Sauf fecketh to come to Keilah, to destroy the city for my fake.

I Will the inen of Keilah deliver me up into his hand? will Saul come down, as thy servant hath heard? O LORD God of Ifracl, I befcech thee, tell thy fervant. And the LORD faid, He will come down.

12 Then faid David, Will the men of Keilah deliver me and my men into the hand of Saul? And the LORD faid, 'They will deliver thee up.

139 Then David and his men, which were about fix hundred, arofe and departed out of

Keilah, and went whitherfoever they could ANd it came to pals, when. Sanl was re

go. And it was told Saul that David was efcaped from Keilal; and he forbare to go forth. 14 And David abode in the wildernefs in ftrong holds, and remained in a mountain in the wildernefs of Ziph; and Saul fought him every day; but God delivered him not into his hand.

15 And David saw that Saul was come out to feek his life and David was in the wildernefs of Ziph in a wood..

16 And Jonathan, Sauls fon, arofe, and went to David into the wood, and itrengthened

his hand in God.

17 And he faid unto him, Fear not; for the hand of Saul my father thall not find thee: and thou shalt be king over Ifrael, and I thall be next unto thee; and that alfo Saul my father knoweth.

18 And they two made a covenant before the LORD. And David abode in the wood, and Jonathan went to his houfe.

19 Then came up the Ziphites to Saul to Gibeah, faying, Doth not David hide himself with us in ftrong holds in the wood, in the hill of Hachilah, which is on the fouth of Jeshimon?

20 Now, therefore, O king, come down according to all the defire of thy foul to come down; and our part fhall be to deliver him into the kings hand.

21 And Saul faid, Bleffed be ye of the LORD; for ye have compaflion on me.

22 Go, I pray you, prepare yet, and knew and fee his place where his haunt is, and who hath feen him there: for it is told me that he dealeth very fubtilly.

23 See, therefore, and take knowledge of all the lurking-places where he hideth him felf, and come ye again to me with the certainty, and I will go with you: and it thall come to pals, if he be in the land, that I will fearch him out throughout all the thoufands of Judah.

24 And they arofe, and went to Ziph before Saul: but David and his men were in the wildernefs of Maon, in the plain on the fouth of Jefhimon.

25 Saul alfo and his men went to feek him. And they told David: wherefore he came down into a rock, and abode in the wildernels of Maon; and when Saul heard that, he purfued after David in the wilder

nefs of Maon.

26 And Saul went on this fide of the mountain, and David and his men on that fide of the mountain and David made hafte to get away for fear of Saul; for Saul and his men compalled David and his men round about to take them.

turned from following the Philiftines, that it was told him, faying, Behold, David is in the wildernels of En-gedi.

2 Then Saul took three thoufandclofenmen out of all firael, and went to feek David and his men upon the rocks of the wild-goats.

3 And he came to the theep-cotes by the way, where was a cave; and Saul went in to cover his feet: and David and his men remained in the fides of the cave.

4 And the men of David faid unto him; Behold the day of which the LORD faid unto thee, Behold, I will deliver thine enemy into thine hand, that thou mayeit do to him as it thall feem good unto thee. Then David arofe, and cut off the skirt of Sauls robe privily.

5 And it came to pals afterward, that Da vids heart imote him, becaufe he had cu off Sauls fkirt.

6 And he faid unto his men, The LoaD forbid that I fhould do this thing unto my matter, the Loans anointed, to stretch forth mine hand againit him, feeing he is the anointed of the LORD.

7 So David ftayed his fervants with these words, and fuffered them not to rife againit Saul. But Saul rofe up out of the cave, and went on his way.

8 David alfo arofe afterward, and went out of the cave, and cried after Saul, faying, My lord the king. And when Saul looked behind him, David tooped with his face to the earth, and bowed himfelf.

9 And David faid to Saul, Wherefore hearett thou mens words, faying, Behold, David secketh thy hurt?

10 Behold, this day thine eyes have feen how that the LORD had delivered thee today into mine hand in the cave: and fome bade me kill thee; but mine eye fpared thee: and I faid, I will not put forth mine hand againit my lord; for he is the LORDS

anointed.

