Ahab Warned of God's Vengeance

BORN 1853.

As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.-1. Kings, 17, 1.

"LIJAH'S appearance came at a great crisis in

Israel's history. The disaster and desolation of

the kingdom's earlier days had been temporarily stayed. Of the pretenders to the throne who fought one another in Zimri's day, one, the general Omri, had finally established himself firmly upon the throne, and restored Israel to peace and power. He reigned twelve years, built a splendid new capital, Samaria, and was succeeded by his son, King Ahab. The lives of this father and son furnish a striking parallel to those of David and Solomon. Omri won his kingdom from out a civil war, founded a great new capital, and defeated his enemies. Ahab ruled in peace and wealth, was a mighty builder, erected for himself a palace all of ivory, wedded a foreign wife and followed her in her idolatry.

This wife was Jezebel, a princess of Sidon, where Baal was worshipped. She was a resolute devotee of her own land's faith, and set herself deliberately to exterminate the worship of God in Israel. All His priests were slain. The unhappy people of Israel seemed only to have escaped the physical desolation of the earlier period, to meet moral and spiritual death. Then suddenly Elijah appeared before Ahab and Jezebel, crying to these two who were denying God, that, “As the Lord God of Israel liveth,”

there should be no rain from heaven until

Israel returned to worship Him.
