PLEYEL'S HYMN.

7.

IGNAGE PLETEL.

20

Humble adoration.

1 HEAVENLY Father, sovereign Lord,
Be thy glorious name adored!
Lord, thy mercies never fail;
Hail, celestial Goodness, hail!
2 Though unworthy of thine ear,
Deign our humble songs to hear;
Purer praise we hope to bring
When around thy throne we sing.
8 While on earth ordained to stay,
Guide our footsteps in thy way,
Till we come to dwell with thee,
Till we all thy glory see.
4 Then, with angel-harps again,
We will wake a nobler strain;
There, in joyful songs of praise,
Our triumphant voices raise.

[blocks in formation]

1 LORD, we come before thee now,
At thy feet we humbly bow;

O do not our suit disdain;
Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain?
2 Lord, on thee our souls depend;
In compassion now descend;
Fill our hearts with thy rich grace,
Tune our lips to sing thy praise.
3 In thine own appointed way,
Now we seek thee, here we stay;
Lord, we know not how to go,
Till a blessing thou bestow.

4 Send some message from thy word, That may joy and peace afford;

Let thy Spirit now impart

Full salvation to each heart.

5 Comfort those who weep and mourn;
Let the time of joy return;
Those that are cast down lift up;
Make them strong in faith and hope.
6 Grant that all may seek and find
Thee, a gracious God and kind:
Heal the sick, the captive free;
Let us all rejoice in thee.

WILLIAM HAMMOND.

22 Tribute of praise at parting.

1 CHRISTIANS, brethren, ere we part, Every voice and every heart

Join, and to our Father raise

One last hymn of grateful praise.

2 Though we here should meet no more, Yet there is a brighter shore;

There, released from toil and pain,
There we all may meet again.

3 Now to thee, thou God of heaven,
Be eternal glory given:

Grateful for thy love divine,
May our hearts be ever thine.

H. KIRKE WHITE, ALT.

23 Concluding prayer and thanksgiving. 1 Now may He who from the dead Brought the Shepherd of the sheep, Jesus Christ, our King and Head, All our souls in safety keep.

2 May he teach us to fulfill What is pleasing in his sight; Make us perfect in his will,

And preserve us day and night.

3 To that great Redeemer's praise,
Who the covenant sealed with blood,
Let our hearts and voices raise
Loud thanksgivings to our God.

JOHN NEWTON,

MONKLAND. 7.

REV. JOHN B. WILKES.

24 Saints and angels praising God. 1 SONGS of praise the angels sang, Heaven with hallelujahs rang, When Jehovah's work begun, When he spake and it was done. 2 Songs of praise awoke the morn, When the Prince of peace was born: Songs of praise arose, when he Captive led captivity.

3 Saints below, with heart and voice, Still in songs of praise rejoice; Learning here, by faith and love, Songs of praise to sing above. 4 Borne upon their latest breath, Songs of praise shall conquer death; Then amid eternal joy,

Songs of praise their powers employ.

JAMES MONTGOMERY.

25 Let all the people praise Him.

1 THANK and praise Jehovah's name; For his mercies, firm and sure, From eternity the same,

To eternity endure.

2 Let the ransomed thus rejoice,
Gathered out of every land,
As the people of his choice,

Plucked from the destroyer's hand.

8 Let the elders praise the Lord,
Him let all the people praise,
When they meet with one accord,
In his courts on holy days.

4 Praise him, ye who know his love;
Praise him from the depths beneath;
Praise him in the heights above;
Praise your Maker, all that breathe.
5 For his truth and mercy stand,
Past, and present, and to be,

Like the years of his right hand, Like his own eternity.

JAMES MONTGOMERY.

26 Praise and prayer.

1 GLORY be to God on high,
God, whose glory fills the sky!
Peace on earth to man forgiven,
Man, the well-beloved of Heaven.
2 Sovereign Father, heavenly King,
Thee we now presume to sing:
Thee with thankful hearts we prove
God of power, and God of love.

3 Christ our Lord and God we own,
Christ, the Father's only Son,
Lamb of God for sinners slain,
Saviour of offending man.

4 Bow thine ear, in mercy bow,
Hear, the world's atonement, thou!
Jesus, in thy name we pray,
Take, O take our sins away.

[blocks in formation]

1 PRAISE the Lord, his glories show,
Saints within his courts below,
Angels round his throne above,
All that see and share his love.

2 Earth to heaven, and heaven to earth,
Tell his wonders, sing his worth;
Age to age, and shore to shore,
Praise him, praise him, evermore!
3 Praise the Lord, his mercies trace;
Praise his providence and grace;
All that he for man hath done;
All he sends us through his Son.
4 Strings and voices, hands and hearts,
In the concert bear your parts;
All that breathe, your Lord adore,
Praise him, praise him, evermore!

[blocks in formation]

1 COME, let us who in Christ believe,
Our common Saviour praise:
To him with joyful voices give
The glory of his grace.

2 He now stands knocking at the door
Of every sinner's heart:

The worst need keep him out no more, Nor force him to depart.

8 Through grace we hearken to thy voice, Yield to be saved from sin;

In sure and certain hope rejoice,
That thou wilt enter in.

4 Come quickly in, thou heavenly Guest, Nor ever hence remove;

But sup with us, and let the feast

Be everlasting love.

CHARLES WESLEY.

Blessing on worshipers.

1 ONCE more we come before our God; Once more his blessing ask:

O may not duty seem a load,

Nor worship prove a task.

