23 And it came to pafs, that he went through the corn-helds on the fabbath-day; and his difciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.

24 And the Pharifees faid unto him, Behold, why do they on the fabbath-day that which is not lawful?

25. And he faid unto them, Have ye never read what David did, when he had need, and was an hungred, he, and they that were with him,

26 How he went into the houfe of God, in the days of Abiathar the high prieft, and did eat the fhew-bread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave alfo to them which were with him?

27 And he faid unto them, The fabbath was made for man, and not man for the fabbath:

28 Therefore the Son of man is Lord alfo of the fabbath.

a withered hand.

2 And they watched him, whether he would heal him on the fabbath day; that they might accufe him.

3. And he faith unto the man which had the withered hand, Stand forth.

4 And he faith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the fabbath-days, or to do evil? so fave life, or to kill? But they held their peace.

5 And when he had looked round about on them with anger, being grieved for the hardness of their hearts, he faith unto the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he ftretched it out: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

6 And the Pharifees went forth, and firaightway took counfel with the Herodians against him, how they might deftroy him.

7 But Jefus withdrew himfelf with his difciples to the fea; and a great multitude from Galilee followed him, and from Judea,

8 And from Jerufalem, and from Idumea, and from beyond Jordan; and they about Tyre and Sidon, a great multitude, when they had heard what great things he did, came unto him.

9 And he spake to his difciples, that a fmall fhip thould wait on him, because of the multitude, let they should throng him.

10 For he had healed many, infomuch that they preffed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.

11 And unclean fpirits, when they faw him, fell down before him, and cried, faying, Thou art the Son of God.

12 And he ftraitly charged them that they fhould not make him known.

13 And he goeth up into a mountain, and calleth unto him whom he would: and they came unto him.

14 And he ordained welve, that they fhould be with him, and that he might fend them forth to preach,

15 And to have power to heal fickneder, and to caft out devils.

16 And Simon he furnamed Peter;

17 And James, the fun of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, (and he furnamed them Boanerges, which is, The fons of thunder ;)

18 And Andrew, and Philip, and Bartho lomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the fon of Alphens, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanite,

19 And Judas lfcariot, which also betrayed him: and they went into an houfe.

20. And the multitude cometh together again, fo that they could not fo much as eat bread.

21 And when his friends heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they faid, He is befide himself.

22 And the fcribes which came down from Jerufalem faid, He hath Beelzelnib, and by the prince of the devils cafteth he out devils.

23 And he called them unto him, and faid unto them in parables, How can Satan cast out Satan?

24 And if a kingdom be divided against itfelf, that kingdom cannot frand.

25 And if a houfe be divided against itself, that houfe cannot stand.

26 And if Satan rife up against himself, and be divided, he cannot stand, but hath an end,

27 No man can enter into a fiong mans houfe, and fpoil his goods, except he will firtt bind the trong man; and then he will fpoil his house.

28 Verily I fay unto you, All fins fhall be forgiven unto the fons of men, and blafphemies wherewith toever they thall blafpheme.

29 But he that fhall blafpheme against the Holy Ghoft hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation:

30 Becaufe they faid, He hath an unclean fpirit.

31 There came then his brethren and his mother, and, ftanding without, fent unto him, calling him.

32 And the multitude fat about him; and they faid unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren without feek for thee.

33 And he anfwered them, faying, Who is my mother, or my brethren?

34 And he looked round about on them which fat about him, and faid, Behold my mother and my brethren!.

35 For whofoever thail do the will of God, the fame is my brother, and my sifter, and mother.

CHAF. IV.

1 The parable of the former: 14 the meaning thereof. 26 Of the feed grozving fecretly, 30 and of the mustard-feed.

A he began again to teach by the feafide: and there was gathered unto him a great multitude, fo that he entered into a thip, and fat in the sea; and the whole innltitude was by the fea on the land.

