W Hen * Jethro, the priest of Midian, Mofes father in law, heard of all that God had done for Mofes, and for Ifrael his people, and that the LORD had brought Ifrael out of Egypt: 2 Then Jethro, Moses father in law, took Zipporah Moses wife, after he had fent her back. 3 And her two fonnes, of which the * name of the one was #Gershom (for he faid, I have + That is, a ftranger, been an alien in a strange land) there. + That is, 4 And the name of the other was ‡ Eliezer my God is (for the God of my father, faid he was mine help, and delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh) an help. + Heb. peace. s And Jethro, Mofes father in law, came with his fonnes and his wife unto Mofes into the wilderneffe, where he encamped at the mount of God. 6 And he faid unto Mofes, I thy father in law Jethro am come unto thee, and thy wife, and her two fsonnes with her. 7¶ And Mofes went out to meet his father in law, and did obeisance, and kissed him: and they asked each other of their twelfare, and they came into the tent. 8 And Mofes told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh, and to the Egyptians for Ifraels fake, and all the tra+Heb-found vel that had † come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them. His counfelis accepted. they dealt proudly be was above them. د 12 And Jethro, Mofes father in law, took a buint-offering and facrifices for God: and Aaron came, and all the elders of Ifrael to eat bread with Mofes father in law before God. 13 And it came to paffe on the morrow, that Mofes fat to judge the people: and the people stood by Mofes, from the morning unto the evening. 14 And when Mofes father in law faw all that he did to the people, he faid, What is this thing that thou doeft to the people? Why fittest thou thy felf alone, and all the people stand by thee from mornig unto even? 1) And Mofes faid unto his father in law, Because the people come unto me to enquire of God. 16 When they have a matter, they come unto me, and I judge between Tone and an- + Heb. other, and I do make them know the statutes man of God and his laws. 17 And Mofes father in law faid unto him, The thing that thou doeft is not good. and his fellow. wilt fade. 18 † Thou wilt furely wear away, both + Heb. fathou, and this people that is with thee: for ding, thou this thing is too heavie for thec; thou art Deut, not able to perform it thy felf alone. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayeft bring the causes unto God: 20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do. 21 Moreover, thou shalt provide out of all the people, able men, fuch as fear God, men of truth, hating covetoufneffe; and place fuch over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tennes. 22 And let them judge the people at all feafons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every fmall matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thy felf, and they shall bear the burden with thee. 23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall alfo go to their place in peace. 24 So Moles hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had faid. 25 And Mofes chose able men out of all Ifrael, and made them heads over the people rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers af tennes. 26 And they judged the people at all feafons: People come to Sinai. 1 38. 2. I The people come to Sinai. 3 Gods message by Moses unto the people out of the mount. 8 The peoples ansiver returned a gain, 10 The people are prepared against the third day 12 The mountain must not be touched. 16 The fearfull preSence of God upon the mount. N the third moneth, when the children of Ifrael were going forth out of the land of Egypt, the fame day came they into the wilderneffe of Sinai. 2 For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the defert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wildernesse, and there Ifrael camped before the mount. 3 And * Mofes went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Ifrael; *Deut. 29, 4* Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagels wings, and brought you unto my felf. Deut.5.2. 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above * Deut. 10, all people: for all the earth is mine. 14. And Mofes returned the words of the 17. people unto the LORD. 9 And the LORD said unto Mofes Lo,I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may heare when I speak with thee, and beleeve thee for ever: And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD. 10 And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctific them to day & to morrow, and let them wash their clothes. 11 And be readie against the third day : for the third day the LORD will come down, in the fight of all the people, upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to your selves, that ye go not up into the mount, or • Heb. 12, touch the border of it: * whosoever toucheth the mount, shall be surely put to death. Gods presence on the mount. ther it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet foundeth long, they shall come & Or. up to the mount. 14 And Mofes went down from the mount unto the people, and fanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said unto the people, Be readie against the third day:come not at your wives. 16 And it came to paffe on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders, and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpetsexceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp, trembled. 17 And Mofes brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God, and they stood at the nether part of the mount. cornet. 18 And mount Sinai was altogether on * Deut. 4 a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke there of afcended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the trumpet founded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount:and the LORD called Mofes up to the top of the mount, and Mofes went up. 11. 21 And the LORD faid unto Mofes, Go Heb, n down, † charge the people, left they break teft. through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests also which come neare to the LORD, sanctifie themselves, left the LORD break forth upon them. 23 And Moses said unto the L'ORD, The people cannot come up to mount Sinai: for thou chargedst us, faying, Set bounds about the mount, and fanctifie it. 24 And the LORD faid unto him, Away, get thee down, and thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee, but let not the priests, and the people break through, to come up unto the LORD, left he break forth upon them. 25 So Mofes went down unto the people, and spake unto them. 12.
