WARWICK. C. M.

SAMUEL STANLEY,

98 Preparation for public worship.

1 LORD, in the morning thou shalt hear My voice ascending high:

To thee will I direct my prayer,
To thee lift up mine eye:

2 Up to the hills where Christ is gone,
To plead for all his saints,
Presenting, at the Father's throne,
Our songs and our complaints.

3 Thou art a God before whose sight
The wicked shall not stand;
Sinners shall ne'er be thy delight,
Nor dwell at thy right hand.

4 Now to thy house will I resort,
To taste thy mercies there;
I will frequent thy holy court,
And worship in thy fear.
50 may thy spirit guide my feet
In ways of righteousness;
Make every path of duty straight,
And plain before my face.

1 HAPPY the home when God is there, And love fills every breast;

When one their wish and one their prayer And one their heavenly rest.

2 Happy the home where Jesus' name
Is sweet to every ear;

Where children early lisp his fame,
And parents hold him dear.

3 Happy the home where prayer is heard, And praise is wont to rise;

Where parents love the sacred word,
And live but for the skies.

4 Lord, let us in our homes agree,
This blessed peace to gain;
Unite our hearts in love to thee,
And love to all will reign.

PETER RITTER, ARR. BY WILLIAM HENRY MONK.

[blocks in formation]

1 SUN of my soul, thou Saviour dear,
It is not night if thou be near:
O may no earthborn cloud arise
To hide thee from thy servant's eyes.

2 When the soft dews of kindly sleep
My wearied eyelids gently steep,
Be my last thought, how sweet to rest
Forever on my Saviour's breast.

3 Abide with me from morn till eve,
For without thee I cannot live;
Abide with me when night is nigh,
For without thee I dare not die.

4 If some poor wandering child of thine
Have spurned, to-day, the voice divine,
Now, Lord, the gracious work begin;
Let him no more lie down in sin.

5 Watch by the sick; enrich the poor
With blessings from thy boundless store;
Be every mourner's sleep to-night,
Like infant's slumbers, pure and light.

6 Come near and bless us when we wake, Ere through the world our way we take; Till in the ocean of thy love,

We lose ourselves in heaven above.

JOHN KEBLE.

103 Morning mercies, daily discipline. 1 NEW every morning is the love Our wakening and uprising prove; Through sleep and darkness safely brought, Restored to life, and power, and thought.

2 New mercies, each returning day,
Hover around us while we pray;
New perils past, new sins forgiven,
New thoughts of God, new hopes of
heaven.

3 If on our daily course our mind
Be set to hallow all we find,
New treasures still of countless price
God will provide for sacrifice.

4 The trivial round, the common task,
Will furnish all we ought to ask,-
Room to deny ourselves, a road
To bring us daily nearer God.

5 Only, O Lord, in thy dear love
Fit us for perfect rest above;
And help us this, and every day,
To live more nearly as we pray.

JOHN KEBLE.

EVENING HYMN. L. M.

THOMAS TALLIS.

[blocks in formation]

1 GLORY to thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light:
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath the shadow of thy wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord, for thy dear Son,
The ill which I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the judgment-day.

4 0 let my soul on thee repose,

And may sweet sleep mine eyelids close; Sleep, which shall me more vigorous make, To serve my God, when I awake.

5 Lord, let my soul forever share The bliss of thy paternal care:

'Tis heaven on earth, 'tis heaven above, To see thy face, and sing thy love.

[blocks in formation]

3 All praise to thee, who safe hast kept,
And hast refreshed me while I slept:
Grant, Lord, when I from death shall wake,
I may of endless life partake.

4 Lord, I my vows to thee renew:
Disperse my sins as morning dew;
Guard my first springs of thought and will,
And with thyself my spirit fill.

5 Direct, control, suggest this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

That all my powers, with all their might, In thy sole glory may unite.

[blocks in formation]

1 Now doth the sun ascend the sky,
And wake creation with its ray;
Keep us from sin, O Lord most high,
Through all the actions of the day.

2 Curb thou for us the unruly tongue;
Teach us the way of peace to prize;
And close our eyes against the throng
Of earth's absorbing vanities.

30 may our hearts be pure within;
No cherished madness vex the soul:
May abstinence the flesh restrain,
And its rebellious pride control.

4 So when the evening stars appear,
And in their train the darkness bring,
May we, O Lord, with conscience clear,
Our praise to thy pure glory sing.

AMBROSE OF MILAN, TR. BY E. CASWALL.

1 THUS far the Lord hath led me on, Thus far his power prolongs my days; And every evening shall make known Some fresh memorial of his grace.

2 Much of my time has run to waste, And I, perhaps, am near my home; But he forgives my follies past,

And gives me strength for days to come.

3 I lay my body down to sleep;

Peace is the pillow for my head; While well-appointed angels keep

Their watchful stations round my bed.

4 Thus, when the night of death shall come, My flesh shall rest beneath the ground, And wait thy voice to rouse my tomb, With sweet salvation in the sound.

4 Life's tumult we must meet again,
We cannot at the shrine remain;
But in the Spirit's secret cell
May hymn and prayer forever dwell.

SAMUEL LONGFELLOW.

[L. M. 61. Tune, Yoakley. Page 176.]
The soul's Advocate.

1 WHEN, streaming from the eastern skies,
The morning light salutes mine eyes,
O Sun of righteousness divine!
On me with beams of mercy shine;
O chase the clouds of guilt away,
And turn my darkness into day.

2 And when to heaven's all-glorious King
My morning sacrifice I bring,
And, mourning o'er my guilt and shame,
Ask mercy in my Saviour's name;
Then, Jesus, cleanse me with thy blood,
And be my Advocate with God.

1 WE lift our hearts to thee,
O Day-star from on high!
The sun itself is but thy shade,
Yet cheers both earth and sky.
20 let thy rising beams

The night of sin disperse,-
The mists of error and of vice
Which shade the universe.

3 How beauteous nature now! How dark and sad before!

With joy we view the pleasing change, And nature's God adore.

4 0 may no gloomy crime

Pollute the rising day;

Or Jesus' blood, like evening dew,
Wash all the stains away.

5 May we this life improve,
To mourn for errors past;

And live this short revolving day
As if it were our last.

Evening meditation.

1 THE day is past and gone,
The evening shades appear;
O may we all remember well
The night of death draws near.
2 We lay our garments by,
Upon our beds to rest;
So death will soon disrobe us all
Of what we've here possessed.

3 Lord, keep us safe this night,
Secure from all our fears;
May angels guard us while we sleep,
Till morning light appears.

4 And when we early rise,

And view the unwearied sun,
May we set out to win the prize,
And after glory run.

5 And when our days are past,
And we from time remove,
O may we in thy bosom rest,
The bosom of thy love.

JOHN LELAND.

[C. M. Tune, Evan. Page 156.] Protection invoked.

1 IN mercy, Lord, remember me,
Through all the hours of night,
And grant to me most graciously
The safeguard of thy might.

2 With cheerful heart I close mine eyes, [ Since thou wilt not remove;

O in the morning let me rise
Rejoicing in thy love.

3 Or if this night should prove my last, And end my transient days,

Lord, take me to thy promised rest,
Where I may sing thy praise.
