DEBTOR to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing,
Nor fear, with thy righteousness on, My person and off'rings to bring; The terrors of law and of God
With me can have nothing to do, My Saviour's obedience and blood Hide all my transgressions from view.
2 The work which his goodness began The arm of his strength will complete; His promise is yea and amen,
And never was forfeited yet; Things future, nor things that are now, Not all things below nor above, Can make him his purpose forego, Or sever my soul from his love.
3 My name from the palms of his hands Eternity will not erase; Imprest on his heart it remains În marks of indelible grace; Yea, I to the end shall endure As sure as the earnest is given; More happy, but not more secure, The glorified spirits in heaven!
1 OH what amazing words of grace Are in the gospel found! Suited to ev'ry sinner's case
Who knows the joyful sound.
2 Poor, sinful, thirsty, fainting souls Are freely welcome here; Salvation like a river rolls, Abundant, free, and clear.
3 Come then, with all your wants and wounds, Your ev'ry burden bring! Here love, unchanging love abounds, A deep celestial spring!
4 Whoever will (oh gracious words!) Shall of this stream partake;
Come, thirsty souls, and bless the Lord, And drink for Jesu's sake!
5 This spring with living water flows, And living joy imparts;
Come, thirsty souls, your wants disclose, And drink with thankful hearts.
6 Millions of sinners, vile as you,
Have here found life and peace; Come, thirsty souls, and prove it true, And drink, adore, and bless!
7 To Him who gives our souls to feel The drawings of his love,
Be constant praise, while here we dwell, And nobler songs above!
The Mercy of God. Psalm lxxxix. 1.
[Tune, Zion's Foundation.
THY mercy, my God, is the theme of my song, The joy of my heart, and the boast of my tongue; Thy free grace alone, from the first to the last, Has won my affections, and bound my soul fast.
2 Without thy sweet mercy I could not live here, Sin soon would reduce me to utter despair; But thro' thy sweet goodness my spirits revive, And he that first made me still keeps me alive. 3 Thy mercy is more than a match for my heart, Which wonders to feel its own hardness depart; Dissolv'd by thy goodness I fall to the ground, And weep to the praise of the mercy I've found. 4 The door of thy mercy stands open all day To the poor and the needy, who knock by the No sinner shall ever be empty sent back, [way; Who comes seeking mercy for Jesus's sake.
5 Thy mercy in Jesus exempts me from hell; Its glories I'll sing, and its wonders I'll tell; 'Twas Jesus my friend, when he hung on the Who open'd the channel of mercy for me. [tree, 6 Great Father of mercies, thy goodness I own, And the covenant love of thy crucified Son; All praise to the Spirit, whose whisper divine Seals mercy and pardon and righteousness mine,
The Power and Triumph of Faith. Dan. iii. 6.
SUPPORTED by the word, Tho' in himself a worm, The servant of the Lord
Can wondrous acts perform; Without dismay he boldly treads Where'er the path of duty leads. The haughty king in vain, With fury on his brow, Believers would constrain To golden gods to bow!
The furnace could not make them fear, Because they knew the Lord was near. As vain was the decree
Which charg'd them not to pray; Daniel still bow'd his knee
And worshipp'd thrice a day!
Trusting in God, he fear'd not men, Tho' threat'ned with the lions' den.
Secure they might refuse
Compliance with such laws; For what had they to lose
When God espous'd their cause ? He made the hungry lions crouch, Nor durst the fire his children touch!
The Lord is still the same,
A mighty shield and tow'r; And they who trust his name Are guarded by his pow'r;
He can the rage of lions tame,
And bear them harmless thro' the flame.
Yet we too often shrink When trials are in view,
Expecting we must sink,
And never can get through:
But, could we once believe indeed, From all these fears we should be freed.
THOU from whom all goodness flows, I lift my heart to thee;
In all my sorrows, conflicts, woes, Dear Lord, remember me!
2 When groaning on my burden'd heart My sins lie heavily,
My pardon speak, new peace impart, In love remember me!
3 Temptations sore obstruct my way, And ills I cannot flee;
O give me strength, Lord, as my day, For good remember me!
4 If on my face for thy dear name Shame and reproaches be,
All hail reproach, and welcome shame, If thou remember me!
5 The hour is near consign'd to death, I own thy just decree;
Dear Saviour, with my fleeting breath, I'll cry, Remember me!
