19 And the ambush arofe quickly out of their place, and they ran affoon as he had Aretched out his hand: and they entered into the city, and took it, and hafted and fet the city on fire.

20 And when the men of Ai looked behind them, they faw, and, behold, the fmoke of the city afcended up to heaven, and they had no power to face this way or that way: and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the purfuers.

21 And when Jothua and all Ifrael faw that

the ambush had taken the city, and that the

fmoke of the city afcended, then they turned again, and flew the men of Ai.

22 And the other iffued out of the city against them; fo they were in the midst of Ifrael, fome on this fide, and fome on that fide: and they fmote them, fo that they let none of them remain or efcape.

23 And the king of Ai they took alive, and brought him to Jothua."

24 And it came to pafs when Ifrael had made an end of Blaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field, in the wilderness wherein they chafed them, and when they were all fallen on the edge to the fword until they were confumed, that all the lfraelites returned unto Ai, and fmote it with the edge of the fword.

25 Andfo it was that all that fell that day, both of men and women, were twelve thoufand, even all the men of Ai.

26 For Joshua drew not his hand back, wherewith he ftretched out the fpear, until he had utterly deftroyed all the inhabitants of Ai,

27 Only the cattle, and the fpuil of that city, Ilrael took for a prey unto themfelves, according unto the word of the LORD, which hecommanded Jothua.

28 And Jofhua burnt Ai, and made an heap for ever, even a defolation unto this day. 29 And the king of Ai be hanged on a tree until even-tide: and, affoon as the fun was down, Joshua commanded that they thould take his carcafe down from the tree, and caft it at the entrance of a gate of the city, and raife thereon a great heap of ftones, that remaineth unto this day.

30 Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Ifrael in mount Ebal;

31 As Mofes the fervant of the LORD, commanded the children of Ifrael, as it is written in the book of the law of Mofes, An altar of whole ftones, over which no man hath lifted up any iron: and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto the LORD: and facrinced peace offerings.

32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Mofes, which he wrote in the prefence of the children of Ifrael.

33 And all Ifrael, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, flood on this fide the ark, and on that fide, before the priests the Leites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the ranger as he that was born among them: half of thein over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Motes, the fervant of the LORD had commanded befure, that they thould bless the people of Liraci.

34 And afterwards he read all the words ofthe law,the bleffing andcurfings,according to all that is written in the book of the law.

35 There was nota word of all that Moses commanded, which Jofhua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the wa men and the little ones, and the strangers that were converfant among them. CHAP. IX.

hills, and in the vallies, and in all the coafts of the great fea over against Lebanon, the Hittite, and the Amorite, the Cananite, the Horizzite, the Havite, and the Jebufite, heard thereof,

2 That they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua, and with Ifrael, with one accord.

3 And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai.

4 They did work wility, and went and made as if they had been ambaladors; and took old facks upon their affes, and winebottles, old, and rent, and bound up;

5 And old shoes clouted upon their feet, and old garments upon them; and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy.

6 And they went to Jofhua unto the camp at Gilgal, and faid unto him, and to the men of Ifrael, We be come from a far country; now therefore, make ye a league with us.

7 And the men of Ifrael faid unto the Hivites, Peradventure ye dwell among us; and how thall we make a league with you?

8 And they faid unto fofhua, We are thy fervants. And Joshua faid unto them, Who are ye? and from whence come ye?

9 And they faid unto him, From a very far country thy fervants are come, because of the name of the LORD thy God for we have heard the fame of him and all that he did in Egypt,

10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that ere beyond Jordan, to Sihon king of Hefhbon, and to Og king of Baihan, which was at Ahtaroth.

11 Wherefore our elders, and all the inhabitants of our country, fpake to us, faying, Take victuals with you for the journey, and go to meet them, and fay unto them, We are your fervants: therefore now make ye a league with us.

12 This our bread we took hot for ou provifion out of our houfes on the day we came forth to go unto you: but now, befield, it is dry, and it is mouldy:

13 d thefe bottles of wine which we fils led were new; and, behold, they be rent; and thefe our garments and our thoes are become old by reafon of the very long journey.

14 And the men took of their victuals, and afked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD.

15 And Jofhua made peace with them, and made a league with them to let then live: and the princes of the congregation fware unto them.

16 And it came to pafs at the end of three days, after they had made a league with

them, that they heard that they were their neighbours, and that they dwelt among them. 17 And the children of Ifraei journeyed, and came unto their cities on the third day. Now their cities quere Gibeon, and Chophitab, and Beeroth, and Kirjath-jearim.

