Hymn 178, S. M.

1

Give unto the Lord glory and strength.
1 Chron. xvi. 28.

G

LORY to God on high;

Our peace is made with heaven;
The Son of God came down to die,
That we might be forgiven.

2 His precious blood was shed,
His body bruis'd for sin;
Remember this in eating bread,
And this in drinking wine.

3 Approach his royal board,

In his rich garments clad;
Join every tongue to praise the Lord;
And every heart be glad.

4 The Father gives the Son:

The Son his flesh and blood:
The Spirit applies, and faith puts on
The righteousness of God.

KEEPING THE SABBATH-DAY. Remember the Sabbath-day to keep it holyI was in the Spirit on the Lord's day. Exod. xx. 8. Rev. i. 10.

Hymn 179. L. M.

This is the day which the Lord hath made: we will rejoice and be glad in it. Psalm exviii. 24.

HE day of Christ, the day of God,

THE

We humbly hope with joy to see,

Wash'd in the sanctifying blood
Of an expiring Deity.

2 He did for us his life resign!
There is no other God but one;
For all the plenitude divine
Resides in his eterual Son.

3 Spotless, sincere, without offence, O may we to his day remain! Who trust the blood of Christ, to cleanse Our souls from every sinful stain. 4 Lord, we believe the promise sure; The purchas'd Comforter impart! Apply thy blood to make us pure, To keep us pure in life and heart! 5 Then let us see that day supreme,

When none thy Godhead shall deny, Thy sovereign majesty blaspheme, Ör count thee less than the Most Highs. 6 When all who in their God believe, Who hear thy last appearing love, Shall thy consummate joy receive, And see thy glorious face above.

Hymu 180. S. M.

Upon the first day of the week very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices. Luke xxiv. 1.

WE WELCOME, sweet day of rest,

That saw the Lord arise:

Welcome to this reviving breast,

And these rejoicing eyes!

rejoicing

*

2 The King himself comes near,
And feasts his saints to-day:
Here we may sit, and see him here,
And love, and praise, and pray.
3 One day in such a place,

Where thou, my God, art seen,
Is sweeter than ten thousand days,
That's spent in guilt and sin.

4 My willing soul would stay
In such a frame as this,
And sit and sing herself away
To everlasting bliss.

Hymn 181. L. M.

That keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. Isa. Ivi. 2. 1 AR from my thoughts, vain world be gone, Let my religious hours alone;

FA

Fain would my eyes my Saviour see;
I wait a visit, Lord, from thee.

2 My heart grows warm with holy fire,
And kindles with a pure desire:
Come, O my Jesus, from above,

And feed my soul with heavenly love.
3 Haste then, but with a smiling face,
And spread the table of thy grace:
Bring down a taste of truth divine,
And cheer my heart with sacred wine.
4 Blest Jesus, what delicions fare!
How sweet thy entertainments are !
Never did angels taste above
Redeeming grace and dying love.

Hymn 182. P. M.

Surely the Lord is in this place. Gen. xxviii. 16:

1LO! God is here! let us adore,

And own how dreadful is this place! Let all within us feel his power, And silent bow before his face! Who know his power, his grace who prove, Serve him with awe, with rev'rence love. 2 Lo! God is here! him day and night The united choirs of angels sing: To him, enthron'd above all height,

Heaven's hosts their noblest praises bring; Disdain not, Lord, our meaner song, Who praise thee with a stamm'ring tongue. 3 Gladly the toys of earth we leave,

Wealth, pleasure, fame, for thee alone;
To thee our will, soul, flesh, we give :

O take! O seal them for thine own!
Thou art the God, thou art the Lord;
Be thou by all thy works ador'd!
4 Being of beings! may our praise

Thy courts with grateful fragrance fill;
Still may we stand before thy face,
Still hear aud do thy sov'reign will;
To thee may all our thoughts arise,
A ceaseless, pleasing sacrifice.

5 As flowers their op'ning leaves display,
And glad drink in the solar fire;
So may we catch thy every ray,
So may thy influence us inspire;
Thou beam of the eternal beam!
Thou purging fire, thou quick'ning flame.

Hymn 183. C. M.

Now the Lord is that Spirit : and where the Spiril of the Lord is, there is liberty. 2 Cor. iii. 17,

1 M Be in thy Spirit, Lord,

I throughout this day of thine,

Spirit of humble fear divine,
That trembles at thy word.
2 Spirit of faith, my heart to raise,
And fix on things above;
Spirit of sacrifice and praise,
Of holiness and love.

Hymn 184. L. M.

And call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable. Isa. lviii. 13.

1

SWEET is the work, my God, my King,

To praise thy name, give thanks and sing, To show thy love by morning light,

And talk of all thy truth by night.
2 Sweet is the day of sacred rest,
No mortal care shall seize my breast,
O may my heart in tune be found,
Like David's harp of solemn sound!
3 When grace has purified my beart,
Then shall I share a glorious part;
And fresh supplies of joy are shed,
Like holy oil to cheer my head.

↑ Then shall I see, and hear, and know,
All I desir'd or wish'd below:

And every power find sweet employ,
In that eternal world of Joy.
