3 He shall descend like showers

Upon the fruitful earth,
And love and joy, like flowers,

Spring in his path to birth:
Before him, on the mountains,

Shall peace, the herald, go, And righteousness, in fountains,

From hill to valley flow.

The glories of Christ's kingdom. 1 HAIL, to the Lord's Anointed,

Great David's greater Son! Hail, in the time appointed,

His reign on earth begun!
He comes to break oppression,

To set the captive free;
To take away transgression,

And rule in equity.
2 He comes with succor speedy

To those who suffer wrong; To help the poor and needy,

And bid the weak be strong: To give them songs for sighing,

Their darkness turn to light, Whose souls, condemned and dying,

Were precious in his sight.

4 To him shall prayer unceasing,

And daily vow's ascend;
His kingdom still increasing,

A kingdom without end:
The tide of time shall never

His covenant remove;
His name shall stand forever;
That name to us is Love.

JANES MONTGOMERY.

Joy to the world.

Justice shall guard his throne above, 1 Joy to the world! the Lord is come:

And peace abound below. Let earth receive her King;

4 To us a Child of hope is born, Let every heart prepare him room,

To us a Son is given; And heaven and nature sing.

The Wonderful, the Counselor, 2 Joy to the world! the Saviour reigns;

The mighty Lord of heaven. Let men their songs employ;

JOHN MORRISOX. While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains,

The Saviour's advent. Repeat the sounding joy.

1 HARK, the glad sound! the Saviour 3 No more let sin and sorrow grow,

comes, Nor thorns infest the ground;

The Saviour promised long; He comes to make his blessings flow

Let every heart prepare a throne, Far as the curse is found.

And every voice a song. 4 He rules the world with truth and grace, 2 He comes, the prisoner to release, And makes the nations prove

In Satan's bondage held; The glories of his righteousness,

The gates of brass before him burst,
And wonders of his love.

The iron letters yield.
ISAAC WATTS.

3 He comes, from thickest alms of vice Wonderful, Counselor.-Isa. 9: 6.

To clear the mental ray, 1 To us a Child of hope is born,

And on the eyes oppressed with night To us a Son is given;

To pour celestial day. Him shall the tribes of earth obey,

4 He comes, the broken heart to bind, Him, all the hosts of heaven.

The wounded soul to cure, 2 His name shall be the Prince of peace, And, with the treasures of his grace, For evermore adored;

To enrich the humble poor. The Wonderful, the Counselor,

5 Our glad hosannas, Prince of peace, The great and mighty Lord.

Thy welcome shall proclaim, 3 His power, increasing, still shall spread; , and heaven's eternal arches ring His reign no end shall know;

With thy beloved name.

Ye have seen his natal star:

Come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King.