18 And the children of Ifrael fmote them not, because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto them by the LORD God of Irael. And all the congregation murmured against the princes..

19 But all the princes faid unto all the congregation, We have fworn unto them by the LORD God of Ifrael: now, therefore, we may not touch them.

10 This we will do to them; we will even let them live, left wrath be upon us, becaufe of the oath which we fware unto them.

21 And the princes fald unto them, Let them live; but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation; as the princes had promised them.

22 And Jothua called for them, and he fpake unto them, faying, Wherefore have ye beguiled us, faving, We are very far from you, when ye dwell among us?

23 Now, therefore, ye are curfed; and there fhall none of you be freed from being bondmen, and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God.

24 And they answered Joshua, and faid, Because it was certainly told thy fervants, how that the LORD thy God commanded his fervant Moles to give you all the land, and to deftroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you, therefore we were fore afraid of our lives because of you, and have done this thing.

25 And now, behold, we are in thine hand: as it feemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us, do.

26 And fo did he unto them, and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Ifracl, that they flew them not.

27 And Joshua, made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation, and for the altar of the LORD, even unto this day, in the place which he fhould choofe.

CHAP. X.

1 Five kings war against Gibeon; 6 Johna refcueth it. 12 The fun and moon and fill at the word of Fahua: 43 his return.

Now it came to pafs, when Adoni-zedek

king of Jerufalem had heard how Jofhua had taken Ai, and had utterly dettroy ed it; as he had done to Jericho and her king, so he had done to Ai and her king; and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel, and were among them;

2 That they feared greatly, because Gibeon was a great city, as one of the royal cieles, and because it soas greater than Ai, and all the men thereof were mighty.

3 Wherefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerufalem fent unto Holiam king of Hebron, and unto Piram king of Jarmuth, and unto Japhia king of Lachith, and unto Debir king of Eglon, faying,

4 Come up unto me, and help me, that we may fmite Gibcon: for it hath made peace with Joshua, and with the children of Ifrael.

5 Therefore the five kings of the Amo rites, the king of Jerufalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachifh, the king of Eglon, gathered themfelves together, and went up, they and all their hoits, and encamped before Gibeon, and made war againtt it.

6 And the men of Gibeon fent unto Jofhua to the camp to Gilgal, faying, Slack not thy hand from thy fervants, come up to us quickly, and fave us, and help us: for all the kings of the Amorites that dwell in the mountains are gathered together against us. 7 So Joshua afcended from Gilgal, he, and all the people of war with him, and all the mighty men of valour.

8 And the LORD faid unto Joshua, Fear them not; for I have delivered them into thine hand: there fhall not a man of them stand before thee.

9 Joshua, therefore, came unto them fuddenly, and went up from Gilgal all night.

10 And the LORD discomfited them before Ifrael, and flew them with a great flaughter at Gibeon, and chafed them along the way that goeth up to Beth-horon, and fmote them to Azekal, and unto Makkedah.

11. And it came to pafs, as they fled from before Ifrael, and were in the going down to Beth-horon, that the LORD catt down greate tones from heaven upon them unto Azekah, and they died: they were more which died with hail-flones than they whom the children of Ifrael flew with the sword.

12 Then (pake Joshua to the Lond, in the day when the LORD delivered up the Amorites before the children of Ifrael, and he faid in the fight of Ifrael, Sun, ftand thou Rill upon Gibeon; and thou, moon, in the valley of Ajalon.

13 And the fun tood fill, and the moon flayed, until the people had avenged themseives upon their enemies. is not this written in the book of Jather? So the fun flood fill in the midft of heaven, and hafted not to go down about a whole day.

14 And there was no day like that before it or after it, that the LORD hearkened unto the voice of a man: for the LORD fought for Ifraei.

15 And Jofhua returned, and all Ifrael with him, unto the camp to Gilgal.

16 But thefe five kings fled, and hid themfelves in a cave at Makkedah.

17 And it was told Joshua, faying, The five kings are found hid in a cave at Makkedah. 18 And Joshua faid, Roll great tones upon the mouth of the cave, and fet men by it for to keep them;

19 And flay ye not, but purfue after your enemies, and fmite the hindmoft of them; fuffer them not to enter into their cities: for the LORD your God hath delivered them into your hand.

