3 The world cannot withstand

Ita Ancient Conqueror;
The world must sink beneath the Hand

Which arms us for the war:
This is the victory, --

Before our faith they fall;
Jesus hath died for you and me;

Believe, and conquer all.

The well-fought day,

without ceasing, pray,
His summons cheerfully obey,

And call upon the Lord :
To God your every want

Ih instant prayer display ;
Pray always; pray, and never faint;

Pray, without ceasing, pray.

2 In fellowship, --alone,

To God with faith draw near;
Approach his courts, besiege his throne

With all the power of prayer:
His mercy now implore,

And now show forth his praise ;
In shouts, or silent awe, adore

His miracles of grace.
8 From strength to strength go on;

Wrestle, and fight, and pray;
Tread all the powers of darkness down,

And win the well-fought day :
Still let the Spirit cry,

In all his soldiers --Come,
Till Christ the Lord descend from high,

And take the conqa'rors home.

Ist P, M, 6 lines 85.

Sober vigilance.
VITS slumber from my spirit shake;

Warn’d by the Spirit's inward call, ,
Let me to righteousness Awake,

And pray that I may never fall;
Or give to sin or Satan place,
But walk in all thy righteous ways.
2.0 wouldst thon, Lord, thy servant guard

'Gainst every known or secret foe; A mind for all assaults prepared,

A dober vigilance bestow;
Ever apprived of danger nigh,
And when to fight and when to fly.
3 O never suffer me to sleep

Secure within the verge of hell;
But still my watchful spirit keep

In lowly awe and loving zeal;
And bless me with a godly fest,
And plant that guardian angel here.
4 Attended by that sacred dread,

And wise from 'evil to depart,
Let me front strength to strength proceed,

and rise to purity of heart : Through all the paths of duty move, From humble laith to perfect love. 730

Heavenly zeal.
KING of glory, thy rich grace

Our feeble thought surpasses far;
Yea, e'un our crimes, though numberless,

Less nuni'rous than thy mercies are, 2 Still, Lord, thy snving health display,

And arm our souls with benvenly real; So, fearless, shall we urge our way

Through all the powers of earth and hell

MY ;

Ten thousand foes arise ;
The bosts of sin are pressing hard

To draw thee from the skies.
2 0 watch, and fight, and pray;

The battle ne'er give o'er;
Renew it bolaly every day,

And help divine implore.
8 Ne'er think the vict'ry won,

Nor lay thine azmour down:
The work of faith will not be done,

Till thou obtain the crown.
4 Then persevere till death

Shall bring thee to thy God;
He'll take thee, at thy parting breath,

To his divine abode.

S. M.
The mind that was in Christ.
EQUIP me for the war

And teach my hands to fight;
My simple, upright heart prepare,

And guide my words aright.
2 Control my every thonght;

My whole of sin remove
Let all my works in thee, bo wronght;

Let all be wrought in love.
3 O arm me with the mind,

Meek Lamb, that was in thee;
And let my knowing zeal bę juin'd

With perfect charity,
4 With calin and temper'd zeal

Let me enforce thy call;
And vindicate thy gracious will,

Which offers life to all.

6 may I love like thee,

In all thy footsteps trend; Thou hatest all iniquity,

But nothing thou hast made. 60 may I learn the art,

With meekness to reprove;
To hate the sin with all my heart,

But still the sinner love. 733

1st P. M. 6 lines 89. The victory that overcometh the world.

[ocr errors][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

C. M.

Storm'd by a host of foes within,
Nor swift to pee, nor strong to' oppose,

Single against hell, earth, and sin:
Single, yet undismay'd, I am;
I dare believe in Jesus' name.
2 What though a thousand hosts engage

A thousand worlds, my soul to shake;
I have a shield shall quell their rage,

And drive the alien armies back
Portray'd, it bears a bleeding Lamb;
I dare believe in Jesus' name.

Faith sees the final triumph.

MI a soldier of the cross,

A foll'wer of the Lamb, -
And shall I fear to own his cause,

Or blush to speak his name!
2 Must I be carried to the skies

On Rowery beds of case;
While others fought to win the prize,

And sail'd through bloody seas! 3 Are there no fues for me to face!

Must I not stem the flood !
Is this vile world a friend to grace,

To help me on to God!

4 Since I must fight if I would reign,

Increase my courage, Lord ;
I'll bear the toil, endure the pain,

Supported by thy word.
5 Thy saints in all this glorious war

Shall conquer, though they die :
They see the triumph from afar,-

By faith they bring it nigh.
6 When that illustrious day shall rise,

And all thy armies shine
In robes of vict'ry through the skies,

The glory shall be thine.

S. M.
The violent take it by force.
O thy word

Inspire a feeble worm
To rush into thy kingdom, Lord,

And take it as by storm.
2 O may we all improve

The grace already given,
To seize the crown of perfect love,

And scale the mount of heaven.

C. M. Heavenly rest in anticipation. WHEN I can read my title clear

, I'll bid farewell to every fear,

And wipe my weeping eyes.
2 Should earth against my soul engage

And fiery darts be hurlid,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,

And face a frowning world.
3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,

Let storms of sorrow fall,
So I but safely rench my home,

My God, my heaven, my all.
