But, through thy free goodness, my spirits revive,

And He that firft made me, ftill keeps me

alive.

III.

Whene'er I mistake, thy kind mercy begins To melt me, and then I can mourn for my fins;

And led by the Spirit to Jefus's blood,
My forrows are dry'd, and my ftrength is

renew'd.

IV.

Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Diffolv'd by thy fun-fhine, I fall to the ground, And weep to the praife of the mercy I found.

V.

Thy mercy is endless, most tender, and free; No finner need doubt, fince 'tis given to me: No merit will buy it, nor fears stop its course; Good works are the fruits of its freeness and force.

VI.

Thy mercy in Jefus exempts me from hell; Of mercy I'll fing, of thy mercy I'll tell;

'Twas Jefus my friend, when he hung on the

tree,

That open'd the channel of mercy for me.

VII.

Great Father of mercies thy goodness I own, And the cov❜nant-love of thy crucify'd Son; All praise to the Spirit, whose whisper divine Seals mercy, and pardon, and righteousness, mine.

LXXI. The pardoning God. P. M.

I.

GREAT God of wonders! all thy ways

Are matchlefs, God-like, and divine!

But the fair glories of thy grace

More God-like and unrivall'd shine;
Who is a pard'ning God like Thee,
Or who has grace fo rich and free?

II.

Crimes of fuch horror to forgive,
Such guilty daring worms to fpare,
This is thy grand prerogative,

And none fhall in the honour share.

Who is a pard'ning God like Thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?

III.

Angels and men, refign your claim
To pity, mercy, love, and grace,
Thefe glories crown Jehovah's name
With an incomparable blaze.
Who is a pard'ning God like Thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?

[ocr errors]

In wonder loft, with trembling joy,
We take the pardon of our God:
Pardon for crimes of deepest dye,

Pardon that flows through Jesus' blood,
Who is a pard'ning God like Thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?

V.

O may this ftrange this matchlefs grace,
This God-like miracle of love,

Fill the wide earth with grateful praife,
And all th' angelic hofts above!
Who is a pard'ning God like Thee?
Or who has grace fo rich and free?

LXXII. Happiness only in Chrift. 75.

G

I.

ROUND, O ground me on the Lamb, Other Saviours I difclaim: Fix my heart on him to stay, Fix it, Lord, without delay.

II.

Empty is created good,

I want more fubftantial food:
All is vanity befide
Jefus, and him crucify'd.

III.

In thy prefence may I dwell,
Subject to thy holy will;
Show'r on me thy pow'r divine,
Make and keep me wholly thine.

IV.

While I traverse here beneath,

Thy kind influence on me breathe;
Reconcil'd to me appear,

And thy righteousness bring near.

V.

Grant me ftill in grace to grow,
While a ftranger here below;
Let me by thy Spirit move,
Till I reach the realms of love,

LXXIII. Meeknefs and Humility. 75.

I.

LORD, if Thou thy grace impart,

Poor in fpirit, meek in heart,

I fhall as my Master be,
Rooted in humility.

II.

From the time that this I know,
Nothing would I feek below,
Aim at nothing great or high,
Lowly both in heart and eye.

III.

Simple, teachable, and mild,
Free from malice as a child,
Pleas'd with all the Lord provides,
Wean'd from all the world befides.

IV.

Father, fix my foul on Thee,
Ev'ry evil let me flee,

Nothing want beneath, above,
Happy in thy precious love.

V.

O! that all may feek and find
Ev'ry good in Jesus join'd!
Him let Ifrael ftill adore,
Truft him, praise him evermore.
