As the intention of the foregoing Treatise is, through the grace of God, to render communicating a spiritual service, it will be necessary to warn those into whose hands it may fall, to be peculiarly careful not to rest upon the ordinance itself, or the exactness of their preparation according to any form which is prescribed to them, but to look chiefly to their profiting by it; to observe whether their hearts are drawn nearer to God in Christ; and in the memorial of his death, their expectation of his coming again more enlivened. Formality is the most dangerous of all states; and outward religion, where the experimental knowledge of Christ is wanting, removes persons farther from the kingdom of God, than outward vices; the one puffing up the pride of vain man, whilst the other lays him open to conviction of his danger. Let it not be imagined that this is spoken to encourage outward vices : God forbid! No, but as an awful warning to those, who, resting on the form of godliness, deny the power of it. May you be not alınost, but altogether Christians. And if the great Master of the feast bless these words to your illumination, instruction, edification, consolation, or sanctification, his be the praise to him alone praise is due. : FINIS.