11 Moreover, my father, fee; yea, fee the skirt of thy robe in my hand: for in that I cut off the fkirt of thy robe, and killed thee not, know thou and fee, that there is neither evil nor tranfgrefon in mine hand, and I have not finned against thee; yet thou huntett my foul to take it.

12 The LORD judge between me and thee, and the LORD avenge me of thee; but mine hand thall not be upon thee.

13 As faith the proverb of the ancients, Wickednel's proceedeth from the wicked: but mine hand thall not be upon thee.

14 After whom is the king of Ifrael come out? after whom doft thou purfue? after a dead dog after a fica?

15 The LORD, therefore, bejudge, and judge between me and thee, and fee, and plead my caufe, and deliver me cut of thine hand. 16 And it came to país, when David had made an end of speaking these words unto Saul, that Saul faid, Is this thy voice, my fon David? and Saul lifted up his voice and wept. 17 And he faid to David, Thou art more righteous than 1; for thon hatt rewarded me good, whereas I have rewarded thee evil.

18 And thou haft fhewed this day how that thou haft dealt well with me: forafmuch as, when the LORD had delivered me into thine hand, thou killedit me not.

19. For if a man find his enemy, will he fet him go well away? Wherefore, the LORD reward thee good for that thou hait done unto me this day.

20 And now, oehold, I know wel that thou thalt furely be king, and that the kingdom of Ifrael fhall be effablished in thine hand.

21 Swear now, therefore, unto me by the LORD, that thou wilt not cut off my feed after me, and that thou wilt not destroy my name out of my fathers houfe.

22 And David fware unto Saul. And Saul went home; but David and his men gat them up unto the hold.

CHAP. XXV.

1 Samuel dieth. 10 David, provoked by Na-

14 Abigail, by her wisdom, pacifieth David.
33 Nabal, hearing thereof, dieth.

were gathered together, and lamented
him, and buried him in his houfe at Ra-
mah. And David arofe, and went down to
the wilderness of Paran.

2 And there was a man in Maon, whofe Roffedions were in Carmel; and the man was very great, and he had three thoufand theep, and a thoufand goats: and he was thearing his theep in Carmel.

3 Now the name of the man was Nabal, and the name of his wife Abigail; and the was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churiith, and evil in his doings; and he was of the houfe of Caleb.

4 And David heard in the wilderness that Nabal did thear his theep..

5 And David fent out ten young men, and David faid unto the young men, Get ye up to Carmel, and go to Nabal, and greet him in my name.

6 And thus fhall ye fay to him that liveth in profperity, Peace be both to thee, and peace be to thine houfe, and peace be unto all that thou haft.

7 And now I have heard that theu balt fhearers: now, thy thepherds which were with us, we lartrt them not, neither was there ought miffing unto them, all the while they were in Carmel.

Aik thy young men, and they will fhew thee; wherefore, let the young men find favour in thine eyes; (for we come in a good day; give, I pray thee, whattoever cometh to thine hand unto thy fervants, and to thy fon David.

9 And when Davids young men came, They spake to Nabal according to all thofe wards, in the name of David, and repfed.

10 And Nabal answered Davids servants; and faid, Who is David? and who is the fon of Jeffe? There be many servantsnow-a-days that break away every man from his matter. 11 shall I then take my bread and my water, and my fleth that i have killed for my fhearers, and give it unto men whom I know not whence they be?

12 So Davids young men turned their way, and went again, and came and told him ali thofe fayings.

13 And David laid unto his men, Gird ye on every man his fword. And they girded on every man his word, and David alfo girded on his fword; and there went up after David about four hundred men, and two hundred abode by the fluff.

14 But one of the young men told Abigail, Nabals wife, faying, Behold, David fent mefiengers out of the wilderness to falute our maiter; and he railed on them.

15 But the men were very good unto us, and we were not hurt, neither miffed we any thing, as long as we were converfant with them, when we were in the fields.

