OF THE HOLY TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD AND GOD AND SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST. (AUG. 6TH.)

The righteous shall wait for me, until Thou recompense me.

Out of depths have I cried unto Thee, O LORD: LORD, hear my voice. O let Thine Ears be attentive unto the voice of my prayer.

If Thou, O LORD, wilt mark transgressions, O LORD, who shall stand? for with Thee is propitiation.

Hymn of Cosmas the Monk.

I. Before Thy Cross, O LORD, the Mountain imitated Heaven, the Cloud became as an enriched Tabernacle. Thou wast Transfigured, and wast borne-witness to by the FATHER, in the presence of Peter with James and John, as those about to be also together-with Thee in the time of Thy being delivered up, in order that beholding Thy won lers, they might not be timid at Thy sufferings: to worship which, in peace deem us worthy, through Thy great mercy.

For Thy Name's sake have I waited for Thee, O LORD; my soul hath waited for Thy Word: my soul hath hoped in the LORD.

II. Before Thy Cross, O LORD, &c. As immediately above.

From the morning watch until night; from the morning watch, let Israel hope in the LORD.

III. Before Thy Cross, O LORD, taking the Disciples into a high mountain, and being Transfigured before them, (hence Love-to-men, from thence Authority,) they clearly beheld the Rays of Power, shewing forth purposely the Brightness of the Resurrection: of which, O God, in peace deem us also worthy, as Merciful, and Lover-of-men.

For with the LORD is mercy, and with Him is plentiful redemption : and He shall redeem Israel from all his transgressions.

IV. Before Thy Cross, O LORD, taking, &c. As immediately above.
Praise the LORD, all ye nations; praise Him, all ye peoples.

V. Having the leaders of the Disciples in a high mountain, the Saviour was Transfigured, gloriously shining-forth because they being plainly adorned with the height of virtues, were also made worthy of the Divine Glory. But there appeared, talking together with CHRIST, Moses and Elias, because of living and of dead He hath Lordship; the ancients also, through Law and Prophets saying that He is GOD; to Whom the Voice of the FATHER also, from the bright cloud, bore witness, saying: Hear Him, Who through the Cross despoileth Hades, and to the dead giveth everlasting life.

For His mercy hath been abundant towards us; and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever.

VI. The mountain which was once dark and smoking, is now honourable and worthy, in which Thy Feet stood, O LORD: for Thy terrible Transfiguration, veiled in mystery before the ages, was in the last days manifested to Peter, John, and James: who, bearing not the rays of Thy

Countenance, and the brightness of Thy raiment, fell upon their face to the earth; who also, continuing in ecstacy, with wonder beheld Moses and Elias talking together with Thee of the things about to happen unto Thee. And a Voice from the FATHER bare witness, saying: This is My Beloved Son, in Whom I am well-pleased: hear Him, Who hath also given to the world the great mercy.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the SON, and to the Holy GHOST:
Both now, and ever,

and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Hymn of Anatolius.

A Prototype of Thy Resusrection, O CHRIST the GOD, was that given to Thy three Disciples, Peter and James and John, gone up into Thabor. But the Thaborian mountain was covered with the Light of Thee, the Transfigured Saviour. Thy Disciples, O WORD, bowed themselves to the foundation of the earth, not bearing to look upon the Form which may not be seen. Angels do service in fear and trembling; the Heavens are terrified; the earth shakes: beholding upon earth the Glory of the LORD. Deacon. Wisdom. Stand up. As at page 14.

OF THE REPOSE OF OUR MOST-HOLY GLORIOUS MISTRESS, THE THEOTOKOS AND EVER-VIRGIN MARY. (AUG. 15TH.)

I. O paradoxic wonder! the fountain of Life is placed in a tomb, and the ladder to Heaven has come to the grave. Be glad, O Gethsemane, the Holy Grove of the Theotokos. Cry-aloud, ye faithful servants of the Chief-captain Gabriel: () Full-of-grace, Hail! with thee is the LORD, Who giveth to the world, through thee, the great mercy.

Praise the LORD, all ye nations; praise Him, all ye peoples.

II. Bless me, what mysteries are thine, O Pure-one! Of the highest throne thou art shewn-forth the Mistress, and from earth to Heaven art translated to-day. Well-befitteth thy Glory, beaming-forth Divinelybright Graces. Virgins, together with the Mother of the KING, are raised to the Highest. O Full-of-grace, Hail! with thee is the LORD, Who giveth to the world, through thee, the great mercy.

For His mercy hath been abundant towards us; and the truth of the LORD endureth for ever.

III. Thy Repose, Dominions, Thrones, Principalities, Lordships, Powers, Cherubim, and the terified Seraphim Glorify. The earth-born throughout the world exult over thy Divine Glory. Kings, together with Archangels and Angels, fall-down and sing: O Full-of-grace, Hail! with thee is the LORD, Who giveth to the world, through thee, the great mercy.
