is bought with thy money, muft needs be circumcifed: and my covenant fhall be in your fleth for an everlaiting covenant.

14 And the uncircumcifed man-child,whofe fleth of his forcikin is not circumcifed, that foul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

15 And God faid unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah fhall her name be:

16 And I will blefs her, and give thee a fon alfo of her: yea, I will blefs her, and the fhall be a mother of nations; kings of people thall be of her.

17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and faid in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old and fhall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

18 And Abraham faid unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

19 And God faid, Sarah thy wife thall bear thee a fon indeed; and thou fhalt call his name Ifaac: and I will eftablish my covenant with him for an everlafting covenant, and with his feed after him.

10 And as for Ifhmael, I have heard thee; Behold, I have bleffed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly: twelve princes fhall he beget; and I will make him a great nation.

21 But my covenant will I eftablish with Ifaac, which Sarah fhall bear unto thee, at this fet time in the next year.

CHAP. XVIII.

1 Abraham entertaineth three angels. 9 Sarahs laughter. 17 Sodoms deftruction revealed to Abraham: 23 his interceffion.

And the LORD appeared unto him in the plains of Mamre and he fat in the tent-door in the heat of the day.

2 And he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood by him: and, when he faw them, he ran to meet them from the tent-door, and bowed himself toward the ground,

3 And faid, My Lord, if now I have found favour in thy fight, país not away, I pray thee, from thy fervant.

4 Let a little water, I pray you, be fetched, and wash your feet, and reft yourselves under

the tree;

5 And I will fetch a morfel of bread, and comfort ye your hearts; after that ye thall pafs on: for therefore are ye come to your fervant. And they faid, So do as thou hast faid.

6 And Abraham haftened into the tent unto Sarah, and faid, Make ready quickly three meafures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes upon the hearth."

7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto a young man; and he hafted to drefs it.

8 And he took butter and milk, and the calf which he had dreffed, and fet it before them; and he flood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

9 And they faid unto him, Where is Sarah thy wife? And he faid, Behold, in the tent.

10 And he faid, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife thall have a fon. And Sarah heard it in the tent-door, which was behind him.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, and well ftricken in age; and it ceafed to be with Sarah after the manner of women.

12 Therefore Sarah laughed within herfelf, faying, After I am waxed old fhall I have pleafure, my lord being old alfo!

13 And the LORD faid unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, faying, Shall i of a furety bear a child, which am old?

14 Is any thing too hard for the LORD At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah fhall have a fon.

15 Then Sarah denied, faying, I laughed not; for fhe was afraid. And he faid, Nay; but thou didtt laugh.

16 And the men rofe up from thence, and looked toward Sodom: and Abraham went with them, to bring them on the way. 17 And the LORD faid, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do;

18 Seeing that Abraham thall furely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth fhall be bleffed in him?

19 For 1 know him, that he will command his children and his houfehold after him, and they fhall keep the way of the LORD, to do juftice and judgment; that the LORD inay bring upon Abraham that which he hath Spoken of him.

20 And the LORD said, Because the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their fin is very grievous;

21 I will go down now, and fee whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know.

22 And the men turned their faces from thence, and went toward Sodom: but Abraham flood yet before the LORD,

234 And Abraham drew near, and faid, Wilt thou alfo destroy the righteous with the wicked!

24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou alfo deftroy and not fpare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to lay the righteous with the wicked; and that the righteous fhould be as the wicked, that be far from thee. Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?

26 And the LORD faid, If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then i will fpare all the place for their sakės.

27 And Abraham answered and faid, Behold now, I have taken upon me to fpeak unto the LORD, which am but duit and ashes: 18 Peradventure there hall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou deftroy all the city for lack of five? And he faid, If I find there forty and five, I will not deftroy it.

29 And he spake unto him yet again, and faid, Peradventure there fhall be forty found there. And he faid, I will not do it for fortys fake.

30 And he faid unto him, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will fpeak: Peradventure there thall thirty be found there. And he said, I will not do it if I find thirty there.

31 And he faid, Behold now, I have taken upon me to fpeak unto the LORD: Peradventure there fhall be twenty found there, And he faid, I will not destroy it for twentys fake.

32 And he faid, Oh let not the LORD be angry, and I will fpeak yet but this once: Peradventure ten fhall be found there. And he faid, I will not deftroy it for tens fake.

33 And the LORD went his way, as foon as he had left communing with Abraham and Abraham returned unto his place.

Lot entertaineth truo angels. 24 Solom and Gomorrah defroyed. 26 Lot's wife punished. 31 His inceft.

A

ND there came two angels to Sodom at even; and Lot fat in the gate of Sodom: and Lot feeing them, rofe up to meet them; and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground;

2 And he faid, Behold now, my lords, turn in, I pray you, into your fervants houfe, and tarry all night, and wath your feet, and ye shall rife up early, and go on your ways. And they faid, Nay; but we will abide in the ftreet all night.

3 And he preffed upon them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his houfe: and he made them a feaft, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did cat.

4 But, before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the houfe round, both old and young, all the people from every quarter.

