Vain-ly through night's weary hours, . . Keep we watch, lest foes a larm;

Vain our bulwarks and our towers, But for God's pro-tecting arm.

9:4 24

Light of those whose drear-y dwelling Borders on the shades of death!

Rise on

us, thy-self reveal - ing,- Dis- si-pate the clouds beneath.

[blocks in formation]

1. LIGHT of those whose dreary dwelling Borders on the shades of death! Rise on us, thyself revealing,Dissipate the clouds beneath.

2. Thou, of heaven and earth Creator!
In our deepest darkness rise;
Scattering all the night of nature,
Pouring day upon our eyes.

3. Still we wait for thine appearing;
Life and joy thy beams impart,
Chasing all our fears, and cheering
Every meek, benighted heart.

4. Save us, in thy great compassion,
O thou mild, pacific Prince!
Give the knowledge of salvation,
Give the pardon of our sins.
6. By thine all sufficient merit,

Every burdened soul release;
Every weary, wandering spirit
Guide into thy perfect peace.

1. DREAD Jehovah! God of nations! From thy temple in the skies, Hear thy people's supplications, Now for their deliverance rise;

2. Lo! with deep contrition turning,
In thy holy place we bend,
Hear us, fasting, praying, mourning,
Hear us, spare us, and defend.

3. Though our sins, our hearts confounding,
Long and loud for vengeance call,
Thou hast mercy more abounding,
Jesus' blood can cleanse them all.

4. Let that mercy vail transgression; Let that blood our guilt efface: Save thy people from oppression, Save from spoil thy holy place.

Saviour, source of every bless-ing, Tune my heart to grate-ful lays;

Streams of mer-cy, never ceas-ing, Call for ceaseless songs of praise.

Peace to the dying Saint.

1. HAPPY soul, thy days are ended, All thy mourning days below: Go, by angel guards attended, To the sight of Jesus go!

Waiting to receive thy spirit,

Lo! the Saviour stands above, Shows the purchase of his merit,

Reaches out the crown of love.

[Hy. 477. 3. Light and peace at once deriving
From the hand of God most high,
In his glorious presence living,
They shall never-never die!

1. SEE the leaves around us falling,
Dry and withered to the ground:
Thus to thougthless mortals calling,
In a sad and solemn sound:-

2. "Youth, on length of days presuming,
Who the paths of pleasure tread,
View us, late in beauty, blooming,
Numbered now among the dead.
3. Though as yet no losses grieve you,
Gay with health and many a grace,
Let not cloudless skies deceive you;
Summer gives to autumn place.

4. Yearly in our course appearing,
Messengers of shortest stay,
Thus we preach, in mortal hearing,-
Ye, like us, shall pass away."

5. On the tree of life eternal,

O let all our hopes be laid!
This alone, forever vernal,

Bears a leaf that shall not fade.