16 They were a wall unto us both by night and day, all the while we were with them keeping the theep.

17 Now therefore know, and confider what thou wilt do; for evil is determined againit our matter, and again all his household: for he is such a fon of Belial that a man cannot fpeak to him.

18 Then Abigail made hafte, and took two hundred loaves, and two bottles of wine, and five theep ready dreffed, and five meafures of parched corn, and an hundred clutters of raifins, and two hundred cakes. of figs, and laid them on affes.

19 And the faid unto her fervants, Go on, before me: behold, I come after you. But the told not her husband Kabal.

20 And it was fo, as the rode on the afs, that he came down by the covert of the hill, and, behold, David and his men came down against her; and the met them.

21 (Now David had faid, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, fo that nothing was miffed of all that pertained unto him; and he hath requited me evil for good.

22 So and more allo do God unto the ene mies of David, if I leave of all that pertain to him, by the morning light, any that piffeth against the wall.)

23 And when Abigail faw David, the katted, and lighted off the afs, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,

24 And fell at his feet, and faid, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be; and let thine handmaid, I pray thee, fpeak in thine audience, and hear the words of thine handmaid.

25 Let not my lord, I pray thee, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, fo is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I thine handmaid faw not the young men of my lord, whom thou didit fend.

26 Now therefore, my lord, as the Lordi Hiveth, and as thy foulliveth, fecing the Long hath with-holden thee from coming to hes bloed, and from avenging thyself with thing

own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that feek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

27 And now this blefling, which thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my

lord.

28 I pray thee, forgive the trefpafs of thine handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a fure houfe; becaufe my lord fighteth the battles of the Loan, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.

29 Yet a man is rifen to purfue thee, and to feek thy foul: but the foul of my lord thall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD thy God; and the fouls of thine enemies, them fhall he fling out, as out of the middle of a fling.

30 And it thall coine to pafs, when the LORD fhall have done to my lord according to all the good that he hath ipoken concerning thee, and thall have appointed thee ruler over Ifrael,

31 That this fhall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou haft thed blood caufelefs, or that my lord hath avenged himself: but when the Loan thall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.

32 And David faid to Abigail, Bleffed be the LORD God of Ifrael, which fent thee this day to meet me:

33 And bleed be thy advice, and bleffed be thou which haft kept me this day from coming to fhed blood, and from avenging myfelf with mine own hand.

34 For in very deed, ar the LORD God of Israel liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadst halted, and come to meet me, furely there had not been left unto Nabal, by the morning light, any that piffeth against the wall.

35 So David received of her hand that which the had brought him, and faid unto her, Go up in peace to thine houfe: lec, 1 have hearkened to thy voice, and have accepted thy perion.

36 And Abigail came to Nabal: and, behold, he held a fealt in his houfe like the feat of a king; and Nabals heart us merry within him, for he was very drunken: wherefore the told him nothing, lels or more, until the inorning light.

37 But it came to país in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him there things, that his heart died withia him, and he became as a itone.

38 Andit came to pafs, about ten days after, that the LORD finote Nabal, that he died.

of the fervants of my lord.

42 And Abigail hafted and arofe, and rode
upon an afs, with five damsels of hers that
went after her; and the went after the mes-
fengers of David, and became his wife.

39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he faid, Bletfed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the caufe of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his fervant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickednefsol Nabal upon his own head. And David fent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife..

43 David alfo took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were alfo both of them his wives. 44 But Saul had given Michal his daughter, Davids wife, to Phalti, the fon of Laith, which was of Gallin.

40 And when the fervants of David were come to Abigail, to Carmel, they fpake unto her, faying, David fent us unto thee to take

thee to him to wife.

2 Then Saul arofe, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thoufand chofen men of lirael with him, to feek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jethimon, by the way: but David abode in the wildernets; and he faw that Saul came after him into the wildernels.

4 David, therefore, fent out fpies, and underitood that Saul was come in very deed.

5 And David arofe, and came to the place where Saul had pitched; and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner, the fon of Ner, the captain of his hoft: and Sal lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.

