in a clean and sweet Randing pet, or loop of pewter, if not of purer metal. 20 Canon.

4 And note, that every parishioner shall communicate at the leaft three times in the year, of which Easter to be orie.

In every parish church and chapel where facraments are to be administred within this realm, the holy communion shall be min stred by the parson, vicar, or minister, so often, and at such times, as every parishioner may communicate, at the leaft thrice in the year (whereof the feast of Easter to be one) accor. ding as they are appointed by the book of common prayer. Every minifter, as oftashe adminiftreth the communion, shall first receive that sacrament himself; and shalldeliver both the bread and the wine to every communicant severally. 21 CANON.

The cup of the Lord is not to be denied to the lay people: for both the parts of the Lord's facrament, by Chrift's ordinance and commandment, ought to be ministred to all christian men alike. 30 ARTICLE of religion.

Whereas every lay person is bound to receive the holy communion thrice every year, and many notwithstanding do not receive that facrament once in a year ; we do require every minister to give avarning to his parishioners publickly in the church at morning prayer, the Sunday before every time of his adminidring that holy facrament, for their better PREPA'R ATION of themselves: which said warning we enjoin the faid parishioners to accept and obey, under the penalty and danger of the law. 22 CANON.

The ministers, church-wardens, queft-men, and aliitants of every parih-church and chapel, shall yearly within forty days after Eafter exhibit to the bishop, or his chancellor, the names and firnames of the parishioners, as well men as women, which, being of the age of fixteen years, received not the communion at Easer before. 112 CANON,

The church-wardens or quest-men, and their alliitants, shall mark, as well as the minister, whether all and every of the parishioners come so often every year to the holy communion, as the laws and our confitutions do require; and whether any ftrangers come often and commonly from other parishes to their church; and Mall shew the minister of them, left perhaps they be admitted to the Lord's cable amongst others, which they Mall forbid; and remit such home to their own parilk churches and

ministers, ministers, there to receive the communion with the rest of their own neighbours. 28 CANON.

Whereas it is ordained in the office for the administration of the Lord's Supper, that the communicants should receive the same kneeling: (which order is wellmeant for a signification of our humble and grateful acknowledgement of the benefits of Christ therein given to all worthy receivers, and for the avoiding of such profanation and disorder in the holy communion, as might otherwise enfue.) Yet, left the same kneeling should by any persons, either out of ignorance and infirmity, or out of malice and obftinacy, be mifconfirued and depraved: It is hire declared, that thereby no adoration is intended, or ought to be done either unto the sacramental bread and wine, there bodily received, or unto any corporal presente of Christ's natural fles and blood. For the facramental bread and wine remain fill in their very natural substances, and therefore may not be adored (for that were idolatry, to be abhorred of all faithful christians.) And in the natural body and blood of our Sariour Christ are in heaven, and not bere ; it being against the truth of Christ's natural body, to be at one time in more places than one.

The supper of the Lord is not only sign of the love that christians ought to have among themselve one to another; but rather it is a facrament of our redemption by Chrif's death : insomuch that to such as rightly, worthily, and with faith receive the same, the bread which we break, is a partaking of the body of Christ; and likewise the cup of bleliing, is a partaking of the blood of Christ. Transubfiantiation (or the change of the substance of bread and wine) in the supper of the Lord, cannot be proved by holy writ; but it is reprgnint to the plain words of scripture, overthroweth the nature of a facrament; and hath given occasion to many superstitions. The body of Chri't is given, takea and eaten in the supper anly after an beavenly and spiritual manner. And the mean whereby the body of Christ is received and eaten in the supper, is faith, 28 ARTICLE of Religion.

The wicked, and such as be void of a lively faith, although they do carnally and viGbly press with their teeth the sacrament of the body and blood of Chrift; yet in no wise are they partakers of Christ, but rather, to their condemnation, do eat and drink the sign or sacrament of so great a thing. 29 ARTICLE of Religion.
