407." Glorious things are spoken of thee, O city of God."

Psalm lxxxvii. 3. 8's & 7s.

1 GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken, Zion, city of our God!

He whose word cannot be broken,
Formed thee for His own abode.
On the Rock of Ages founded,
What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
Thou mayst smile at all thy foes.

2 Blest inhabitants of Zion,

Washed in the Redeemer's blood!
Jesus, whom their souls rely on,
Makes them kings and priests to God.
'Tis His love His people raises

Over self to reign as kings;
And as priests, His solemn praises
Each for a thank-offering brings.

3 Saviour, if of Zion's city

I, through grace, a member am;
Let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in Thy name.
Fading is the worldling's pleasure,
All his boasted pomp and show:
Solid joys and lasting treasure,
None but Zion's children know.

408. "Seek the Lord, and his strength: seek his face

evermore." Psalm cv. 4. 7's.

1 OH give thanks unto the Lord :
All His wondrous deeds proclaim.
Every tongue His praise record:
Every heart adore His name.

2 Seek the Lord; His grace implore;
On His love your trust repose.
Seek His presence evermore:

There lay down your cares and woes.

3 Ye that make the Lord your choice,
Call to mind His works of love :
Tell His wonders, and rejoice
In your King who reigns above.

4 Thou, O Lord! art true and just.
Thou wilt crown with sure success
All the waiting souls that trust
In Thy love and faithfulness.

409. "Thy word is a lamp unto my feet." Psa. exix. 105.

C. M.

1 HOW precious is the book divine,
By inspiration given !

Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heaven.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts,
In this dark vale of tears:

Life, light, and joy it still imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

3 This lamp, through all the tedious night
Of life, shall guide our way;
Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day.

410.

"The entrance of thy words giveth light."
Psalm cxix. 130. C. M.

1 THE Spirit breathes upon the word,
And brings the truth to sight:
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun:

It gives a light to every age;
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand that gave it, still supplies
The gracious light and heat.
His truths upon the nations rise:
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be Thine
For such a bright display,
As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of Him I love;
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

411. “ I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help." Psalm cxxi.

1 TO the hills I lift mine eyes, The everlasting hills;

P. M.

Thence I draw Divine supplies;
My soul new vigour fills.
Faithful is His promised word;
Help, while yet I ask, is given;
Given by Him, the sovereign Lord,

Who made both earth and heaven.

2 Not the powers of earth or hell
Thy Guardian can surprise :
Careless slumber cannot steal
On His all-seeing eyes.
He is Israel's sure defence;
Israel all His care shall prove;
Kept by watchful providence
And ever-waking love.

3 Thee, on evil's scorching day,
The sun shall never smite;
Thee, the moon's malignant ray
Shall never blast by night.
Safe from known or secret foes,
Free from sin and Satan's thrall,
God, when flesh, earth, hell oppose,
Shall keep thee safe from all.

412." Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem."

Psalm cxxii. 2. 8's & 6's.

1 THE festal morn, my God! is come, That calls me to Thy hallowed dome, Thy presence to adore:

My feet the summons shall attend,
With willing steps Thy courts ascend,
And tread the sacred floor.

2 What joy while thus I view the day,
That warns my thirsting soul away!
What transports fill my breast!
For, lo! my great Redeemer's power
Unfolds the everlasting door,
And leads me to His rest!

3 E'en now, to my expecting eyes,
The heaven-built towers of Salem rise:
E'en now, with glad survey,

I view her mansions, that contain
The angelic forms, an awful train,
And shine with cloudless day.

4 Hither, from earth's remotest end,
Lo! the redeemed of God ascend,
Their tribute hither bring:

Here, crowned with everlasting joy,
In hymns of praise their tongues employ,
And hail the Immortal King.

413.

"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into
the house of the Lord." Psalm cxxii.

GLAD was my heart to hear
My old companions say,

Come, in the house of God appear,
For 'tis a holy day.

2 Our willing feet shall stand
Within the temple-door;

S.M.

While young and old, in many a band, Shall throng the sacred floor.
