161. “We, being many, are one bread." 1 Cor. x. 17.

C. M.

1 HOW happy are Thy servants, Lord, Who thus remember Thee!

What tongue can tell our sweet accord,
Our perfect harmony!

2 Who Thy mysterious supper share,
Here at Thy table fed,
Many, and yet but one we are,
One undivided bread.

3 One with the living bread divine,
Which now by faith we eat,

Our hearts, and minds, and spirits join,
And all in Jesus meet.

4 So dear the tie where souls agree
In Jesus' dying love;

Then only can it closer be,
When all are joined above,

BAPTISM.

162."Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost." Matt. xxviii. 19. L. M.

1 COME, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost! Honour the means enjoined by Thee; Make good our apostolic boast,

And own Thy glorious ministry.

2 We now Thy promised presence claim : Sent to disciple all mankind,

Sent to baptize into Thy name,
We now Thy promised presence find.
3 Father! in these reveal Thy Son,
In these for whom we seek Thy face:
The hidden mystery make known,
The inward, pure, baptizing grace.
4 Jesus! with us Thou always art:
Establish now the sacred sign.
The gift unspeakable impart,
And bless Thine ordinance divine.

5 Come, Holy Spirit, from on high,
Baptizer of our spirits Thou!
The sacramental seal apply,
And witness with the water now.
6 Pour forth Thy energy divine,
And sprinkle the atoning blood.
May Father, Son, and Spirit join
To seal each child, a child of God.

163. "Baptized into his death." Rom. vi. 3. C. M.

1 JESUS! we lift our souls to Thee:
Thy powerful Spirit breathe;
And let this little infant be
Baptized into Thy death.

2 Oh let Thine unction on [him] rest;
Thy grace [his] soul renew;
And write within [his] tender breast,
Thy name and nature too.

3 If Thou shouldst quickly end [his] days, [His] place with Thee prepare; Or, if Thou lengthen out [his] race, Continue still Thy care.

4 Thy faithful servant may [he] prove,
Girded with truth divine;

A sharer in Thy dying love,
A follower of Thine.

5 Lord, plant us all into Thy death,
That we Thy life may prove;
Partakers of Thy cross beneath,
And of Thy crown above.

164. "By the washing of regeneration." Tit. iii. 5. P. M.

1 FATHER, Son, and Holy Ghost!
In solemn power come down.
Save this child, by Nature lost,
And take [him] for Thine own:

Hear us, sinful worms of earth,
While on [his] behalf we pray:
Grant [him] that celestial birth,
No water can convey,

2 Vain is every outward rite,
Unless Thy grace be given:
Nothing but Thy life and light
Can form a soul for heaven.
Jesus! thou wast once a child.

Bid this infant come to Thee.
Thine alone may [he] be sealed,
To all eternity.

3 Let Thy promised inward grace
Accompany the sign:

On [his] new-born soul impress
The glorious name divine.
Father! now Thy love reveal:
Jesus! now Thy mind impart :
Holy Ghost! renew, and dwell
For ever in [his] heart.

165. "His righteousness (is) unto children's children, to

to such as keep his covenant." Psal. ciii. 17, 18. C. M. double.

1 O THOU whose covenant is sure
To all who fear Thy name;

Whose mercies age on age endure,
Eternally the same:

Thou art our fathers' God; we plead
That title: we are Thine.

Pour down Thy Spirit on our seed,
And sanctify our line.

2 In Thee our fathers put their trust;
Thy ways they humbly trod :
Honoured and sacred is their dust
And still they live to God.
Heirs to their faith, their hope, their prayers,
We the same path pursue.
Entail the blessing to our heirs.
Lord! shew Thy promise true.

166. "We will go with our young,

with our sons, ana

with our daughters." Exod. x. 9. 7's.

1 GRACIOUS Lord, our children see!
By Thy mercy we are free:
But shall these, alas! remain
Subjects still of Satan's reign?
Israel's young ones, when of old
Pharaoh threatened to withhold;
Then Thy messenger said, “No;
Let the children also go."

2 When the angel of the Lord,
Drawing forth his dreadful sword,
Slew, with an avenging hand,
All the first-born of the land;
Then Thy people's doors he passed,
Where the bloody sign was placed.
Hear us, now upon our knees,

Plead the blood of Christ for these!

167. "I have no greater joy than to hear that

walk in truth." 3 John 4. S. M.

GREAT God! now condescend
To bless our rising race:

my

Soon may their willing spirits bend,
The subjects of Thy grace.
