For thee I thirst, I pray, I mourn: When will thy smiling face return? Shall all my joys on earth remove; And God forever hide his love! 133. Acceptance through Christ. [Hy. 227. 3. Thy blood, O Jesus! thine alone, 1. As when the weary traveler gains The height of some o'erlooking hill, His heart revives, if, cross the plains, He eyes his home though distant still;2. So when the christian pilgrim views, By faith, his mansion in the skies; With Jesus in the realms of day; 1. THE God of love will sure indulge 2. Yet not one anxious, murmuring thought, Our feeble flesh and heart may fail; 4. Parent and husband, guard and guide, 1. In sleep's serene oblivion laid, I safely passed the silent night; Again I see the breaking shade, I drink again the morning light. 2. New-born, I bless the waking hour, [Hy. 689. Praise him a-bove, ye heaven-ly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. 1. SHOW pity, Lord: O Lord, forgive; 2. My crimes are great, but don't surpass 3. O wash my soul from every sin, And make my guilty conscience clean; 4. My lips with shame my sins confess 5. Should sudden vengeance seize my breath, 1. FROM deep distress and troubled thoughts, To thee, my God, I raised my cries: If thou severely mark our faults, No flesh can stand before thine eyes. 2. But thou hast built thy throne of grace, Free to dispense thy pardons there, That sinners may approach thy face, And hope and love, as well as fear. 3. As the benighted pilgrims wait, And wish and long for breaking day, When will my God his face display? 4. My trust is fixed upon thy word, Nor shall I trust thy word in vain; Let mourning souls address the Lord, And find relief from all their pain. 5. Great is his love, and large his grace, Through the redemption of his Son; He turns our feet from sinful ways, And pardons what our hands have done. 141. Public Worship. 1. AWAY from every mortal care, [Hy. 16. Away from earth, our souls retreat; We leave this worthless world afar, Aud wait and worship near thy seat. 1. How sweetly flowed the gospel's sound From lips of gentleness and grace, When listening thousands gathered round, And joy and reverence filled the place! 2. From heaven he came, of heaven he spoke, To heaven he led his followers' way; Dark clouds of gloomy night he broke, Unvailing an immortal day. 3. "Come, wanderers, to my Father's home; Pillars of earthly pride, decay: [lly. 262. 146. 1. WHY will ye waste on trifling cares 2. Shall God invite you from above? 1. SAVIOUR! When night involves the skies, My soul, adoring, turns to thee; Thee, self-abased in mortal guise, And wrapt in shades of death for me. 2. On thee my waking raptures dwell, When crimson gleams the east adorn; Thee, victor of the grave and hell, Thee, source of life's eternal morn. 3. When noon her throne in light arrays, To thee my soul triumphant springs; Thee, throned in glory's endless blaze, Thee, Lord of lords, and King of kings! 4. O'er earth when shades of evening steal, To death and thee my thoughts I give; To death, whose power I soon must feel; To thee, with whom I trust to live. To God the Fa-ther, God the Son, And God the Spirit, Three in One, Be hon-or, praise, and glory given, By all on earth, and all in heaven. 147. Love to the Saints. [Ps. 16. ii. 3. His soul shall live secure on earth, 1. PRESERVE me, Lord, in time of need! 2. Oft hath my heart and tongue confessed, 8. Yet, Lord, thy saints on earth may reap These are the choicest friends I know. 4. Let others choose the sons of mirth, I love the men of heavenly birth, 148. The Merciful blessed. With secret blessings on his head, When drought, and pestilence, and dearth, Around him multiply their dead. 4. Or if he languish on his couch, God will pronounce his sins forgiven; [Ps. 41. ii. Trust him, ye saints, in all your ways, Pour out your hearts before his face: When helpers fail, and foes invade, God is our all-sufficient aid. 8. False are the men of high degree, The baser sort are vanity; 1. BLEST is the man whose soul can move, And melt with pity to the poor; Whose heart, by sympathizing love, Feels what his fellow saints endure:- 2. Who still contrives for their relief More good than his own hands can do: Laid in the balance both appear 4. Make not increasing gold your trust, |
