2 If aught should tempt my soul to stray
From heavenly wisdom's narrow way,
To flee the good I would pursue,
Or do the sin I would not do;
Still He who felt temptation's power,
Shall guard me in that dangerous hour.

[ocr errors]

3 If wounded love my bosom swell,
Deceived by those I prized too well,
He shall His pitying aid bestow,
Who felt on earth severer wo;
At once betrayed, denied, or fled,
By those that shared His daily bread.

4 When vexing thoughts within me rise,
And, sore dismayed, my spirit dies,
Yet He, who once vouchsafed to bear
The sickening anguish of despair,
Shall sweetly soothe, shall gently dry,
The throbbing heart, the streaming eye.

5 When sorrowing o'er some stone I bend,
Which covers all that was a friend,
And from his hand, his voice, his smile,
Divides me for a little while,

My Saviour marks the tears I shed;
For "Jesus wept" o'er Lazarus dead.

6 And oh, when I have safely passed
Through every conflict but the last,
Still, Lord! unchanging, watch beside
My dying bed, for Thou hast died :
Then point to realms of cloudless day,
And wipe the latest tear away.

549. "And he shall set the sheep on his right hand."

Matt. xxv. 33. 8's and 6's.

! WHEN Thou, my righteous Judge, shalt

come,

To fetch Thy ransomed people home,
Shall I among them stand?
Shall such a worthless worm as I,
Who sometimes am afraid to die,
Be found at Thy right hand?

2 Blest Saviour! grant it by Thy grace:
Be Thou my only hiding-place,
In this the accepted day.

Thy pardoning voice, oh, let me hear,
To still my unbelieving fear;

Nor let me fall, I pray.

3 Among Thy saints let me be found, Whene'er the archangel's trump shall And see Thy smiling face:

[sound,

Then with what rapture shall I sing,

While heaven's resounding mansions ring
With shouts of sovereign grace!

550.

"And to be with Christ, which is far better."
Phil. i. 23. 7's.

1 TO Jesus, the crown of my hope,
My soul is in haste to be gone.
Oh, bear me, ye cherubim, up,
And waft me away to His throne.
2 My Saviour, whom absent I love,
Whom, not having seen, I adore!
Whose name is exalted above

All glory, dominion, and power!

3 Dissolve Thou the bond that detains i
My soul from her portion in Thee
And strike off the adamant chains,
And make me eternally free.
4 When that happy era begins,
Arrayed in Thy beauty I'll shine;
Nor pierce any more by my sins,
The bosom on which I recline.

LNVOCATION OF THE HOLY SPIRIT.

551.

"He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire." Matt. iii. 11.

C. M.

1 OH, breathe upon this languid frame,
Spirit of heavenly might!
Baptize me with the vital flame
Of purity and light.

2 Descend like heaven's self-kindled fire
On my heart's sacrifice,

Till self in flames of love expire,
In clouds of incense rise.

3 Spring up within this flinty heart,
Well-spring of life divine!

Health to my feeble pulse impart :
Light, out of darkness, shine.

4 O Light and Power! O Life and Love! Of every good the Source!

Send me sweet succour from above,
To speed me on my course.

5 Instruct me, rule me, guide my feet;
My every thought control;
My Teacher, Patron, Paraclete!
Possess and guard my soul.

6 Spirit of Christ, sent forth from Him, Yet uncreate, Divine!

Thine are the songs of Seraphim:
All human praise be Thine.

DOXOLOGY.

552. "My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord."

Psalm cxlv. 21. 8's & 7's.

PRAISE the God of all creation:
Praise the Father's boundless love.
Praise the Lamb, our Expiation,
Priest and King enthroned above.
Praise the Fountain of Salvation,
Him by whom our spirits live.
Undivided adoration

To the One Jehovah give.

MARRIAGE.

553. "And both Jesus was called, and his disciples, to the marriage." John ii. 2.

C. M.

1 SINCE Jesus freely did appear
To grace a marriage feast,

O Lord! we ask Thy presence here:
Be Thou our glorious guest.

2 Upon the bridal pair look down,
Who now have plighted hands:
Their union with Thy favour crown,
And bless their nuptial bands.

3 With gifts of grace their hearts endow, Of all rich dowries best:

Their substance bless, and peace bestow,
To sweeten all the rest.

4 In purest love their souls unite,
That they, with Christian care,
May make domestic burdens light,
By taking mutual share.

5 On every soul assembled here,

Oh, make Thy face to shine.

Thy goodness more our hearts can cheer, Than richest food or wine.
