2 To that Jerusalem above, With singing I repair;

While in the flesh, my hope and love,
My heart and soul, are there.
There my exalted Saviour stands,
My merciful High Priest;

And still extends his wounded hands,
To take me to his breast.

FAR

The goodly land.

S. M.

VAR from these scenes of night,
Unbounded glories rise,

And realms of joy and pure delight,
Unknown to mortal eyes.

2 Fair land!-could mortal eyes
But half its charms explore,
How would our spirits long to rise,
And dwell on earth no more!
3 No cloud those regions know,-
Realms ever bright and fair;
For sin, the source of mortal wo,
Can never enter there.

40 may the prospect fire

Our hearts with ardent love,
Till wings of faith, and strong desire,
Bear every thought above."

5 Prepared, by grace divine,
For thy bright courts on high,
Lord, bid our spirits rise and join
The chorus of the sky.

The kingdoms are but one. JAPPY the souls to Jesus join'd, And saved by grace alone;

HAPPY

Walking in all his ways, they find
Their heaven on earth begun,

2 The church triumphant in thy love,
Their mighty joys we know:
They sing the Lamb in hymns above,
And we in hymns below.

3 Thee in thy glorious realm they praise,
And bow before thy throne;
We in the kingdom of thy grace:
The kingdoms are but one.

4 The holy to the holiest leads,
And thence our spirits rise;
For he that in thy statutes treads,
Shall meet thee in the skies.

THERE

The heavenly Canaan.

C. M.

is a land of pure delight,
Where saints immortal reign;
Infinite day excludes the night,
And pleasures banish pain.
2 There everlasting spring abides,
And never-with 'ring flowers:
Death, like a narrow sea, divides
This heavenly land from ours.

3 Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood
Stand dress'd in living green;

So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan roll'd between.

4 Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's stream, nor death's cold flood, Should fright us from the shore.

931

The promised land.

C. M.

ON Jordan's stormy banks I stand,

And cast a wishful eye

To Canaan's fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.

20 the transporting, rapturous scene,
That rises to my sight!

Sweet fields array'd in living green,
And rivers of delight.

3 There generous fruits that never fail,
On trees immortal grow;

There rock, and hill, and brook, and vale, With milk and honey flow.

4 O'er all those wide-extended plains
Shines one eternal day;

There God the Son forever reigns,
And scatters night away.

5 No chilling winds, or pois'nous breath,
Can reach that healthful shore;
Sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
Are felt and fear'd no more.

When shall I reach that happy place,
And be forever blest!

When shall I see my Father's face,
And in his bosom rest!

7 Fill'd with delight, my raptured soul
Would here no longer stay:

Though Jordan's waves around me roll,
Fearless I'd launch away.

The pilgrim's home.

S. M.

THILE through this world we roam,
From infancy to age,

Heaven is the Christian pilgrim's home,

His rest at every stage.

2 Thither his soul ascends,

Eternal joys to share;

There his adoring spirit bends,

While here he kneels in prayer

3 His freed affections rise,
To fix on things above,
Where all his hope of glory lies,-
Where all is perfect love.

4 There we our treasure place;
There let our hearts be found;
That still, where sin abounded, grace
May more and more abound.

5 Henceforth our converse be
With Christ before the throne;
Ere long we eye to eye shall see,
And know as we are known.

The saints in glory.

C. M.

IVE me the wings of faith to rise U Within the veil, and see

GW

The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be.

2 Once they were mourners here below,
And pour'd out cries and tears ;
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins, and doubts, and fears.

3 I ask them whence their vict'ry came: They, with united breath,

Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,-
Their triumph to his death.

4 They mark'd the footsteps that he trod; His zeal inspired their breast;

And, foll'wing their incarnate God,
Possess the promised rest.

5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise
For his own pattern given;

While the long cloud of witnesses
Show the same path to heaven.

JESU

7th P. M. 8 lines Is.

Partnership of the saints in light.
ESUS is our common Lord;
He our loving Saviour is ;
By his death to life restored,
Misery we exchange for bliss
Bliss to carnal minds unknown;"
O'tis more than tongue can tell,
Only to believers shown,-

Glorious and unspeakable.

;

2 Christ, our Brother and our Friend,
Shows us his eternal love:
Never shall our triumphs end,
Till we take our seats above.
Let us walk with him in white;
For our bridal day prepare;
For our partnership in light,-
For our glorious meeting there.

935

11th P. M. 76, 76, 77, 76. The better portion.

RISE, my soul, and stretch thy wings;

Thy better portion trace;

Rise from transitory things,

Tow'rd heaven, thy native place:
Sun, and moon, and stars decay;
Time shall soon this earth remove;
Rise, my soul, and haste away
To seats prepared above.

2 Rivers to the ocean run,

[ocr errors]

Nor stay in all their course;
Fire, ascending, seeks the sun;
Both speed them to their source:
So a soul that 's born of God,
Pants to view his glorious face;
Upward tends to his abode,
To rest in his embrace.
