And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. 6 And the LORD called yet again, Samuel, And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and faid, Here am I, for thou didst call me. And they answered, Let the ark of the God of Ifrael be carried about unto Gath. They answered, Five golden emerods, & five golden mice, according to the number of the lords of the Philistines: for one plague all, and on your lords. was ont you 5 Wherefore ye shall make images of your emerods, and images of your mice that marre the land, and ye shall give glory unto the God off frael:peradventure he will lighten his hand from off you, and from off your gods, and from off your land. 7 Now therefore make two milch-kine, on which there hath come no yoke, and tie the kine to the cart, and bring their calves home from them: a new cart, and take theb.the 8 And take the ark of the LORD, and lay it upon the cart, and put the jewels of gold which ye return him for a trespasse-offering in a coffer by the side thereof, and send it away, that it may go. 9 And fee, if it goeth up by the way of lais 1 own coast to Beth-shemesh, then the hath done us this great evil: but if not, then we shal know that it is not his hand that simote us; it was a chance that happened to us. 10 And the men did so: and took two milch-kine, and tied them to the cart, and shut up their calves at home: 11 And they laid the ark of the LORDUPon the cart, and the coffer with the mice of gold, and the images of their emerods. 12 And the kine took the straight way to the way of Beth-shemesh, and went along the high-way, lowing as they went, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left; and the lords of the Philistines went after them unto the border of Beth-shemesh. 13 And they of Beth-shemesh were reaping their wheat-harvest in the valley: and they lifted up their eyes, and faw the ark, and rejoyced to feest. 14 And the cart came into the field of foshua a Beth-fhemite, and stood there, where there was a great ftone: and they clave the wood of the cart, & offered the kine a burntoffering unto the LORD. 15 And the Levites took down the ark of the LORD, and the coffer that was with it, wherein the jewels of gold were, and put them on the great ftone: and the men of Beth-themesh offered burnt-offerings, and sacrificed facrifices the same day unto the LORD. 16 And when the five lords of the Phili. stines had leen it, they returned to Ekron the Lame day. 17 And these are the golden emerods which the Philistines returned for a trefpaffe-offering unto the LORD; for Ashdod one for Gaza one, for Askelon one, for Gath one, for Ekron one. 18 And the golden mice, according to the number of all the cities of the Philistines, belonging to the five lords, both of fenced cities, Or, great and of countrey villages, even unto the great stone of Abel, whereon they fet down the ark of the LORD: which stone remaineth unto this day, in the field of Joshua the Beth-shemite. 116. 19 And he smote the men of Beth-fhemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had fmitten many of the people with a great flaughter. 20 And the men of Beth-fhemesh said, who is able to stand before this holy LORD God? and to whom shall he go up from us ? 21 And they fent messengers to the inhabitants, of Kirjath-jearim, saying, The Phili 2 And it came to passe while the ark abode in Kirjath-jearim, that the time was long: for it was twenty yeares: and all the house of Ifrael lamented after the LORD. 3 And Samuel spake unto all the house of Ifrael, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then * put away the Jofit. 24. strange gods, and * Ashtaroth from among 14. 23. you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, Judg. 2. and serve him onely: andhe will deliver you "Deut 6 13 out of the hand of the Philistines. 13. And Samuel judged the children of Ifrael in Mizpeh. 7 And when the Philistines heard that the children of Ifrael were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Ifrael, and when the children of Ifrael heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. 8 And the children of Ifrael said to Samuel, † Cease not to cry unto the LORDOur God & Heb.. for us, that he will fave us out of the hand of from the Philistines. 9 And Samuel took a fucking lambe, and offered it for a burnt-offering wholly unto the LORD; and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Ifrael, and the LORD I heard him. not filent from crying.
