lead thee to mourn for sin. Sin should be always thy affliction, and holiness thy delight. Thou art then happy indeed. The consolation of Christ, as thy righteousness, strength, and salvation, are thine. Thou shalt feel their reviving and rejoicing power, even in this world, and possess them in the fulness of joy in the next. He himself has said, "Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted." O that I could always keep this gracious promise in view! particularly in the seasons of affliction, when I most need such consolations. But while we encourage this truly spiritual concern for sin, let us not indulge a melancholy gloom. The bright hopes the gospel gives us of present confort, and everlasting joy at last, should inspire us with cheerful gratitude to the divine goodness; and, when we can rejoice in nothing else, let us rejoice in the assurance Christ has given us, that though mourners now, we shall be comforted in his due time, to mourn no more. HYMN. Blest are the humble souls that see Blest are the men of broken heart, Blest are the meek, who stand afar grace, Blest are the souls that thirst for Blest are the men whose bowels move, Blest are the whose hearts are clean, pure, From the defiling powers of sin ; With endless pleasure they shall see A God of spotless purity. Blest are the men of peaceful life, Blest are the suff'rers who partake PRAYER For Thursday Morning. O Lord our God, we desire with humility and holy fear, to draw near to the footstool of thy throne, to give thee the glory due to thy name. On the morning of this new day we direct our prayer unto thee and look up. Accept our united thankgivings and praises for the mercies of the past night-we have been refreshed by sleep, and permitted to rise in health and peace. May it be our sincere desire and purpose of heart to begin, and spend, and close this day with thee. Arm our minds and hearts against all the temptations to which we may be this day exposed.-May no temptation meet us but what is common to man; and with every temptation do thou make a way for our escape, that we may be able to endure. Assist usinthe faithful and zealous discharge of all the duties incumbent upon us as the disciples of thy Son. While we embrace and profess the doctrines of Christ may we drink into his spirit: may that mind which was in him be also in us.-As he was in this world, may we also aim to be, humble, and holy, and heavenly-minded, keeping ourselves unspotted from the world; give us grace to attend to the duties of the several relations we sustain-as masters and servants, as parents and children may we abide in our callings with God, and be found fruitful in all things. Guide us, O our God, through all the trials and difficulties of this day. O that thou wouldest keep us from evil that it may not grieve us, and whatever evils may fall to our lot in this life, may we have the good hope of passing through all those tribulations into thy heavenly kingdom. Thou God of all the families of the earth, bless this family with all spiritual blessings, and may every member of it be a member of Christ, a child of God, and an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven; and gather us all at last with thy saints in glory everlasting. These mercies we implore in the name, and through the mediation and intercession of thy son. Jesus Christ, our Redeemer and Saviour. Amen. HYMN. "Where are the mourners," saith the Lord, Come, make my name your trust and stay. "No works, nor duties of your own, << The softest couch that nature knows, "Ye sons of pride that kindle coals. hands ; "This is your portion at my PRAYER For Thursday Evening. "O Lord our God, thy name is most excellent in all the earth. Thou hast set thy glory above the heavens," and thou art wor thy to be celebrated with everlasting praises of men and angels: "for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created." Thy hands, O Lord, have made and fashioned us, and thou hast breathed into our nostrils the breath of life; yea, thou upholdest our souls in life. Thou hast formed us for thyself, that we should shew forth thy praise. But, O Lord our God, we have not brought thee that glory for which |