2 Father, thy quickening Spirit send
From heaven, in Jesus' name,
And bid our waiting minds attend,
And put our souls in frame.

8 May we receive the word we hear,
Each in an honest heart;

And keep the precious treasure there,
And never with it part.

4 To seek thee, all our hearts dispose;
To each thy blessings suit;
And let the seed thy servant sows
Produce abundant fruit.

JOSEPH HART.

Expecting the blessing.

1 SEE, Jesus, thy disciples see,
The promised blessing give;
Met in thy name, we look to thee,
Expecting to receive.

2 Thee we expect, our faithful Lord,
Who in thy name are joined;
We wait, according to thy word,
Thee in the midst to find.

3 With us thou art assembled here,
But O thyself reveal;

Son of the living God, appear!

Let us thy presence feel.

4 Breathe on us, Lord, in this our day, And these dry bones shall live; Speak peace into our hearts, and say, "The Holy Ghost receive."

[blocks in formation]

1 INFINITE excellence is thine,
Thou glorious Prince of grace!
Thy uncreated beauties shine
With never-fading rays.

2 Sinners, from earth's remotest end,
Come bending at thy feet;

To thee their prayers and songs ascenȧ In thee their wishes meet.

3 Millions of happy spirits live On thy exhaustless store;

From thee they all their bliss receive,
And still thou givest more.

4 Thou art their triumph and their joy,
They find their all in thee;
Thy glories will their tongues employ
Through all eternity.

32 The great and effectual door.
1 JESUS, thou all-redeeming Lord,
Thy blessing we implore;
Open the door to preach thy word,
The great, effectual door.

2 Gather the outcasts in, and save
From sin and Satan's power;
And let them now acceptance have,
And know their gracious hour.

3 Lover of souls! thou know'st to prize
What thou hast bought so dear:
Come, then, and in thy people's eyes
With all thy wounds appear.

4 The hardness of our hearts remove,
Thou who for all hast died;
Show us the tokens of thy love,
Thy feet, thy hands, thy side.

5 Ready thou art the blood to apply,
And prove the record true;
And all thy wounds to sinners cry,
"I suffered this for you.'

33 God, the only object of worship.

1 0 Gon, our strength, to thee our song With grateful hearts we raise; To thee, and thee alone, belong

All worship, love, and praise.

2 In trouble's dark and stormy hour
Thine ear hath heard our prayer;
And graciously thine arm of power
Hath saved us from despair.

3 And thou, O ever gracious Lord,
Wilt keep thy promise still,

If, meekly hearkening to thy word, We seek to do thy will.

4 Led by the light thy grace imparts, Ne'er may we bow the knee

To idols, which our wayward hearts Set up instead of thee.

5 So shall thy choicest gifts, O Lord, Thy faithful people bless;

For them shall earth its stores afford, And heaven its happiness.

HARRIET AUBER.

Vying with the angels.

1 A THOUSAND oracles divine
Their common beams unite,
That sinners may with angels join,
To worship God aright.

2 Triumphant host! they never cease To laud and magnify

The Triune God of holiness,
Whose glory fills the sky.

3 By faith the upper choir we meet,
And challenge them to sing
Jehovah on his shining seat,
Our Maker and our King.

4 But God made flesh is wholly ours,
And asks our noblest strain;
The Father of celestial powers,
The Friend of earthborn man!

Doxology.

CHARLES WESLEY.

To Father, Son, and Holy Ghost,
The God whom we adore,
Be glory, as it was, is now,
And shall be evermore!

Grace, pardon, and life.

1 FATHER of heaven, whose love profound
A ransom for our souls hath found,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy pardoning love extend.
2 Almighty Son, incarnate Word,
Our Prophet, Priest, Redeemer, Lord,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy saving grace extend.
3 Eternal Spirit, by whose breath
The soul is raised from sin and death,
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
To us thy quickening power extend.
4 Jehovah! Father, Spirit, Son,
Mysterious Godhead! Three in One!
Before thy throne we sinners bend;
Grace, pardon, life, to us extend.

136 True worship every-where accepted.

1 OTHOU to whom, in ancient time,
The lyre of Hebrew bards was strung,
Whom kings adored in song sublime,
And prophets praised with glowing tongue;
2 Not now on Zion's height alone
The favored worshiper may dwell,
Nor where, at sultry noon, thy Son
Sat weary by the patriarch's well.
3 From every place below the skies,
The grateful song, the fervent prayer,
The incense of the heart may rise

To Leaven, and find acceptance there.
4 O Thou to whom, in ancient time,
The holy prophet's harp was strung,
To thee at last in every clime,
Shall temples rise and praise be sung.

JOHN PIERPONT.

Trembling aspiration.

10 THOU, whom all thy saints adore,
We now with all thy saints agree,
And how our inmost souls before
hy glorious, awful Majesty.

2 We come, great Cod, to seek thy face,
And for thy loving-kindness weit;
And how dreadful is this place!
'Tis God's own house, 'tis heaven's gate.
8 Tremble our hearts to find thee nigh;
To thee our trembling hearts aspire;

And lo! we see descend from high
The pillar and the flame of fire.

4 Still let it on the assembly stay,
And all the house with glory fill;
To Canaan's bounds point out the way,
And lead us to thy holy hill.

5 There let us all with Jesus stand,
And join the general (hurch above,
And take our seats at thy right hand,
And sing thine everlasting love.

CHARLES WESLEY.
