and let the dry land appear. And it was so. And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters he called Seas. And God saw that it was good. And God said, Let the earth bring forth the green herb, even such as may yield seed, and the fruit-tree yielding fruit after its kind, which may have seed in itself, upon the earth. And it was so. And the earth brought forth the green herb, even such as yieldeth seed according to its kind, and the tree that bears fruit which hath seed in it, according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the third day.

And God said, Let there be light in the firmament of the heaven to divide between the day and the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and for years, and let them be for lights in the firmament of heaven, to give light upon the earth. And God made two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night, and also the stars; and he set them in the firmament of heaven to shine upon the earth, and to rule the day and the night, and to divide between the light and the darkness. And God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

And God said, Let the waters bring forth the creeping creature having life, and the fowl that may fly over the earth on the face of the firmament of heaven And God created great whales, and every living and moving creature, which the waters brought forth, according to their kinds, and every winged fowl according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the sea, and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

And God said, Let the earth bring forth the

living creature in its kind, cattle and creeping things, and beasts of the earth according to their kinds. And it was so. And God made the beasts of the earth, according to their kinds, and cattle, and every thing that creepeth on the earth, after its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God said, Let us make man in our image* and likeness, and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that creepeth upon the earth. And God created man in his own image, male and female he created them. And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures, that move upon the earth. And God said, Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed upon the earth, and all trees that bear in themselves seed of their own kind, to be your food. And to all beasts of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb to feed upon. it was so. And God saw all the things that he had made, and they were very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

And

So the heavens and the earth were finished, and all their army: and on the seventh day, God ended his work, which he had made, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work. which he had created and done. And he blessed the seventh day, and made it holy, because in it he had rested from all his work, which he had created and done.

LESSON II.

Hymns of Praise to God on the Creation. Extracted from the book of Psalms.

BLESS the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, thou art exceedingly great, thou art clothed with honour and majesty, and art covered with light as with a garment: who stretchest out the heaven like a curtain; who constructeth his upper

chambers in the waters; who maketh the clouds his chariot who walketh upon the wings of the wind who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a burning fire: who founded the earth upon its own bases; it shall not be moved for ever. Thou coveredst it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At thy rebuke they fled, at the voice of thy thunder they hasted away. The mountains ascend, and the valleys descend into the place which thou hast founded for them. Thou hast set a bound that they shall not pass over, neither shall they return to cover the earth.

He sendeth forth springs in the vales; they run between the hills. They give drink to every beast of the field; the wild asses quench their thirst. By them shall the fowls of the heaven nave their dwelling, which give forth their voices among the branches. He watereth the hills from his upper chambers; the earth shall be filled with the fruit of thy works, bringing forth grass for cattle, and herb for the service of man, that he may bring bread out of the earth; and wine that may cheer the heart of man, and oil to make his face to shine, and bread to strengthen man's heart.

The trees of Jehovah are filled, and the cedars of Lebanon which he hath planted. There the birds make their nests. The fir-trees are the house of the stork. The high hills are a refuge for the antelope, and the rocks for the shaphans."

*

* Shaphans, rendered Conies in the Authorised Version, and Irchins in the Douay; an animal now generally believed to be somewhat like a rabbit, which inhabits the rocks of mount Libanus. This animal is called the DamanIsrael, and agrees to the various notices of the Shaphan in Scripture. We have given the original Hebrew name Shaphan, having no name equivalent to it in English.

He made the moon for seasons: the sun knoweth his going down. Thou appointedst darkness and it is night: in it all the beasts of the wood go about, the young lions roaring after their prey, and seeking their meat from God. The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens. Man goeth forth to his work, and to his labour, until the evening.

How great are thy works, O Lord! In wisdom hast thou made them all the earth is filled with thy riches so is this great sea, which stretcheth wide its arms. There are creeping things without number, creatures little and great. There go the ships; there is that leviathant which thou hast formed to play therein. These all wait upon thee, that thou mayest give them their food in due season. That which thou givest them, they gather. Thou openest thy hand, they are filled with good. Thou hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die and return to their dust. Thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created; and thou renewest the face of the earth.

May the glory of the Lord endure for ever: the Lord shall rejoice in his works. He looketh on the earth and maketh it tremble; he toucheth the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live. I will sing praise to my God while I have my being. My meditation of him shall be sweet; and I will delight in the Lord. Let sinners be consumed out of the earth, and the unjust so that they be no more. O my soul, bless thou the Lord. Allelujah. Psalm civ.‡ The heavens shew forth the glory of God; and
