PREFACE.

A JOURNAL like our own ought not to require any preface. Its contents ought to speak for themselves. Long-established

custom, however, has required such an annual introduction, and we never addressed ourselves to the task of writing it with greater satisfaction or stronger hopes. The circulation of "THE ENGLISH JOURNAL OF EDUCATION" has been gradually but surely increasing during the whole of the past year. The moderation of its tone, the practical rather than polemical bearing of its articles, have procured for it many new friends, and alienated very few old ones. Its conductors solicit the continued aid of their valuable correspondents, and while they invite the co-operation of their numerous subscribers in extending the sale, and thereby promoting the efficiency of the periodical, they pledge themselves that they will use every effort to render it more instructive and interesting to teachers than it has ever been before. Among the articles in contemplation, is a series of bible lessons, adapted to the use of elementary schools, and papers on agricultural chemistry and the best methods of teaching it to farming boys.

Jan. 28, 1850.
