2 From heaven he came, of heaven he spoke,
To heaven he led his foll'wers' way;
Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke,
Unveiling an immortal day.

3 Come, wand'rers, to my Father's home;
Come, all ye weary ones, and rest.
Yes, sacred Teacher! we will come,
Obey, and be forever blest.

4 Decay, then, terements of dust!
Pillars of earthly pride, decay!
A nobler mansion waits the just,
And Jesus has prepared the way.

GRAC

All-sufficient grace.

RACE! 'tis a charming sound, U Harmonious to the ear;

S. M.

Heaven with the echo shall resound,
And all the earth shall hear.

2 Grace first contrived a way
To save rebellious man;

And all the steps that grace display,
Which drew the wondrous plan.

3 Grace taught my roving feet
To tread the heavenly road;
And new supplies each hour I meet,
While pressing on to God.

4 Grace all the work shall crown,
Through everlasting days;

It lays in heaven the topmost stone,
And well deserves our praise.

289

The wonders of redemption.

C. M.

JOW great the wisdom, power, and grace,
Which in redemption shine;

The heavenly host with joy confess
The work is all divine.

cast their crowns,

2 Before his feet they c
Those crowns which Jesus gave,-
And, with ten thousand thousand tongues,
Proclaim his power to save.

3 They tell the triumphs of his cross,
The suff'rings which he bore;

How low he stoop'd, how high he rose,-
And rose to stoop no more.

4 With them let us our voices raise,
And still the song renew;
Salvation well deserves the praise
Of men and angels too.

Efficacy of the atoning blood.

C. M.

THERE is a fountain fill'd with blood,
Drawn from Immanuel's veins;

And sinners, plunged beneath that flood,
Lose all their guilty stains.

2 The dying thief rejoiced to see
That fountain in his day;

And there may I, though vile as he,
Wash all my sins away.

3 Thou dying Lamb! thy precious blood
Shall never lose its power,

Till all the ransom'd Church of God
Are saved, to sin no more.

4 E'er since, by faith, I saw the stream
Thy flowing wounds supply,
Redeeming love has been my theme,
And shall be, till I die.

5 Then in a nobler, sweeter song,
I'll sing thy power to save,

When this poor lisping, stamm'ring tongue, Lies silent in the grave.

291

The joyful sound.

C. M.

SALVATION! O the joyful sound!
What pleasure to our ears;
A sov'reign balm for every wound,
A cordial for our fears.

2 Salvation! let the echo fly
The spacious earth around,
While all the armies of the sky
Conspire to raise the sound.

3 Salvation! O thou bleeding Lamb
To thee the praise belongs:
Salvation shall inspire our hearts,
And dwell upon our tongues.

292

Love which passeth knowledge.
Him who did salvation bring,

Arise, ye needy,-he'll relieve;
Arise, ye guilty, he 'll forgive.

L. M.

2 Ask but his grace, and lo, 'tis given;
Ask, and he turns your hell to heaven:
Though sin and sorrow wound my soul,
Jesus, thy balm will make it whole.
3 To shame our sins he blush'd in blood;
He closed his eyes to show us God;
Let all the world fall down and know,
That none but God such love can show.

4 'Tis thee I love, for thee alone
I shed my tears and make my moan;
Where'er I am, where'er I move,
I meet the object of my love.
5 Insatiate to this spring I fly;
I drink, and yet am ever dry:
Ah! who against thy charms is proof!
Ah! who that loves, can love enough!

5th P. M. 4 lines TB,
Calvary.

WGod descend, in majesty,
THEN on Sinai's top I see
To proclaim his holy law,
All my spirit sinks with awe.
2 When, in ecstasy sublime,
Tabor's glorious steep I climb,
At the too transporting light,
Darkness rushes o'er my sight.
3 When on Calvary I rest,
God, in flesh made manifest,
Shines in my Redeemer's face,
Full of beauty, truth, and grace.
4 Here I would forever stay,-
Weep and gaze my soul away;
Thou art heaven on earth to me,
Lovely, mournful Calvary.

294

Sufficiency and freeness.

WHAT amazing words of grace
Are in the gospel found!

Suited to every sinner's case,
Who knows the joyful sound.

2 Poor, sinful, thirsty, fainting souls,
Are freely welcome here;
Salvation, like a river, rolls,

Abundant, free, and clear.

C. M.

3 Come, then, with all your wants and wounds; Your every burden bring;

Here love, unchanging love, abounds,

A deep, celestial spring.

4 Whoever will-O gracious word!May of this stream partake;

"ome, thirsty souls, and bless the Lord, And drink for Jesus' sake.

[ocr errors]

5 Millions of sinners, vile as you,
Have here found life and peace;
Come, then, and prove its virtues too,
And drink, adore, and bless.

295

S. M.

Christ, the only source of salvation.
OD'S holy law transgress'd,

G Speaks nothing but despair;
Convinced of guilt, with grief oppress'd,
We find no comfort there.

2 Not all our groans and tears,
Nor works which we have done,
Nor vows, nor promises, nor prayers,
Can e'er for sin atone.

3 Relief alone is found

In Jesus' precious blood:

"Tis this that heals the mortal wound, And reconciles to God.

4 This is salvation's source;

And all our hopes arise

From Him, who, hanging on the cross,
A spotless victim dies.

296

HOW

The precious Name.

C. M.

W sweet the name of Jesus sounds In a believer's ear;

It soothes his sorrows, heals his wounds And drives away his fear.

2 It makes the wounded spirit whole, And calms the troubled breast;

'Tis manna to the hungry soul,

And to the weary, rest.

3 Dear Name, the rock on which I build, My shield and hiding-place;

My never-failing-treasure, fill'a

With boundless stores of grace:
