O let the raptures of the skies
Kindle in our cold hearts below!
Come, condescending Spirit, come,

And make our fouls thy conftant home!

1.

OME, Holy Spirit, come ; Let thy bright beams arise; Difpel the forrow from our minds, The darkness from our eyes.

II.

Cheer our defponding hearts
With vifitations fweet;

Give us to lie, with humble hope,
At our Redeemer's feet.

III.

Revive our drooping faith,

Our doubts and fears remove; And kindle in our breafts the flame Of never-dying love.

IV.

Convince us of our fin,

Then lead to Jefu's blood;

And to our wond'ring view reveal
The fecret love of God.

V.

Shew us the finners' Friend,
That rules the courts of blifs,
The Lord of hofts, the mighty God,
Th' eternal Prince of Peace.

VI.

'Tis thine to cleanse the heart,
T'illuminate the foul;

To pour fresh life on ev'ry part,
And new create the whole.

The fame. P. M.

[ocr errors]

I.

OLY GHOST, infpire our praises,
Touch our hearts, and tune our tongues:

Laud we now thy name, O Jefus,

Heav'n fhall echo with our fongs.

II.

Ev'ry ftate, howe'er diftreffing,
Shall be profit in the end;
Ev'ry ordinance a bleffing;

Ev'ry providence a friend.

III.

Bleffed Lord, be Thou our teacher,
Helper, counsellor, and guide;
Speak the promife through the preacher,
And the hearing ear provide.

IV.

Vain is learning, parts, or merit,
Vain the native pow'rs of man;
Jefus! fend thy Holy Spirit,
So difplay the Gospel plan.

XXXV. The fame. C. M.

I.

OME, Holy Ghoft, our hearts inspire,
us thine influence prove;
Let

COM

Source of the old prophetic fire,
Fountain of life and love.

II.

Come, Holy Ghoft, for mov'd by Thee
Thy prophets wrote and spoke;
Unlock the truth (Thyfelf the key!)

Unfeal the facred book:

III.

Water with heav'nly dew thy word,
In this appointed hour;

Attend it with thy prefence, Lord,
And bid it come with pow'r:

IV.

Open the hearts of them that hear,
To make the Saviour room;
Now let us find redemption near,
Let faith by hearing come.

XXXVI. For a Bleffing on the Gospel. P. M.

I.

OURCE of light and pow'r divine,
Deign upon thy truth to fhine;

Lord, behold thy fervant ftands;
Lo! to Thee he lifts his hands:

Satisfy his foul's defire;

Touch his lip with holy fire.

II.

Softly fall the healing found,

Like the dew-drop on the ground;
Drooping plants fhall foon revive;
Faith in bud begin to live,
And enlarg'd shall soon disclose
Beauties of the full-blown rofe.

III.

In thy pure and holy way,

Heights, and greater heights difplay;
So that whilft our race we run,

We may
Nor the past contemplate more
Urgent ftill on what's before.

think it but begun;

IV.

Ope thy treasures! fo fhall fall
Unction sweet on him, on all,
Till by odours scatter'd round,
Chrift Himfelf be trac'd and found;
Then shall ev'ry raptur'd heart,
Rich in peace, and joy depart.

XXXVII. For a Bleffing on Public Worfhip. 75.

I.

LORD, we come before Thee now,

At thy feet we humbly bow;

Oh! do not our fuit difdain;
Shall we seek thee, Lord, in vain?

II.

Lord, on Thee our fouls depend,
In compaffion now defcend;