20 And it came to pafs, when Joshua and the children of Ifrael had made an end of flaying them with a very great flaughter, till they were confumed, that the reft which re mained of them entered into fenced citics.

21 And all the people returned to the camp to Joshua at Makkedal in peace: none mov ed his tongue againit any of the children of Ifracl

22 Then faid Joshua, Open the mouth of that were therein: he left none remaining the cave, and bring out thole five kings unto (according to all that he had done to Eglon, me out of the cave. but destroyed it utterly, and all the fouls that were therein.

23 And they did fo, and brought forth thofe five kings unto him out of the cave, the king of Jerufalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachith, and the king of Eglon.

24 And it came to pafs, when they brought out thofe kings unto Joshua, that Joshua called for all the men of Ifracl, and faid unto the captains of the men war which went with him, Come near, put your feet upon the necks of theie kings. And they came near, and put their feet upon the necks of them.

25 And Jothua faid unto them, Fear not, nor be difmayed, be itrong, and of good courage: for thus fhall the LORD do to all your enemies against whom ye fight.

26 And afterward Jofhna imote them, and flew them, and hanged them on five trees: and they were hanging upon the trees until the evening.

27 And it came to pais, at the time of the going down of the fun, that Joshua commanded, and they took them down off the trees, and caft them into the cave wherein they had been hid, and laid great itones in the caves mouth, which remain until this very day.

28 And that day Jothua took Makkedal, and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and the king thereof he utterly destroyed, them, and all the fouls that were therein: he let none remain: and he did to the king of Makkedah as he did unto the king of Jericho.

29 Then Joshua paffed from Makkedah, and all lirael with him, unto Libnah, and fought against Libnah:

30 And the LORD delivered it alfo, and the king thereof, into the hand of Irael; and he fmote it with the edge of the word, and all the fouls that were therein: he et none remain in it; but did unto the king thereof as he did unto the king of Jericho.

31 And Jothua paffed from Libnah, and all Ifrael with him, unto Lachith, and encamped againft it, and fought against it:

32 And the LORD delivered Lachith into the hand of Ifrael, which took it on the fecond day, and fmote it with the edge of the fword, and all the fouls that were therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah. 33 Then Horam king of Gezer came up to help Lachith; and Jofhua fmote him and his people, until he had left him none remaining.

34 And from Lachifh Joshua paffed unto Eglon, and all Ifrael with him, and they encamped against it, and fought against it:

35 And they took it on that day, and finote it with the edge of the fword; and all the fouls that were therei he utterly destroyed that day, according to all that he had done to Lachifh.

38 And Jothua returned, and all Ifrael with him, to Debir, and fought againit it:

39 And he took it, and the king thereof, and all the cities thereof, and they fmote them with the edge of the fword, and utterly destroyed all the fouls that were therein; he left none remaining: as he had done to Hebron, fo he did to Debir, and to the king thereof, as he had done alfo to Libnah, and to her king.

40 So Joshua fmote all the country of the hills, and of the fouth. and of the vale, and of the fprings, and all their kings; he left none remaining, but utterly deftroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Ifrael com

manded.

41 And Joshua fmote them from Kadethbarnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of othen even unto Gibeon.

42 And all thefe kings, and their land, did Jothua take at one time: because the LORD God of Ifrael fought for ffrael.

43 And Joshua returned, and all Ifrael with him, unto the camp, to Gilgal. CHAP. XI. Diverfe kings overcome at the waters of Merom. 10 Hazar is taken and burnt. 21 The Anakims cut off.

1

Nd it came to pafs, when Jabin king of Hazor had heard thofe things, that he .ent to Jobab king of Madon, and to the king of Shimron, and to the king of Achthaph,

2 And to the kings that were on the north of the mountains, and of the plains fouth of Chinneroth, and in the valley, and in the borders of Dor on the weft;

3 And to the Canaanite on the caft and on the weit, and to the Amorite, and the Hittire, and the Perizzite, and the Jebulite in the mountains, and to the Hivite under Hermon, in the land of Mizpeh.

4 And they went out, they and all their horts with them, much people, even as the tand that is upon the fea-thore in multitude, with horfes and chariots very many.

5 And when all thefe kings were met together, they came and pitched together at the waters of Merom, to fight against Irael.

6 And the LouD faid unto Joshua, Be not afraid because of them; for to-morrow about this time will I deliver them up all lain be fore Ifrael; thou thalt hough their horfes, and burn their chariots with fire.