2 And he taught them many things by parables, and faid unto them in his doctrine, 3 Hearken; Behold, there went out a fower to fow:

4 And It came to país, as he fowed, fome fell by the way-fide, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.

ed no fruit.

8 And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that fprang up, and increafed, and brought forth, fome thirty, and fome fixty, and fome an hundred.

9 And he faid unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

10 And when he was alone, they that were about him, with the twelve, afked of him the parable.

11 And he faid unto them, Unto you it is given to know the myftery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are with out, all thefe things are done in parables:

12 That feeing they may fee, and not perceive; and hearing they may hear, and. not understand; left at any time they should be converted, and their fins fhould be forgiven them.

13 And he faid unto them, Know ye not this parable and how then will ye know all parables?

14 The fower soweth the word.

15 And thefe are they by the way-fide, where the word is fown; but, when they have heard, Satan conieth immediately, and taketh away the word that was fown in their hearts.

16 And these are they likewife which are sown on tony ground; who, when they have heard the word, immediately receive It with gladnefs;

17 And have no root in themfelves, and fo endure but for a time afterward, when affliction or perfecution arifeth for the words fake, immediately they are offended.

18 And these are they which are fown among thorns; fuch as hear the word,

19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the luns of other things, entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

20 And there are they which are fown on good ground, fnch as hear the word, and receive it, and bring forth fruit, foue thirtyfold, fome fixty, and fome an hundred.

21 And he faid unto them, Is a candle brought to be put under a buihel, or under a bed, and not to be fet on a candlestick?

22 For there is nothing hid, which fhall not be manifeited; neither was any thing kept fecret, but that it thould come abroad. 23 If any man have ears to hear, let him

hear.

24 And he faith unto them, Take heed what ye hear. With what meafure ye mete, it fhall be measured to you: and unto you that hear iball more be given.

25 For he that hath, to him fhall be gi ven; and he that hath not, from him thall be taken even that which he hath.

26 And he faid, So is the kingdom of God, as if a man thould cast feed into the ground.

27 And fhould fleep and rife night and day, and the feed fhould fpring and grow up, he knoweth not how.

28 For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herfelf; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.

29 But when the fruit is brought forth, immediately he putteth in the fickle, becaufe the harveft is come.

30 And he faid, Whereunto fhall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparifon fhall we compare it?

31 It is like a grain of muftard-feed, which, when it is fown in the earth, is lefs than all the feeds that be in the carth:

32 But when it is fown it groweth up, and becometh greater than all herbs, and thooteth out great branches; fo that the fowls of the air may lodge under the thadow of it.

33 And with many fuch parables fpake he the word unto them, as they were able to

hear it.

34 But without a parable fpake he not unto them: and when they were alone, he expounded all things to his difciples.

35 And the fame day, when the even was come, he faith unto them, Let us pafs over unto the other fide.

36 And when they had fent away the multitude, they took him even as he was in the fhip. And there were allo with hin other little fhips.

37 And there arofe a great form of wind, and the waves beat into the fhip, fo that it was now full.

38 And he was in the hinder part of the ship afleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and fay unto him, Mafter, careft thou not that we perifh?

39 And he arofe, and rebuked the wind, and faid unto the fea, Peace, be ftill. And the wind ceafed and there was a great calin.

40 And he faid unto them, Why are ye fo fearful? how is if that ye have no faith?

41 And they feared exceedingly, and faid one to another, What manner of man is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? CHAP. V.

1 Chrift delivereth the possefed of the legion of devils: 13 they enter into the fivine.

Nd they came over unto the other Gide of the fea, into the country of the Gadarenes.

2 And when he was come out of the hip, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean pirit,

3 Who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no man could bind him, no, not with chains:

4 Becaule that he had been often bound with fetters and chains, and the chains had been plucked afander by him, and the fet ters broken in pieces: neither could any man tame him.

5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains, and in the tombs, crying, and cutting himself with ftones.

