chio della fronte troppo fifo rimirate queste terrene cofe; quel della mente una volta inabzando a piu belle confiderazioni, e alle tante meraviglie fparfe dal fummo Dio a benefizio dell' huomo per l' universo; fentii paffarmi il cuore da certo ftimolo, et da, non fo che, christiano compungimento, vedendo come offefa in ogni tempo da noi gravemente, quella inneffabile bonta, benigna ad ogni modo ci fi moftraffe, quelle in un continuo ftato di benificenza ad ufo noftro confervando; e come una fol volta provocata a vendetta, oltre i fuo vafti confini non allargaffe il mare, al fole non ofcuraffe la lúce, fterile non faceffe la terra, per abiffarci per acciécarfi, e per diftruggerfi finalmente. SATIATED and fatigued (gentle reader) by having looked on thefe earthly objects with eyes too intent, and raising therefore the mind to eye of my higher contemplations, to the wonders diffused by the fupreme Being, for the benefit of man, through the universe, I felt my heart penetrated by a certain christian compunction in reflecting how his inexpreffible goodness, though perpetually and grievoufly offended by us, ftill fhews itself in the highest degree indulgent towards us, in preferving those wonders with a continued influence to our advantage; and how, on the firft provocation to vengeance, Almighty Power does not enlarge the ocean to pass its immenfe boundary, does not obfcure the light of the fun, does not impress sterility on the earth, to engulph us, to blind us, and finally to destroy us. Softened and abforbed in these divine emotions, I felt myself transported and hurried, by a delightful violence, into a terrestrial paradife, where I feemed to behold the first man, Adam, a creature

Stet ti pero gran pezza in forfe, s'io doveva e poteva tentare compofizione à me, per molti capi, difficilliffima, poiche cominciando la facra tela della creazione dell' huomo fin la dov' é fcacciato dal paradifo terreftre (che fei hore vi corfero come ben narra Sant Agostino nel libro nella Citta di Dio) non ben lo vedeva come in cinque atti foli, fi brieve fatto raccontar fi poteffe, tanto piu difegnando per ogni atto il numero almeno di fei, o fette fcene. Difficile per la difputa, che fece il Demonio con Eva, prima che l' inducefle a mangiare il pomo, poi che altro non abiamo, fe non il tefto, che ne faccia menzione, dicendo, " Nequaquam moriemini, et eritis ficut Dii, fcientes bonum et malum." Difficile per le parole d' Eva in perfuadere Adamo (che pur aveva il dono della fcienza infufa) à guftar del pomo: ma difficilliffima fopra tutto

I remained, however, a confiderable time in doubt, if I ought, or if I were able, to undertake a compofition moft difficult to me on many accounts, fince, in beginning the facred fubject from man's creation to the point where he is driven from the terrestrial Paradise (a period of fix hours, as Saint Auguftine relates in his book on the City of God) I did not clearly perceive how an action fo brief could be formed into five acts, especially allowing to every act the number of at least fix or seven fcenes; difficult from the difpute that the Devil maintained with Eve, before he could induce her to eat the apple, fince we have only the text that mentions it, in saying " Nequaquam moriemini, et eritis ficut Dii, fcientes bonum et malum;" difficult from the words of Eve, in perfuading Adam (who had indeed the gift of knowledge infufed) to taste the apple; but difficult above all from my own

per la mia debolezza, poiche doveva la compofizione rimaner priva di quegli ornamenti poetici, cofi cari alle mufe: priva di poter trarre le comparazioni da cofe fabrili, introdotte co 'l volger de gli anni, poiche al tempo del primo huomo, non v' era cofa. Priva pur di nominar (mentre pero parla Adamo e con lui fi ragiona) per effempio archi, strali, bipenni, urne, coltelli, fpade, afte, trombe, tamburri, trofei, veffilli, arringhi, martelli, faci, mantici, roghi, teatri, errari, e fomiglianti cofe, ed infinite, havendole tutte introdotte la neceffita del peccato commeffo; e pero come afflitive e di pena, non dovevan paffar per la mente, ne per la bocca d' Adamo, ben che aveffe la scienza infufa, come quegli che nel innocenza feliceffimo fi vivea. E priva eziandio del portare in campo, fatti d' hiftorie facre o profane; del racontare menzogne di favolofi dei; di narrare amori, furori, armi, caccie, pefcaggioni, trionfi, naufragi, incendi, incanti, e fimile cofe, che fono in vero l' ornamento, e lo spirito della poefia. Difficile per non fapere in che stile doveffe parlare Adamo, perche rifguardando al faper fuo, meritava i versi intieri, grandi, sostenuti, numerofi: ma confiderandolo poi paftore e albergatoré de' bofchi, pare che puro e dolce effer doveffe nel fuo parlare, e m' accoftai, percio a questo di renderlo tale piu, ch' io poteffi con verfi interi, e spezzati, e definenze.