So Jothua came, and all the people of war with him, against them by the waters of Merom fuddenly, and they fell upon them.

8 And the LORD delivered them into the hand of Ifrael, who fmote them, and chafed them unto great Zidon, and unto Mizrephothmain, and unto the valley of Mizpeh eastward; and they imote them until they left them none remaining.

9 And Joshua did unto them as the LORD 36 And Joshua went up from Eglon, and bade him he houghed their horfes, and all Ifrael with him, nto Hebron, and they burnt their chariots with fire. fought against it:

10 And Jathua at that time turned back 37 And they took it, and Imote it with and took Hazor, and fmote the king thereof the edge of the word, and the king thereof, with the fword: for Hazor before-time wa. and all the cities thereof, and all the fouls the head of all thofe kingdoms.

11 And they fmote all the fouls that were therein with the edge of the fword, utterly deltroying them: there was not any left to breathe; and he burnt Hazor with fire.

11 And all the cities of thofe kings, and all the kings of them, did Jothua take, and fmote them with the edge of the fword; and he utterly deftroyed thein, as Moses, the fervant of the LORD, commanded.

13 But as for the cities that flood still in their ttrength, Ifrael burned none of them, fave Hazor only; that did Joshua burn..

14 And all the ipoil of thefe cities, and the cattic, the children of Ifrael took for a prey unto themfelves: but every man they Imote with the edge of the fword, until they had deftroyed them, neither left they any to breathe.

15 As the LORD commanded Mofes his fervant, fo did Mofes command Joihua, and fo did Jofhua: he left nothing undone of all that the LORD coinmanded Mofes.

16 So Jothua took all that land, the hills, and all the fouth country, and all the land of Gothen, and the valley, and the plain, and the mountain of Ifracl, and the valley of the fame:

17 Even from the mount Halak, that goeth up to Seir, even unto Baal-gad, in the valley of Lebanon, under mount Hermon: and all their kings he took, and fmote them, and flew them.

18 Jefhua made war a long time with all thole kings.

19 There was not a city that made peace with the children of Ifrael fave the Hivites the inhabitants of Gibeon; all other they took in battle:

20 For it was of the LORD to harden their hearts, that they thould come againft Ifrael in battle, that he might destroy them utter ly, and that they might have no favour, but that he might dettioy them; as the LORD commanded Moles.

21 And at that time came Jofhua, and cut off the Anakims from the mountains; from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the mountains of Judah, and from all the mountains of Ifrael: Jothua deltroyed them utterly with their cities.

22 There was none of the Anakims left in the land of the children of Israel; only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Athdod, there remained.

23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD faid unto Mofes ; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance unto Ifrael, according to their divifions by their tribes. And the land refted from wai.

All the inhabitants of the hill-country, from Lebanon unto Mifrephoth-maim, and all the Sidonians: them will I drive out from before the children of Ifrael; only divide thon it by lot unto the Ifraelites for an inheritance, as I have commanded thee.

7 Now therefore, divide this land for an inheritance unto the nine tribes, and the halftribe of Manaffeh,

8 With whom the Reubenites and the Gadites have received their inheritance, which Mofes gave them, beyond Jordan eattward, even as Mofes, the fervant of the LORD, gave

them:

9 From Aroer, that is upon the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midit of the river, and all the plain of Medeba unto Dibon;

10 And all the cities of Sihon king of the Amorites, which reigned in Hethbon, unto the border of the children of Ammon:

13 Nevertheless, the children of Ifracl, expelled not the Gefhurites, nor the Maachathites: but the Gethurices and the Maachathites dwell among the Ifraelites until this day.

14 Only unto the tribe of Levi he gave none inheritance: the facrifices of the LORD God of Israel made by fire are their inheritance, as he faid unto them.

15 And Mofes gave unto the tribe of the

children of Reuben inheritance according to

their families.

16 And their coaft was from Aroer, that is on the bank of the river Arnon, and the city that is in the midst of the river, and all the plain by Medeha;

24 And Mofes gave inheritance unto the tribe of Gad, even unto the children of Gad, according to their families:

25 And their coait was Jazer, and all the cities of Gilead, and half the land of the children of Ammon, unto Aroer that is before Rabbah;

28 This is the inheritance of the children of Gad after their families, the cities, and their villages.

29 And Mofes gave inheritance unto the half-tribe of Manafleh: and this was the pufJelion of the half-tribe of the children of Manaffel by their families.
