said ;

They even spake against God, and

“ Will God be able to spread a table in the wilderness?

“ When he sinote the rock, bebold! the waters burst forth, and the streains flowed: but can he also give bread ? can he provide flesh for his people ?"

When, therefore, JEHOVAH heard this, he was exceedingly wroth : and the fire burnt fiercely against Jacob, yea, and anger arose against Israel :

Because they believed not in GOD ; neither trusted in his saving power.

Nevertheless, he commanded the clouds above to part asunder, and opened the doors of heaven.

He showered down manna upon them to eat, and gave them bread from heaven :

So men did eat the food of angels, and he sent them provisions, more than sufficient.

He caused the east-wind in the heavens to cease to blow; and, by his power, he brought in the south-west-wind;

And he showered upon them flesh as

though trough it had been dust; and winged fowl as the sand of the sea;

And they fell in the midst of their camp: even round about their habitations.

Then they did eat, and were thoroughly satisfied; for he gave them their desire.

But they ceased not from their gluttonous craving ; nay, even while their food was in their mouths, the wrath of GOD arose against them, and slew them in the midst of their indulgences, and smote the chosen men of Israel.

Notwithstanding all this, they sinned still more, and believed not his wonderful works :

Therefore he consumed their days in vanity, and their years in trouble.

While he was destroying them, they sought him; and returned, and supplicated

And remembered that GOD was their defence; that the most high God was their saviour.

But still they only flattered him with their mouths, and dissembled with their tongues;

For their heart was not fixed on him; neither were they steady in his covcnant.

Nevertheless he, being merciful, forgave their iniquity, and did not destroy them ; but frequently turned away

his wrath, and would not suffer bis whole displeasure to arise :

For he remembered that they were fiesh; a breath that passeth away and returneth not.

Thus did they rebel against him in the wilderness, and provoke bin in the desert:

Again and again, they put god to the proof; and set bounds to the holy one of Israel.

They called not to mind his power, nor the day when he rescued them from affliction :

42. When he wrought his miracles in Egypt, and his wonders in the plain of Zoan : 43

When he turned their rivers and their streams into blood, so that they could not drink of them : 44 When he sent among them the mos

cheto-fly to devour them; and the frog, that it might destroy them :

And he gave their fruit to the caterpillar, and their labour to the locust :

When he cut off their vines with hailstones, and their fig-trees with the frost:

And he gave up their cattle to the hail

, and their flocks to flashes of lightning:

When he sent upon them the fierccness of his displeasure, anger, wrath and indignation; the ministers of evil :

And he levelled a way for his anger ; not sparing their persons from death, but giving up

up their life to the pestilence : 50 IVhen he smote every first-born in Egypt; even the primne of their strength in the tents of Ham.

But he made his own people go forth like sheep, and led them in the wilderness like a flock:

He conducted them in safety, without fear; while the sea over-whelined their enemies :

And brought them to his holy land, even to the mountain which his right-hand had acquired.

And he drove out the nations before them, dividing their land among them for an inheritance, and making the tribes of Israel his people to dwell in their tents.

Yet they tried and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies :

They fell back, and proved false like their fathers; they turned back like a bow when it shooteth.

They provoked him to anger with their high-places, and moved him to jealousy with their graved images.

God heard this, and was wroth; and was greatly disgusted with Israel ;

So that he forsook his dielling in Shiloh, even the tabernacle in which he dwelt among men :

Nay, he delivered his power into captivity, and his glory into the hands of his enemies.