6 But when he faw Jefus afar off, le ran and worthipped him,

7 And cried with a ford voice, and faid, what have i to do with thee, Jeins, thou Son of the most high God! I adjure thee by God, that thou torment me not.

8 (For he faid unto him, Come out of the man, thou uncican fpirit,)

9 And he asked him, What is thy name? And he answered, faying, My name is Legion: for we are many.

10 And he befought him much that he would not fend them away out of the country. 11 Now there was there, nigh unto the mountains, a great herd of fwine feeding. 12 And all the devils befought him, faying, Send us into the fwine, that we may enter into them.

13 And forthwith Jefus gave them leave. And the unclean fpirits went out, and entered into the fwine, and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the fea, (they were about two thousand,) and were choked

in the fea.

14 And they that fed the fwine filed, and told it in the city, and in the country. And they went out to see what it was that was done.

15 And they come to Jefus, and fee him that was poffeffed with the devil, and had the legion, fitting, and clothed, and in his right mind; and they were afraid.

16 And they that faw it told them how it befel to him that was poffeffed with the devil, and alfo concerning the (wine.

17 And they began to pray him to depart out of their coasts.

18 And when he was come into the fhip, he that had been poffeffed with the devil prayed him that he might be with him.

19 Howbeit, Jefus fuffered him not; but faith unto him, Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compaffion on thee. 20 And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jefus had done for him, and all men did marvel.

32 And he looked round about to fee her that had done this thing.

33 But the woman, fearing and trembling, knowing what was done in her, came and fell down before him, and told him all the truth.

34 And he faid unto her, Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.

35 While he yet fpake, there came from the ruler of the fynagogues house certain which faid, Thy daughter is dead; why troubleft thon the Mañer any further?

36 Affoon as Jefus heard the word that was fpoken, he faith unto the ruler of the fynagogue, Be not afraid, only believe.

37 And he fuffered no man to follow him, fave Peter, and Jaines, and John the brother of James.

38 And he cometh to the houfe of the ruler of the fynagogue, and feeth the tumult, and them that wept and wailed greatly.

39 And when he was come in, he faith unto them, Why make ye this ado, and weep? the danafel is not dead, but fleepeth.

40 And they laughed him to icorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damfel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damfel was lying.

41 And he took the damfel by the hand, and faid unto her, Talitha-cumi; which is, being interpreted, Damfel, (I fay unto thee,)

arife.

42 And ftraightway the damfel arofe, and walked; for he was of the age of twelve years. And they were astonished with a great aftonishment.

43 And he charged them traitly that no man thould know it; and commanded that fomething thould be given her to eat. CHAP. VI.

1 Chrift is contemned of his countrymen. 27 John Baptift beheaded.

21 1 And when Jefus was paffed over again by fhip unto the other fide, much people gathered unto him; and he was nigh unto the 22 And, behold, there cometh one of the Ainto his own country, and his disciples

rulers of the fynagogue, Jairus by name; and when he faw him, he fell at his feet,

23 And befought him greatly, faying, My little daughter fieth at the point of death; I pray thee, come and lay thy hands on her, that the may be healed, and the thall live.

24 And Yefs went with him; and much people followed him, and thronged him. 25 And a certein woman, which had an iffue of blood twelve years,

26 And had fuffered many things of many phyficians, and had spent all that the had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, 27 When he had heard of Jefus, came in the prefs behind, and touched his garment: 28 For the faid, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole.

29 And ftraightway the fountain of her blood was dried up and the felt in her body that the was healed of that plague.

30 And Jefus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the prefs, and faid, Who touched my clothes?

31 And his difciples faid unto him, Thou feeft the multitude thronging thee, and fayest thou, Who touched me!

he went out from thence, and came

followed him.

2 And when the fabbath-day was come he began to teach in the fynagogue: and many hearing him were aitonished, faying, From whence hath this man thele things? and what wifdom is this which is given unto him, that even fuch mighty works are wrought by his hands?

