been, to advance truth in a manner plain and intelligible to

an illiterate rcader.

If he have succeeded in this object, he will be indifferent to any criticisms that may be offered on particulars of minor importance.

These discourses have no special claim to originality, On topics which have employed the tongue and pen of controversy for more than two hundred years, nothing materially new can be cxpected, and the author is happy in the

reflection that for the defence of the positions which he has Sa here endeavored to maintain, nothing new is needful.
