337.

"To preach deliverance to the captives."
Luke iv. 18.

C. M.

1 THE Saviour of mankind is come;
The Saviour promised long.

Let every heart prepare a throne,
voice a song.

And every

2 He comes the prisoners to unbind,
Who Satan's captives lay;

And on the eye-balls of the blind
To pour celestial day.

3 He comes to bind the broken heart,
The bleeding soul to cure;
And heavenly treasures to impart
To all the humble poor.

4 Our glad hosannas, Prince of Peace!
Thy welcome shall proclaim;

Nor shall Thy ransomed church e'er cease
To glory in Thy name.

338. "And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding." Luke ii. 47. O. M.

1 ABASHED be all the boast of age:
Be hoary learning dumb.
Expounder of the mystic page,
Behold an Infant come!

2 O Wisdom! whose unfading power
Beside the Eternal stood,

To frame, in nature's earliest hour,
The land, the sky, the flood;

3 Yet didst Thou not disdain awhile
An infant-form to wear,

To bless Thy mother with a smile,
And lisp Thy filial

prayer.

4 But, in Thy Father's own abode,
With Israel's elders round,
Conversing high with Israel's God,
Thy chiefest joy was found.

5 So may our youth adore Thy name!
And, Saviour! deign to bless,

With fostering grace, the timid flame.
Of early holiness.

“Hosanna to the Son of David!" Matt. xxi. 9,

L. M.

1 WHAT are those soul-reviving strains, Which echo thus from Salem's plains? What anthems loud, and louder still, Sweetly resound from Zion's hill?

2 LO! 'tis an infant chorus sings, Hosanna to the King of kings.

The Saviour comes! and babes proclaim
Salvation, sent in Jesus' name.

3 Nor these alone their voice shall raise,
For we will join this song of praise.
Still Israel's children forward press,
To hail the Lord their Righteousness.
4 Messiah's name shall joy impart
Alike to Jew and Gentile heart.
He bled for us, He bled for you;
And we will sing Hosanna too.

5 Proclaim hosannas loud and clear:
See David's Son and Lord appear!
Glory and praise on earth be given;
Hosanna in the highest heaven.

"He took them up in his arms, put his hands upon them, and blessed them."

Mark x. 16.

C. M.

1 WHEN Jesus left the throne of God,
He chose an humble birth.
A man of grief, like us He trod
A lonely path on earth.

2 Like Him, may we be found below,
In wisdom's paths of peace;
Like Him, in grace and knowledge grow,
As years and strength increase.

3 Sweet were His words, and kind His look, When mothers round Him pressed : Their infants in His arms He took,

And on His bosom blessed.

4 When Jesus into Salem rode,
The children sang around;

For joy they plucked the palms, and
strowed

Their garments on the ground.

5 Hosanna, our glad voices raise;
Hosanna to our King.

Could we forget our Saviour's praise,
The stones themselves would sing.

"If any man serve me, let him follow me."
John xii. 26. L. M.

1 HOW shall I follow Him I serve?
How shall I copy Him I love?
Nor from those blessed footsteps swerve,
Which lead me to His seat above?

2 Privations, sorrows, bitter scorn,
The life of toil, the mean abode,
The faithless kiss, the crown of thorn,--
Are these the consecrated road?

3 'Twas thus He suffered, though a Son,
Foreknowing, choosing, feeling all;
Until the perfect work was done,
And drunk the bitter cup of gall.

4 Lord! should my path through suffering lie,
Forbid it I should e'er repine.
Still let me turn to Calvary,

Nor heed my griefs, remembering Thine. 5 Oh, let me think how Thou didst leave Úntasted every pure delight,

To fast, to faint, to watch, to grieve,
The toilsome day, the homeless night :-

6 To faint, to grieve, to die for me!

Thou camest not Thyself to please.
And, dear as earthly comforts be,

Shall I not love Thee more than these?

7 Yes, I would count them all but loss, To gain the notice of Thine eye. Flesh shrinks and trembles at the cross, But Thou canst give the victory.

342." And the fellowship of his sufferings." Phil. iii. 10. 7's.

1 GO to dark Gethsemane,

Ye that feel the Tempter's power.
Your Redeemer's conflict see:
Watch with Him one bitter hour.
Turn not from His griefs away:
Learn of Jesus Christ to pray.
2 Follow to the judgment-hall:
View the Lord of life arraigned.
Oh the wormwood and the gall!
Oh the pangs His soul sustained!
Shun not suffering, shame, or loss:
Learn of Him to bear the cross.

3 Calvary's mournful mountain climb;
There, adoring at His feet,
Mark that miracle of time,-
God's own sacrifice complete.
"It is finished;" hear Him cry :
Learn of Jesus Christ to die.

4 Early hasten to the tomb,

Where they laid His breathless clay.
All is solitude and gloom :--
Who hath taken Him away?

Christ is risen ;-He seeks the skies.
Saviour! teach us so to rise.

343.

"He hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows." Isaiah liii. 4. C. M.

1 BEHOLD the Saviour of mankind
Nailed to the shameful tree!

How vast the love that Him inclined
To bleed and die for me!