3 is not this the carpenter, the fon of Mary, the brother of James, and Jofes, and of Juda, and Simon and are not his lifters here with us? And they were offended at him.

4 But Jefus faid unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own houfe.

5 And he could there do no mighty work, fave that he laid his hands upon a few fick folk, and healed them.

6 And he marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went round about the vil lages teaching.

7 And he called unto him the twelve and began to fend them forth by two and two; and gave them power over unclean fpirits;

8 And commanded them that they thould take nothing for their journey, fave a fiaff

only; no fcrip, no bread, no money in their purfe:

9 But be fhod with sandals; and not put on two coats.

10 And he faid unto them, In what place foever ye enter into an houfe, there abide till ye depart from that place.

11 And whofoever fhall not receive you, nor hear you, when ye depart thence, fake off the duft under your feet for a teftimony againit them. Verily I fay unto you, It fhall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah, in the day of judgment, than for that city.

12 And they went out, and preached that men fhould repent.

13 And they caft out many devils, and anointed with oil many that were fick, and healed them.

14 And king Herod heard of him; (for his name was fpread abroad;) and he faid, That John the Baptift was rifen from the dead, and therefore mighty works do fhew forth themselves in him.

15 Others faid, That it is Elias. And others faid, That it is a prophet, or as one of the prophets.

16 But when Herod heard thereof he faid, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is rifen from the dead.

17 For Herod himself had fent forth and laid hold upon John, and bound him in prifon for Herodias sake, his brother Philips wife; for he had married her.

18 For John had faid unto Herod, It is not lawful for thee to have thy brothers wife.

19 Therefore Herodias had a quarrel againft him, and would have killed him; but the could not.

20 For Herod feared John, knowing that he was a juft man, and an holy, and obferved him; and hen he heard him, he did many things, and heard him gladly.

21 And when a convenient day was come, that Herod, on his birth-day, made a upper to his lords, high captains, and chief tes of Galilee;

22 And when the daughter of the faid Herodias came in and danced, and pleafed Herod, and them that fat with him, the king faid unto the damfel, Aik of me what 1oever thou wilt, and I will give it thee.

23 And he fware unto her, Whatfoever thou shalt afk of me, I will give it thee, unto the half of my kingdom.

24 And the went forth, and faid unto her mother, What shall I afk? And the faid, The head of John the Baptift.

25 And the came in itraightway with hafte unto the king, and afked, faying, I will that thou give me, by and by in a charger, the head of John the Baptift.

26 And the king was exceeding forry; yet, for his oaths fake, and for their fakes which fat with him, he would not reject her.

27 And immediately the king fent an executioner, and commanded his head to be brought: and he went and beheaded him in the prifon;

28 And brought his head in a charger, and gave it to the damfel: and the damfel gave it to her mother.

29 And when his disciples heard of #, they came and took up his corple, and laid it in a tomb.

30 And the apofiles gathered themselves together unto Jefus, and told him all things, both what they had done, and what they had taught.

31 And he faid unto them, Come ye your felves apart into a defert place, and reft a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leifure fo mech as to cat. 34 And they departed into a defert place by thip privately.

33 And the people faw them departing, and many knew him, and ran a-foot thither out of all cities, and out-went them, and came together unto him.

34 And Jefus, when he came out, law much people, and was moved with compaflion toward them, because they were as theep not having a thepherd: and he began to teach them many things.

35 And when the day was now far fpent, his difciples came unto him, and fald, 'This is a defert place, and now the time is far palled;

36 Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the vil lages, and buy themfelves bread: for they have nothing to cat.

37 He answered, and faid unto them, Give ye them to eat. And they fay unto him. Shall we go and buy two hundred pennyworth of bread, and give them to eat?

38 He faith unto them, How many loaves have yet go and fee. And when they knew, they fay, Five, and two fishes.

39 And he commanded them to make all fit down by companies upon the green graf. 49 And they fat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties.

