God our Portion.

[Ps. 16. i. 2. His bids us make his glories known

1. SAVE me, O Lord, from every foe;
In thee my trust I place;
Though all the good that I can do
Can ne'er deserve thy grace.

2. Let heathens to their idols haste,
And worship wood or stone:
But my delightful lot is cast

Where the true God is known.

3. His hand provides my constant food,
He fills my daily cup;
Much am I pleased with present good,
And more rejoice in hope.

4. God is my portion, and my joy;
His counsels are my light;
He gives me sweet advice by day,
And gentle hints by night.

5. My soul would all her thoughts approve To his all-seeing eye;

Nor death nor hell my hope shall move
While such a friend is nigh.

God's Providence recounted.

Ps. 78. i.

430. 1. LET children hear the mighty deeds,

Which God performed of old, Which in our younger years we saw, And which our fathers told.

His works of power and grace;
And we'll convey his wonders down
Through every rising race.

3. Our lips shall tell them to our sons,
And they again to theirs,
That generations yet unborn
May teach them to their heirs.

4. Thus shall they learn, in God alone
Their hope securely stands:
That they may ne'er forget his works,
But practice his commands.

The Church.

1. Nor to the terrors of the Lord, The tempest, fire, and smoke; Not to the thunder of that word Which God on Sinai spoke ;

2. But we are come to Zion's hill, The city of our God;

[Hy. 429.

Where milder words declare his will,
And spread his love abroad.

3. Behold th' innumerable host
Of angels clothed in light;
Behold the spirits of the just,
Whose faith is turned to sight?

4. Behold the blest assembly there,

Whose names are writ in heaven!
And God, the Judge of all, declare
Their vilest sins forgiven.

5. The saints on earth, and all the dead
But one communion make;
All join in Christ, their living head,
And of his grace partake.

6. In such society as this

My weary soul would rest:

The man that dwells where Jesus is,
Must be forever blest.

Let God the Fa-ther and the Son, And Spirit be

1. I SET the Lord before my face, He bears my courage up;

[Ps. 16. v. 4. They journey on from strength to strength,

My heart and tongue their joy express,
My flesh shall rest in hope.

2. My spirit, Lord, thou wilt not leave
Where souls departed are;
Nor leave my body in the grave,
To see corruption there.

3. Thou wilt reveal the path of life,
And raise me to thy throne:
Thy courts immortal pleasure give;
Thy presence joys unknown.

437. Blessedness of the Devout. [Ps. 84. vii.
1. How lovely are thy dwellings, Lord,
From noise and trouble free!
How beautiful the sweet accord
Of souls that pray to thee!

2. Lord God of hosts, that reign'st on high! They are the truly blest,

Who only will on thee rely,

In thee alone will rest.

3. They pass refreshed the thirsty vale,
The dry and barren ground,
As through a fruitful, watery dale,
Where springs and showers abound.

With joy and gladsome cheer,

Till all before our God at length

In Zion's courts appear.

1. WHAT though no flowers the fig-tree clothe, Though vines their fruit deny,

The labor of the olive fail,

And fields no food supply;—

2. Though from the fold with sad surprise, My flock cut off I see;

Though famine pine in empty stalls,
Where herds were wont to be;-

8. Yet in the Lord will I be glad,
And glory in his love;

In him rejoice, who will the God
Of my salvation prove.

4. God is the treasure of my soul,

The source of lasting joy;

A joy, which want shall not impair,
Nor death itself destroy.

God of our fathers! be the God
Of their succeeding race.

Through each perplexing path of life
Our wandering footsteps guide:
Give us each day our daily bread,
And raiment fit provide.

4. O spread thy covering wings around,
Till all our wanderings cease,
And, at our Father's loved abode,
Our souls arrive in peace.

5. Such blessings from thy gracious hand
Our humble prayers implore;
And thou shalt be our chosen God
And portion evermore.

1. My soul, come, meditate the day,
And think how near it stands,
When thou must quit this house of clay
And fly to unknown lands.

2. Oh! could we die with those that die,
And place us in their stead;
Then would our spirits learn to fly,
And converse with the dead;—

3. Then should we see the saints above
In their own glorious forms,
And wonder why our souls should love
To dwell with mortal worms.

4. We should almost forsake our clay,
Before the summons come,
And pray, and wish our souls away
To their eternal home.

Praise for great Deliverance. [Ps. 34. iii. 1. THROUGH all the changing scenes of life, In trouble, and in joy, The praises of my God shall still My heart and tongue employ. 2. Of his deliverance I will boast, Till all, that are distressed, From my example comfort take, And charm their griefs to rest.

3. O magnify the Lord with me,

With me exalt his name;
When in distress to him I called,

He to my rescue came.

4. The hosts of God encamp around
The dwellings of the just;
Deliverance he affords to all,
Who on his succor trust.

5. O make but trial of his love;
Experience will decide

How blest are they, and only they,
Who in his truth confide.

6. Fear him, ye saints, and you will then
Have nothing else to fear;
Make you his service your delight,
He'll make your wants his care.
