IN order to understand properly the present situation in Italy it is of importance to distinguish Fascism, regarded as the creed of a political party and having a prescribed mandate to accomplish certain definite and immediate ends, from Fascism regarded as the basis of a revolutionary movement, and representing a certain order of ideas. The Fascists as a political party were fortunate in finding at the psychological moment a leader of extraordinary energy and political ability. They came into being to restore in Italy the authority and efficiency of government and to crush the antinational forces at work in the country-forces represented by Socialism, Christian Democracy and Freemasonry, which had been allowed to grow and prosper under the weak and unprincipled rule of preceding governments.