41 And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fifhes, he looked up to heaven, and bleffed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his difciples to fet before them; and the two ihes divided he among them all.

42 And they did all cat, and were filled. 43 And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes.

44 And they that did cat of the loaves, were about five thousand men,

45 And ftraightway he contrained his difciples to get into the hip, and to go to the other fide before unto Bethfaida, while he fent away the people.

46 And when he had fent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray.

47 And when even was come, the thip was in the midst of the fea, and he alone on the land.

48 And he faw them tolling in rowing: (for the wind was contrary unto them) and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the fea, and would have paffed by them.

49 But when they faw him walking upon. the fea, they fuppofed it had been a spirit. and cried out:

50 (For they all faw him, and were troubled:) and immediately he talked with them, and faith unto them, be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

51 And he went up unto them into the hip, and the wind cafed: and they were

sere amazed in themselves beyond meature, and wondered.

52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. 53 And when they had paffed over, they came into the land of Gennefaret, and drew to the fhore.

54 And when they were come out of the thip, traightway they knew him,

55 And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds thofe that were fick, where they heard he was.

56 And whitherfoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the fick in the fireets, and befought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole. CHAP. VII.

The Pharifees find fault with his difciples for eating with unwafhen hands. 14 Meat defileth not the man.

together him the Tees, and coin of the scribes, which came from Jerufalem.

2 And when they faw fome of his difciples eat bread with defiled (that is to fay, with unwafhen) hands, they found fault,

3 For the Pharifees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, folding the tradition of the elders.

4 And rohen they come from the market, And many except they wash, they eat not. other things there be which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brafen veffels, and of tables.

5 Then the Pharifees and fcribes afked him, Why walk not thy difciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread. with unwafhen hands?

6 He aniwered and faid unto them, Well hath Efaias prophefied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

7 Howbeit, in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of

men.

8 For, laying afide the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the wathing of pots and cups: and many other fuch like things ye do.

9 And he faid unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

10 For Mofes faid, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Wholo curfeth father or mother, let him die the death:

11 But ye fay, If a man ihall fay to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to fay, A gift, by whatfoever thou mighteit be profited by me; he shall be free.

12 And ye fafier him no more to do aught for his father or his mother;

13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many fuch like things do ye.

14 And when he had called all the people unto him, he faid unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand.

15 There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, thofe are they that defile the man.

16 If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when he was entered into the houfe from the people, his difciples alked him concerning the parable.

18 And he faith unto them, Are ye fo without understanding alfo? Do ye not perceive, that whatfoever thing from without cntereth into the man, it cannot defile hiin;

19 Becaufe it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

20 And he faid, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

22 Thefts, covetoufnefs, wickedness, deceit, lafciviouinefs, an evil eye, blafphemy, pride, foolishness:

23 All thefe evil things come from within, and defile the man.

24 And from thence he arofe, and went

into the borders of Tyre and sidon, and en

tered into an houfe, and would have no man know it: but he could not be lid.

25 For a certain woman, whofe young daughter had an unclean fpirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet;

26(The woman was aGreek,a Syrophenician by nation;) and the befought him that he would call forth the devil out of her daughter.

27 But Jefus faid unto her, Let the children firit be filled: for it is not meet to take the childrens bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

28 And the answered and laid unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the childrens crumbs.

29 And he faid unto her, For this faying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter. 30 And when he was come to her houfe, the found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

31 And again, departing from the coafts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the fea of Galilée, through the midft of the coafts of Decapolis.

32 And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his fpeech: and they beféech him to put his hand upon

him.

33 And he took him afide from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he fpit, and touched his tongue;

34 And looking up to heaven, he fighed and faith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened,

35 And straightway his cars were opened, and the string of his tongue was loofed, and he fpake plain.

36 And he charged them that they fhould tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it:

37 And were beyond meature attonithed, faying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the dear to hear, and the dumb to fpeak.
