5 All praise to Thee who safe hast kept, And hast refreshed me while I slept. Grant, Lord! when I from death shall I may of endless life partake.

[wake,

6 Lord! I my vows to Thee renew.
Disperse my sins as morning dew.
Guard my first springs of thought and
And with Thyself my spirit fill.

7 Direct, control, suggest, this day,
All I design, or do, or say;

[will,

That all my powers, with all their might, In Thy sole glory may unite.

8 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow: Praise Him, all creatures here below: Praise Him above, ye heavenly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

502. "I will both lay me down in peace and sleep.”
Psalm iv. 8. L. M.

1 GLORY* to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light.
Keep me, Oh keep me, King of kings!
Beneath Thy own Almighty wings.

2 Forgive me, Lord! for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done;
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.

3 Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed:
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the judgment-day.

Originally written, "All praise to Thee, my God, this night."|

4 Oh may my

soul on Thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close;
Sleep that may me more vigorous make,
To serve my God when I awake.

5 When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply:
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.

6 Oh, when shall I in endless day,
For ever chase dark sleep away,
And hymns, with the supernal choir,
Incessant sing, and never tire!

7 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow :
Praise Him, all creatures here below :
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

503.

"At midnight I will. . . . give thanks unto thee.”
Psalm cxix. 62. L. M.

1 MY God! now I from sleep awake,
The sole possession of me take :
From midnight terrors me secure,
And guard my heart from thoughts impure.

2 Oh may I always ready stand,
With my lamp burning in my hand!
May I in sight of heaven rejoice,
Whene'er I hear the Bridegroom's voice.

3 All praise to Thee, in light arrayed,
Who light Thy dwelling-place hast made :
A boundless ocean of bright beams
From Thy all-glorious Godhead streams.

4 Blest Jesus! Thou, on heaven intent,
Whole nights hast in devotion spent:
But I, frail creature, soon am tired,
And all my zeal is soon expired.

5 Shine on me, Lord! new life impart ;
Fresh ardours kindle in my heart.
One ray of Thy all-quickening light
Dispels the sloth and clouds of night.
6 Lord! lest the tempter me surprise,
Watch over Thine own sacrifice :
All loose, all idle thoughts cast out,
And make my very dreams devout.
7 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow:
Praise Him, all creatures here below :
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host:
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

504.

"I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the Lord sustained me." Psalm iii. 5. C. M.

1 LORD of my life! Oh may Thy praise Employ my noblest powers,

Whose goodness lengthens out my days,
And fills the circling hours.

2 Preserved by Thine almighty arm,
I passed the shades of night,
Serene and safe from every harm,
And see returning light.

3 While many spent the night in sighs,
And restless pains and woes,

In gentle sleep I closed my eyes,
And undisturbed repose.

4 When sleep, death's semblance, o'er me And I unconscious lay,

[spread,

Thy watchful care was round my bed,
To guard my feeble clay.

5 Oh let the same almighty care

My waking hours attend;
From every danger, every snare,
My heedless steps defend.

6 Smile on my minutes as they roll,
And guide my future days;
And let Thy goodness fill my soul
With gratitude and praise.

505.

"When I awake, I am still with thee."
Psalm cxxxix. 18. L. M.

1 IN sleep's serene oblivion laid,

I safely passed the silent night: Again I see the breaking shade, I drink again the morning light. 2 New-born, I bless the waking hour; Once more with awe rejoice to be: My conscious soul resumes her power, And springs, my guardian God, to Thee. 3 Oh guide me through the various maze, My doubtful feet are doomed to tread; And spread Thy shield's protecting blaze, Where dangers press around my head. 4 A deeper shade shall soon impend,

A deeper sleep mine eyes oppress; Yet then Thy strength shall still defend, Thy goodness still delight to bless.

5 That deeper shade shall break away, That deeper sleep shall leave mine

eyes:

Thy light shall give eternal day;
Thy love, the rapture of the skies!

506.

"Whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.”
1 Cor. x. 31. L. M.

1 FORTH in Thy name, O Lord! I
My daily labour to pursue;
Thee, only Thee, resolved to know,
In all I think, or speak, or do.

go,

2 The task Thy wisdom has assigned,
Oh let me cheerfully fulfil;
In all Thy works Thy presence find,
And prove Thine acceptable will.

3 Thee may I set at my right hand,
Whose eyes my inmost substance see;
And labour on at Thy command,
And offer all my works to Thee.

4 Give me to bear Thy easy yoke,
And every moment watch and pray;
And still to things eternal look,
And hasten to Thy glorious day;

5 For Thee delightfully employ,

Whate'er Thy bounteous grace hath
given;

And run my even course with joy,
And closely walk with Thee to heaven.
