39. Christ's testimony concerning John the

Baptist.

AND the disciples of John shewed him of all L. 7. 18 these things. And John calling unto him two 19 of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, 20 they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in the same hour he cured 21 many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto 22 them, "Go your way, and tell John what things a Is. 35. 5. " ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, "the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor "the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, 23 "whosoever shall not be offended in me."

And when the messengers of John were de- 24 parted, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, "What went ye out into the "wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with "the wind? but what went ye out for to see? 25 "A man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, they "which are gorgeously apparelled, and live delicately, are in kings' courts. But what went 26 ye out for to see? A prophet? Yea, I say "unto you, and much more than a prophet. Mal. 3.1.“ For this is he, of whom it is written, "Behold, MTM. 11. THEN began he to upbraid the cities wherein most of his mighty works were done, because they repented not: "Woe unto thee, Chorazin! 21 "woe unto thee, Bethsaida! for if the mighty "works, which were done in you, had been done "in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented Jonah 3. 41. The woman with the alabaster box of oint

ment.

AND one of the Pharisees desired him that A. D. 31. he would eat with him. And he went into the 37 Pharisee's house, and sat down to meat. And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box 38 of ointment, and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to 2 wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the 39 ointment. Now when the Pharisee which had bidden him saw it, he spake within himself, saying, This man, if he were a prophet, would have known who and what manner of woman this is 40 that toucheth him: for she is a sinner. And Jesus answering said unto him, "Simon, I have "somewhat to say unto thee." And he saith, 41 Master, say on. "There was a certain creditor "which had two debtors: the one owed five 42" hundred pence, and the other fifty. And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them 43" will love him most?" Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, "Thou hast rightly 44" judged." And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, "Seest thou this woman? I "entered into thine house, thou gavest me no "water for my feet: but she hath washed my "feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs 45 "of her head. And he said unto her, "Thy sins are forgiven.” 48 And they that sat at meat with him began to 49 say within themselves, Who is this that forgiveth sins also? AND Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. And the twelve were with him, and L. 8. certain women, which had been healed of evil 1, 2 spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom went seven devils, and Joanna 3 the wife of Chuza Herod's steward, and Susanna, and many others, which ministered unto him of their substance.

And they went into an house. And the mul- M*. 3. titude cometh together again, so that they could 19, 20 not so much as eat bread. And when his friends 21 heard of it, they went out to lay hold on him: for they said, He is beside himself.

Then was brought unto him one possessed M". 12. with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed 22 him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. And all the people were 23 amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, 24 This fellow doth not cast out devils, but Beelzebub the prince of the devils. And Jesus 25 Rev.223. knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought
