2 Thy hand, how wide it spreads the sky!
How glorious to behold!

Tinged with a blue of heavenly dye,
And starr'd with sparkling gold.

3 Thy glories blaze all nature round,
And strike the wond'ring sight,
Through skies, and seas, and solid ground,
With terror and delight.

4 Infinite strength and equal skill
Shine through the world abroad,
Our souls with vast amazement fill,
And speak the builder God.

5 But the mild glories of thy grace
Our softer passions move;
Pity divine in Jesus' face,
We see, adore, and love.

WATTS.

BEFORE Jehovah's awful throne,

Ye nations bow with sacred joy ; Know that the Lord is God alone; He can create, and he destroy.

2 His sov'reign power, without our aid, Made us of clay, and form'd us men; And when like wand'ring sheep we stray'd, He brought us to his fold again.

3 We'll crowd thy gates with thankful songs, High as the heaven our voices raise,

And earth with her ten thousand tongues
Shall fill thy courts with sounding praise.
4 Wide as the world is thy command;
Vast as eternity thy love;

Firm as a rock thy truth shall stand,
When rolling years shall cease to move

[blocks in formation]

LORD, I would own thy tender care,
And all thy love to me;
The food I eat, the clothes I wear,
Are all bestow'd by thee.

2 'Tis thou preservest me from death
And danger every hour;

I cannot draw another breath

Unless thou give me power.

3 My health, and friends, and parents dear; To me by God are given;

I have not any blessing here

But what is sent from heaven.

4 Such goodness, Lord, and constant care, A child can ne'er repay;

But may it be my daily prayer
To love thee and obey.

HART

THIS, this is the God we adore,
Our faithful, unchangeable Friend,

Whose love is as great as his power,
And neither knows measure nor end:
2 'Tis Jesus the First and the Last,
Whose Spirit shall guide us safe home;
We'll praise him for all that is past,
And trust him for all that 's to confe.

WATTS.

GOD! our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home.

2 Under the shadow of thy throne
Still may we dwell secure;
Sufficient is thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

3 Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4 A thousand ages in thy sight
Are like an evening gone:

Short as the watch that ends the night
Before the rising sun.

5 The busy tribes of flesh and blood,
With all their cares and fears,
Are carried downward by the flood,
And lost in following years.

6 O God! our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,

Be thou our guide while life shall last,
And our eternal home.

THE SCRIPTURES.

RIPPON.

HOW precious is the book divine,
By inspiration given!

Bright as a lamp its doctrines shine,
To guide our souls to heaven.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts
In this dark vale of tears;
Life, light, and joy it still imparts,
And quells our rising fears.

3 This lamp through all the tedious night Of life shall guide our way;

Till we behold the clearer light
Of an eternal day.

BEHOLD the lofty sky

Declares its maker God;

WATTS.

And all his starry works on high
Proclaim his power abroad.

2 The darkness and the light
Still keep their course the same,

While night to day, and day to night. Divinely teach his name.

3 In every different land

Their general voice is known;
They show the wonders of his hand,
And orders of his throne.

4 But let us more rejoice,
That he reveals his word;
We are not left to nature's voice,
To bid us "know the Lord."
5 His statutes and commands
Are set before our eyes;
He puts his gospel in our hands,
Where our salvation lies

6 His laws are just and pure,
His truth without deceit ;
His promises for ever sure,
And his rewards are great.

STEELE

FATHER of mercies, in thy word
What endless glory shines!

For ever be thy name adored
For these celestial lines.

2 Here may the wretched sons of want Exhaustless riches find;

Riches above what earth can grant,
And lasting as the mind.
