I've searched the sacred volume thro', I love awhile to steal away
Its truth divine to learn ; From every cumbering care,
And oh, enrapturing to my view, , And spend the hours of setting day,
What glories I discern In humble, grateful prayer;
Farewell to doubting, fears and pains, I love to think on mercies past,
Those tyrants of the mind And future good implore,
The truth has burst their galling chains, And all my cares and sorrows cast
They can no longer bind. On him whom I adore.
I'll trust the promise of thy word, I love by faith to take a view
Till that triumphant hour, Of brighter scenes in heaven;
When every creature shall be heard And feel that they my strength renew,
Ascribing praise and power; While here by tempests driven :
When all the ransomed, happy throng, Thus, when life's toilsome day is o'er,
To praise the great I AM, May its departing ray
Shall join their voices in the song Be calm as this impressive hour,
Of Moses and the Lamb. And lead to endless day.
Then let its persecuting foes
This precious faith revile;
Securely still will I repose
In my Redeemer's smile.
HYMN 568. Thorning, p. 74.
The glorious universe around,
The heavens with all their train,
Sun, moon, and stars, are firmly bound
My weary soul in peace shall rest In one mysterious chain.
On this transporting theme; - - i erals, tre
For all our kindred shall be blest God in creation thus displays
His wisdom and his might; While all his works with all his ways, I'll trust the promise of thy word, In harmony unite.
o HYMN 566. Dempster, p. 207. To". fellowship of o is ab My soul has often stretch'd its wings e saints below, and saints above,
O'er nature's varied frame, T heir Miss and glory find. And search'd the rich tho'hidden springs, Here in their weary pilgrimage,
Whence all her bounties came; The Saviour is their song;
One truth from every scene it brought, -
The truth, that God is love. HYMN 569. Willis, p. 77.
Though here the cloud may darkly lead, I jog the Wisdom ordained
And there the fire may move, The sun to rule the day;
Inscribed on each I still can read The moon shines full at his command,
The truth, that God is love. And all the stars obey.
But when, from this poor dust relieved, Lord, how thy wonders are displayed,
I tread the courts divine, Where'er I turn mine eye
And, to my Father's house received, If I survey the ground I tread,
On Jesus' breast recline; Orgaze upon the sky |
My soul in that ecstatic hour, In every plant and flower below,
Shall higher transports prove, Thy glory is made known ; , ;
And taste, in all its bliss and power, And clouds arise, and tempests blow,
The truth, that God is love. By order from thy throne.
With life and joy supreme.
