the Wonderworker; of the Holy, glorious great-Martyr, George the Trophy-bearer; of the Holy- (of the Day,) of whom also we celebrate the memory; of the Holy and just Parents-of-God, Joakeim and Anna; and of all Thy Saints: make it that our prayer be acceptable ; grant us the forgiveness of our stumblings; shelter us in the sheltering of Thy Wings; drive-away from us every enemy and adversary; give us peace in our life. O LORD, have mercy upon us, and upon Thy world, and save our souls, as Good, and Lover-of-men.

Choir. Amene.

¶Re-entering the Church, and standing before the Royal Doors, then follow:

[Aposticha of the Holy Pentecost. *

I. The nations, O LORD, knowing not the power of Thine All-Holy SPIRIT which was in the Apostles, deemed the change of tongues Intoxication; but we, by them established, say unceasingly: Take not Thy Holy SPIRIT from us, we pray, O Lover-of-men.

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew an upright spirit within me.

II. O LORD, the inspiration of the Holy SPIRIT filling Thine Apostles, prepared them to speak with other tongues; wherefore the paradox was deemed Intoxication by the unbelievers, but by the faithful, Introducer of salvation of which illumination make us also worthy, we pray, O Lover-of-men.

Cast me not away from Thy Presence; and take not Thy Holy SPIRIT from me.

III. O Heavenly King, O Comforter, the SPIRIT of the Truth, Who art everywhere present, and fillest everything; Who art the Treasury of the Good-things, and Supplier-of-the-means of life: come, and tabernacle in us, and cleanse us from all impurity, and save, O Good, our souls.

* Aposticha of the Birth of Christ.
Hymn of Germanus.

I. A great and paradoxic wonder is complete to-day! A Virgin brings forth, yet with womb incorrupt; the WORD is Incarnate, yet not divided from the FATHER. Angels with Shepherds Glorify, and we with them together cry-aloud: Glory to GOD in the Highest, and on earth peace.

The LORD said to my LORD: Sit Thou at My Right-Hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool of Thy Feet.

II. To-day the Virgin brings forth the Maker of all. Edem brings a Cave, and a Star discloses CHRIST the Sun to those who were in darkness. With gifts Magi worshipped, enlightened by faith; and Shepherds beheld the wonder, of Angels hymning and saying: Glory to GoD in the Highest. From a Womb before the morning-star have I Begotten Thee.

Hymn of Anatolius.

III. When JESUS the LORD was Born in Bethlehem of Judea, Magi coming from the East worshipped the Incarnate GOD, and opening their treasures freely, offered precious Gifts: Gold assayed, as to King of the ages; and Frankincense, as to God of all; but to the Immortal, Myrrh, as to the three days dead. O all ye nations, come, let us worship Him Who is Born to save our souls.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST: Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene. Tongues were once confounded through the boldness of the towermaker; but now tongues have been made wise through the glory of the Divineknowledge. GOD punished there the impious by the stumbling; CHRIST here enlightens the fishermen by the SPIRIT. Then, speechlessness was enforced for penalty; now harmony of speech hath been made new, for the salvation of our souls.]

Returning each to his original place, the Reader saith:
Now dismiss Thy servant in peace, &c. As at page 17.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST.
Hymn of John the Monk.

Rejoice, O Jerusalem, and keep festival, all ye that love Sion. To-day is loosed the lingering chain of Adam's condemnation; Paradise is open to us, the serpent being overcome: for her, whom he before deceived, he hath now seen become Mother of the Maker. Oh depth of riches, and wisdom, and knowledge of GOD! She, who brought in death to all flesh, who was the instrument of sin, is become the first-fruit of salvation to the whole world, through the Theotokos: for a Babe is born of her, the GOD All-Merciful; and through the birth He seals Virginity, through swaddling-clothes looses the cords of sin; and through infancy He heals the labour pangs of Eve. Therefore let all the creation dance and leap, for CHRIST hath come to call it back, and to save our souls. Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Hymn of Anatolius.

In a Cave didst Thou dwell, O CHRIST the GOD; a Manger held Thee, but Shepherds and Magi worshipped. Then was fulfilled what the Prophets proclaimed; and the Angelic Powers wondered, crying-aloud and saying: Glory to Thy condescension, O Only Lover-of-men.

¶ Returning each to his original place, the Reader saith:

I Believe in One GOD, &c. As at page 22: excepting when the Eve of Dec. 25th (or of Jan. 6th) occurs on Saturday or Sunday, in which case, the Liturgy of St. Basil being omitted from the Vespers, THE LITE is said in its usual place, as on the Eve of Pentecost.

APOLYTIKIA AND

THEOTOKIA OF THE RESURRECTION.

At pages 17 and 45;

and for Apolytikia only, at pages 102, 129, 136, 141, and 147.

TONE 2.
Apolytikion.

