poorer members of the congregations; and the Editor, being anxious that all classes of the community should be able to take part in the devotional exercise of singing the praises of the Almighty in the public Congregation, resolved to issue the Hymns without the music, at a price which should place the publication within the means of the humblest classes.

Whatever may be the merits or the demerits of the Selection, the Editor can safely say that he has undertaken his task conscientiously, unbiassed by any partyspirit, and uninfluenced by sectarianism. His sole object, throughout the undertaking, has been to collect from the writings of accredited authors, such Hymns as are adapted for public singing in Churches-such hymns, in fact, as fitly express what ought to be the feelings of every sincere and devout worshipper.

CHURCH WALK,

ULVERSTON.

HYMNS.

HYMN 1.

Again the day returns of sacred rest,

Which when He made the world Jehovah blest;
When like His own, He bade our labours cease,
And all be piety and all be peace.

Let us devote this consecrated day,
To learn His will, and all we learn, obey;
In pure religion's hallow'd duties share,
And join in penitence, and join in pray'r.
So shall the God of mercy pleas'd receive,
That only tribute man hath pow'r to give;
So shall He hear while fervently we raise,
Our choral harmony, in hymns of praise.
Father of Heav'n! in whom our hopes confide,
Whose pow'r protects us and whose precepts
guide;

In life our guardian, and in death our friend,
Glory supreme be Thine, till time shall end.

HYMN 2.

All hail the great Immanuel's Name !

Ye angels, prostrate fall:

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all.

B

Crown Him ye martyrs of our God,
Who from His altar call:

Extol the stem of Jesse's rod,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Ye Saints, redeem'd of Adam's race,
Ye ransom'd from the fall,
Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Ye realms of every tongue and name,
Ye nations great and small,
Your mighty Saviour's praise proclaim,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Oh! that with yonder sacred throng,
We at his feet may fall,

Join in the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all.

HYMN 3.

Almighty Father! rob'd with light,
Seated upon Thy heav'nly throne,
O teach our hearts to feel aright,
And tongues to say "Thy will be done."
In all Thy just and righteous ways
Thy grace and goodness may we own,
For ev'ry mercy yield our praise,

And say, O Lord, "Thy will be done." And when oppress'd with grief we lie, When brighter scenes are fled and gone, Still may our souls submissive cry,

Father in Heav'n, "Thy will be done."

HYMN 4.

Almighty Maker of my frame,
Teach me the measure of my days;
Teach me to know how frail I am,
And spend the remnant to Thy praise.
My days are shorter than a span,
A little point my life appears;
How frail at best is dying man !

How vain are all his hopes and fears. Oh! be a nobler portion mine!

My God! I bow before Thy throne;
Earth's fleeting treasures I resign,
And fix my hope on Thee alone.

HYMN 5.

Angels from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,

Now proclaim Messiah's birth; [ship,
Come and worship-Come and wor-
Worship Christ the new-born King.
Shepherds, in the field abiding,
Watching o'er your flock by night;
God with man is now residing;
Yonder shines the infant light;

[ship,

Come and worship- Come and wor-
Worship Christ the new-born King.

Saints, before the altar bending,
Waiting long with hope and fear;

[ship,

Suddenly the Lord descending,
In His temple shall appear;
Come and worship-Come and wor-
Worship Christ the new-born King.

Sinners wrung with true repentance,
Doom'd for guilt to endless pains;
Justice now revokes the sentence,
Grace is given to break your chains ;
Come and worship-Come and wor-
ship,

Worship Christ the new-born King.

HYMN 6.

As through this wilderness I stray,
Be Thou my Light, be Thou my way;
No foes, no evil, need I fear,

If Thou, my Lord, my God, art near.

When rising floods my soul o'erflow,
When sinks my strength in waves of woe,
Saviour, Thy timely aid impart,

And raise my head and cheer my heart.
Teach me where'er Thy steps I see,
Dauntless, untired, to follow Thee;
O let Thy hand support me still,
And lead me to Thy holy hill.

If rough and thorny be the way,
My strength proportion to my day;
Till toil and grief and pain shall cease,
Where all is calm and joy and peace.