6 Then anfwered David, and faid to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abithai, the fon of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with nie to Saul to the camp! And Abithai faid, I will go down with thee.

7 So David and Abifhal came to the peo ple by night, and, behold, Saul lay deeping within the trench, and his fpear ituck in the ground at his boliter: but Abner and the people lay round about him.

8 Then faid Abifhai to David, God hath delivered thune enemy into thine hand this day; now, therefore, let me finite him, I pray thee, with the fpear, even to the earth at once, and I will not fite him the ccond

time.

9 And David faid to Abithai, Deltroy him not; for who can ftretch forth his hand. gainft the LORDS anointed and be guiltless?

10 David faid furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD thall finite him; or his day fhall come to die; or he thall defcend into battle and perith.

11 The LORD forbid that I should ftretch forth mine hand againit the LORDS auointed: but, I pray thee, take thounow the fpear that is at his bolter, and the crufe of water, and let us go.

12 So David took the fpear and the crufe of water from Sauls boliter; and they gat them away, and no man law it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all afleep: becaufe a deep deep from the LORD was fallen upon them.

13 Then David went over to the other fide, and food on the top of an hili alar off; (a great Ipace being between them :)

15 And David faid to Abner, Art not thou
a valiant man? and who is like to thee in
Ifrael? wherefore then haft thou not kept
thy lord the king? for there came one of the
people in to deltroy the king thy lord.

16 This thing is not good that thou hatt done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your mafier, the LORDS anointed: and now fee where the kings fpear is, and the crufe of water that reas at his boltter.

17 And Saul knew Davids voice, and faid, Is this thy voice, my fon David? And David said, it is my voice, any lord, O king.

18 And he faid, Wherefore doth my lord thas purfue after his fervant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand?

19 Now, therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his fervant: If the LORD have flirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the Children of men, curfed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, Taying, Go, ferve other gods.

20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD; for the king of Ifrael is come out to feek a Hea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains

21 Then faid Saul, I have finned: return my fon David; for I will no more do thee harm, becaufe my foul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

22 And David anfwered and faid, Behold the kings fpear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.

23 The LORD render to every man his righteoufnefs, and his faithfulnels: for the

LORD delivered thee into my hand to day;

but I would not ftretch forth mine hand

15 And Samuel faid to Saul, Why hatt thou diquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul antwered, I am fore diftreffed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me, and answereth me no more neither by prophets nor by dreams; therefore I have called thee, that thou mayelt make known unto me what I thall do.

16 Then faid Samuel, Wherefore then doft thou afk of me, fecing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?

17 And the LORD hath done to him as he fpake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David:

18 Becaule thou obeyedit not the voice of the LORD, nor executedit his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

19 Moreover, the LORD will alfo deliver Ifrael with thee into the hand of the Philistines; and to morrow halt thou and thy fons be with me: the LORD alfo fhall de liver the hoft of Ifrael into the hand of the Philistines.

20 Then Saul fell ftraightway all along on the earth, and was fore afraid, because of the words of Samuel: and there was no Arength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

21 And the woman came unto Saul, and faw that he was fore troubled, and faid unto him, Behold, thine handmaid hath obeyed thy voice and I have put my life in my hand, and have hearkened unto thy words which thou fpakelt unto me:

and let me fet à morfel of bread before thee; and cat, that thou mayeft have ftrength when thou goest on thy way.

23 But he refufed, and faid, I will not eat. But his fervants, together with the woman, compelled him, and he hearkened unto their voice; fo he arofe from the earth, and fat upon the bed.

24 And the woman had a fat calf in the houfe; and the hatted and killed it, and took four, and kneaded it, and did bake unleavened bread thereof:

3 Then faid the princes of the Philistines, What do thefe Hebrews here? And Achith faid unto the princes of the Philiftines, Is not this David, the fervant of Saul, the king of Ifrael, which hath been with me thefe days, or thefe years, and I have found no fault in him fince he fell unto me unto this day?