5 And they called unto Lot, and faid unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.

6 And Lot went out at the door unto them, and fhut the door after him,

7 And faid, I pray you, brethren, do not fo wickedly.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes: only unto these men do nothing; for therefore came they under the shadow of my roof. And they

9 And they faid, Stand back. faid again, This one fellery came in to sojourn, and he will needs be a judge: now will we deal worfe with thee than with them. And they preffed fore upon the man, even Lot, and came near to break the door.

10 But the men put forth their hand, and pulled Lot into the house to them, and shut to the door.

11 And they fimote the men that were at the door of the house with bindness, both fmall and great: fo that they wearied themfelves to find the door.

12 And the men faid unto Lot, Haft thou here any befides?.fon-in-law, and thy fons, and thy daughters, and whatfoever thou haft in the city, bring them out of this place:

13 For we will destroy this place, becaufe the cry of them is waxen great before the face of the LORD; and the LORD hath fent us to destroy it,

14 And Lot went out, and fpake unto his fons-in-law, which married his daughters, and faid, Up, get ye out of this place; for the LORD will defroy this city. But he feemed as one that mocked unto his fons in-law.

15 And when the morning arole, then the angels hattened Lot, faying, Arife, take thy wife, and thy two daughters which are here; left thou be confumed in the iniquity of the city.

16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the .ORD being merciful unto him and they brought him forth, and fet him without the city.

17 And it came to pafs, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he faid, Efcape for thy life, look not behind thee, neither ftay thou in all the plain: escape to the mountain, left thou be confumed.

18 And Lot faid unto them, Oh! not fo, my lord.

ig Behold now, thy fervant hath found grace in thy fight, and thou haft magnified thy mercy, which thou haft thewed unto me in faving my life; and I cannot cfcape to the mountain, left fome evil take me," and

I die.

20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one: Oh! let me efcape thither, (is it not a little one?) and my foul thall live.

21 And he faid unto him, See, I have accepted thec concerning this thing alfo, that will not overthrow this city for the which thou haft fpoken.

22 Hafle thee, etcape thither; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither: therefore the name of the city was called Zoar. 23 The fun was rifen upon the earth when Lot entered into Zoar.

24 Then the LORD rained upon Sodom, and upon Gomorrah, brimitone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;

25 And he overthrew thofe cities, and all the plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground. 26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and the became a pillar of falt. 27 And Abraham gat up early in the morning to the place where he flood before

the LORD.

28 And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain, and beheld, and, lo, the imoke of the country went up as the fmoke of a furnace.

29 And it came to pafs, when God deftroyed the cities of the plain, that God remeinbered Abraham, and fent Lotout of the midft of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in the which Lot dwelt.

30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar: and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the firft-born faid unto the younger, Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth.

32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may prelerve feed of our father.

33 And they made their father drink wine that night and the firit-born went in, and Jay with her father; and he perceived not when the lay down, nor when the arofe.

34 And it came to pafs on the morrow, that the firft-born faid unto the younger, Behold, I lay yefternight with my father: let us make him drink wine this night alfo; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preferve feed of our father.

35 And they made their father drink wine that night alfo: and the younger arofe, and lay with him; and he perceived not when the walay down, nor when the arose.

36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.

$7 And the firft-born bare a fon, and called his name Moab: the fame is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

Gerar.

2 And Abraham faid of Sarah his wife, She is my lifter: and Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.

3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and said to him, Behold, thou art but a dead inan, for the woman which thou hatt taken; for the is a mans wife.

4 But Abimelech had not come near her: and he faid, LORD, wilt thou flay alfo a righ

teous nation?

5 Said he not unto me, She is my fifter? and the, even the herfelf faid, He is my brother: in the integrity of my heart, and innocency of my hands, have I done this.

6 And God faid unto him in a dream, Yea, I know that thou didst this in the integrity of thy heart; for I alfo with-held thee from finning againit me: therefore fuffered 1 thee not to touch her.

7 Now, therefore, rettore the man his wife; for he is a prophet, and he thall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt furely die, thou, and all that are thine.

8 Therefore Abimelech rofe early in the morning, and called all his fervants, and told all these things in their ears: and the men were fore afraid.

9Then Abimelech called Abraham, and faid unto him, What haft thou done unto us? and what have I offended thee, that thou haft brought on me, and on my kingdom, a great fin? thou hate done deeds unto me that ought not to be done.

10 And Abimelech faid unto Abraham, What faweft thou, that thou haft done this thing?

11 And Abraham faid, Becaufe I thought, Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will lay me for my wifes fake.

12 And yet indeed he is my fifter; the is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother: and the became my wife.

13 And it came to pafs, when God caufed me to wander from my fathers houfe, that I said unto her, This is thy kindnefs which thou shalt fhew unto me; At every place whither we fhall come, fay of me, He is my brother.

14 And Abimelech took sheep, and oxen, and unen-servants, and women-fervants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

15 And Abimelech faid, Behold, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

16 And unto Sarah he faid, Behold, I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of filver; bebold, he is to thee a covering of the eyes unto all that are with thee, and with all other: thus the was reproved.

17 So Abraham prayed unto God; and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-fervants; and they bare children.

18 For the LORD had fait clofed up all the wombs of the houfe of Abimelech, because of Sarab, Abrah..m's wife.
