TO THE · CHURCH AND CONGREGATION, Who statedly worship THE ONLY WIŚE GOD OUR

Saviour, in the Meeting-House, corner of BennetStreet, in Middle-Street, Boston.

BRETHREN, THE Committee you have honoured, by entrusting to them the care of fele&ting and arranging the Hymns, &c. for a new Book, having, according to their best ability, performed the duty they were called to, beg leave to present the result of their labours unto you, encouraging hope that their arrangements will meet your approbation.

They consider it a fubje&t of painful regret, that they were not at liberty to insert those original Hymns contained in the former colle&tion ; they believe with you, that they are worthy a place in any selection ; but they have endeavoured to supply their place from sundry authors, who have spoken as well as they were able in the praise of our adorable Saviour.

We have omitted some Hymns, which we admire on many accounts, but think them not so well adapted to the celebrating the praises of the Redeemer, as some we bave inserted in their place. We have thought it not quite so consistent with that part of christian worship, sacred to the praise of the world's Saviour, to make ourselves the subject of our songs, by finging our own praises, or prayers. We have, in this selection, attended to the direction of our Saviour's Spirit by the apostle James, where he faith, Is any among you afflicted ? let him pray. Is any merry ? let him sing psalms.
