THE design of this arrangement is two-fold: viz. first, to throw into a more convenient form the treasures of the Prayer Book, for the use of clergymen, on those frequent occasions when they are called upon to address the throne of grace, independently of the stated services of the sanctuary; and, secondly, to aid both ministers and private christians, in bringing into more general use the beautiful and inimitable prayers which the Church has provided. Rich as they are in Scriptural language, and endeared by a thousand sweet and hallowed associations, it can hardly fail to aid the devotion and strengthen the piety of any member of the Church, if he shall seek to be more thoroughly imbued with the spirit of these prayers; and if, in approaching the throne of grace, he shall cultivate the habit of clothing his thoughts, and giving utterance to his desires in these consecrated words. In making this arrangement, it was found necessary slightly to alter some few of the prayers designed for particular occasions, in order to admit of their being used with propriety in a general man

ner.

No single word, however, as found in the Prayer Book, has been left out. The parts that may be omitted are simply included in brackets, while the words proposed to be used instead thereof are printed in italics. The rest are introduced just as they are found in the Prayer Book. May the Great Head of the Church bless this humble effort to diffuse that spirit of deep and earnest piety which lives and breathes through all these hallowed forms.
