to them, since they talked of him, but since they doubted concerning him, he concealed his likeness from their knowledge. But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. R. Thanks be to God.

R. As it began to dawn, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to the sepulchre; * Jesus whom ye seek is not here, for he is risen as he said. He goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him, alleluia, alleluia.

V. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre, at the rising of the sun : and entering, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, who said to them. Jesus whom ye seek is not here. V. Please, Sir, to bless us.

Blessing. May the divine assistance remain with us evermore.

Lesson ii.

He spake indeed, rebuking the hardness of their minds, and expounding the mysteries of holy scripture concerning himself. Nevertheless since he had thus far been as a stranger to their hearts according to their lack of faith, he made as though he would have gone further.' He who is himself simple Truth doth naught of duplicity but he only showed himself to them in body, as he was received by them in mind. For they were to be proven, whether they were able to

love him as a stranger whom they did not yet loveas God.-But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us. R. Thanks be to God.

R. The good shepherd hath arisen, who laid down his life for his sheep, and deigned to die for his flock: * alleluia, alleluia. V. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Alleluia, Glory be to the Father. Alleluia.

V. Please, Sir, to bless us.

Blessing. May the King of Angels bring us to the society of the heavenly citizens. R. Amen.

Lesson iii.

But since they were not able to be strangers to charity with whom the Truth was walking, they invite him to tarry as a stranger to receive their hospitality. Why do we say 'invite', when it is written and they constrained him?' That the example may have the more force to teach us not only to ask strangers to come in, but even to compel them. They then set the table, and offered loaves of bread: and God, whom they had not known in the exposition of holy Scripture, they know in the breaking of bread. So by hearing the precepts of God they were not enlightened, but their eyes were opened in doing them, for it is written: the hearers of the law are not righteous in God's sight, but

the doers of the law shall be justified. Whoever would fain understand that which he has read, let him make haste to fulfil in deed what he has just heard. Behold the Lord is not known while he speaks, but deigns to be known while he is being eaten.-But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us.

R. Thanks be to God.