When Thou, the Living, the Immortal, wentest-down into death, Thou didst slay Hades by the lightning of the Divinity; but when Thou didst also raise the dead from beneath the earth, all the Powers of the Heavens shouted: O CHRIST our GOD, the Life-giver, Glory to Thee.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST.
Apolytikion of the Day: for which, see APPENDIX E. *

Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Theotokion.

Thy mysteries, O Theotokos, are all above thought, are all supremely glorious; sealed with purity, and guarded with virginity, Mother without deceit, thou art known to have borne the True GOD. Him supplicate, that our souls may be saved.

TONE 3.
Apolytikion.

Let the Heavens be glad, let those on earth exult, for the LORD hath made strength with His Arm; He hath trodden down death by Death, being the First-begotten of the dead; He hath delivered us from the belly of Hades; and hath granted to the world the great mercy. Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST.

Apolytikion of the Day.

Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Theotokion.

We hymn thee, O Virgin Theotokos, the mediatrix of the salvation of our race, for thy SON and our GoD took Flesh from thee; and having endured the suffering of the Cross, hath redeemed us from corruption, as Lover-of-men.

*If there is no " Apolytikion of the Day" provided, that " of the Resurrection" repeated in this place.

TONE 4.
Apolytikion.

The female-disciples of the LORD, learning from the Angel the cheerful proclamation of the Resurrection, and the throwing-off the ancestral sentence, to the Apostles boastingly said: Death is spoiled; CHRIST the GOD is Risen, giving to the world the great mercy.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the SON, and to the Holy GHOST.

¶ Apolytikion of the Day.

Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Theotokion.

The mystery hidden from the ages, and to the Angels unknown, thro' thee, O Theotokos, is made manifest upon the earth; GOD in His fulness is united to Flesh, and of free-will hath borne the Cross for us through the Resurrection of Him, the First-formed, save our souls from death.

TONE 5.
Apolytikion.

Let us, faithful-ones, hymn and worship the WORD, Co-unoriginate with FATHER and SPIRIT, Who was born from the Virgin for our salvation: for that He was well-pleased in His Flesh to ascend the Cross, and suffer death, and raise the departed by His glorious Resurrection. Glory to the FATHER, and to the SON, and to the Holy GHOST.

Both now,

¶ Apolytikion of the Day.

and ever, and to the ages of the ages.

Theotokion.

Amene.

Hail, the impenetrable Gate of the LORD. Hail, O wall and shelter of those who run to thee. Hail, O calm haven, and undefiled-one. Thou, who didst bring-forth in Flesh thy Maker and GOD, intercede that we come not short, who hymn and worship thy Child-bearing.

TONE 6.
Apolytikion.

Angelic Powers were upon Thy Tomb, and the guards became as dead; and Mary stood in the Grave, seeking Thy spotless Body. Thou didst spoil Hades, not having been tempted by it; Thou didst meet the Virgin, bestowing Life. Thou Who didst Rise from the dead, Glory to Thee, O Lord.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST.

¶ Apolytikion of the Day.

Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Theotokion.

Thou, Who art the Blessed-One, calledst Thy Mother; wentest to the Passion of Thine Own free-will; laidest-hold of the Cross; searchedst-out willingly Adam, saying to the Angels: Rejoice with Me, for I have found the lost drachma. O Thou All-wise Steward, Glory to Thee.

TONE 7.
Apolytikion.

Folded in death by Thy Cross, Thou openedst Paradise to the Thief; the Ointment-bearers change their wailing, and to the Apostles proclaim the injunction: That CHRIST the GOD is Risen, granting to the world the great mercy.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST.

¶ Apolytikion of the Day.

Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Theotokion.

As our Resurrection treasure, we have confidence in thee, O all-hymned, led-up from the pit and depth of stumblings. For thou savedst those who were responsible for sin, by bringing-forth the Salvation: who before bringing-forth wast a Virgin, and in bringing-forth wast a Virgin, and after bringing-forth remainest still a Virgin.

TONE 8.
Apolytikion.

From on high came-down He Whose tenderness-of-heart accepted the three-days Grave, in order by the sufferings to set us free. Thou Who art our Life and Resurrection, Glory to Thee, O LORD.

Glory to the FATHER, and to the Son, and to the Holy GHOST.

¶ Apolytikion of the Day.

Both now, and ever, and to the ages of the ages. Amene.

Theotokion.

Thou, Who for us wast Born from a Virgin, and enduredst Crucifixion, O Good; Who by Death hast spoiled death, and didst, as GoD, manifest the Resurrection: disregard not those whom Thou hast formed with Thy Hand; manifest Thy Love-to-men, O Merciful; receive her who bore Thee, the Theotokos, interceding for us; and save, O our Saviour, the despairing people.

NOTE. That the above enumeration of the Tones follows the Slavonian order, which differs slightly from the Greek, and still more from the Gregorian, as may be seen by the annexed Table:
